Feeding in Crate and other Food Issues

If you want to feed a very young pup in the crate, do you try to get him/her to sit outside of the crate before putting the bowls inside? I'm just trying to figure out how to do this. I envision Annie eating upstairs in the kitchen like she usually does and then going downstairs to feed the pup. That way both can eat in private and I don't need to worry about any food fights.

Since Annie eats in the kitchen and with us, I don't know how we'll keep them apart when we eat. Maybe we'll put up some gates when we sit down. I can't ban her from the kitchen cause her bowls are in there. There's no other private place for her to eat if pup is downstairs.

DEPENDING ON HOW BIG THE CRATE IS, YOU CAN JUST KEEP THE DOOR OPEN AND PUT THE FOOD AND WATER BOWL IN THERE. PIP HAS NO PROBLEM WALKING RIGHT INTO THE CRATE TO GET TO ANY FOOD I MIGHT HAVE PUT IN THERE! ONCE THE FOOD IS EATEN, JUST BRING IT OUT, AND PUT THE BOWLS BACK :)
In a few days or week, will you try to make him sit before putting his bowls in the crate?
I don't generally put his meals in there on normal days- but when he has to be in his crate the bowl goes in, and he ALWAYS goes where the kibbles are  The cats eat in the kitchen, where he isn't allowed, and he eats in the dining room, so I don't have much problem with him getting at other food. I think when they're little, they're so flexible about things! You probably don't even NEED to put the kibble in the crate (although positive associations for the crate are good too!) just keep it in a seperate room from your other dog. When they're done eating, food bowl goes back up, so you don't have Annie trying to eat the richer puppy food.

One thing I've noticed with Pippin though, is that no matter how hungry he is, his attention span wanders, so he may be eating dinner one second, and then he may come look for a toy. I've been staying at the dining room table when he eats, to make sure he eats everything in one sitting, instead of wandering around too much. Once he shows no interest in the kibbles (sometime the bowl is totally empty, sometimes he's got a few left) the food bowl goes up. (and he goes outside )

good luck with your new munchkin! They're a handful

When does your puppy come home?
Stacy, we feed two fo the 4-foots at opposite ends of the kitchen/breakfast room. There is a section of the counter that visually separates the area and I think that helps. They are fed twice a day. When Bailey was a pup, we just stayed with them during meals - to keep them in "their" area. It didn't take long for them to understand.
Dixie eats in the hallway, and Bosley around the corner from her, in the kitchen. I stand guard because as you have seen, Bosley will go check out Dixie's meal, and she will share it with him!
