my question is this, what the heck can i do to fix this, or what can i do with them to help them fix the problem. (this is an actual question) additionally: am i wrong to take a lot of offense to the statement that this is somehow my fault? (this is more of an opinion question) (edit: i'm also not blaming my parents, they have two tiny dogs and i think jack just learned there that he was master of the pack) |

I don't think it is anyone's "fault"...meaning that nobody purposely did anything to make Jack act alpha towards your roomates.
Your roomates also need to adopt the "nothing in life is free" approach to Jack. Until he realizes that they "control" his life he won't change. You can't make him treat them differently through your actions...if anything punishing him may make him obey you, but he may hold it against them. I am sure others will have better suggestions...hope Jack gets better!! Amanda |
i go through the same thing with walter. when my siblings and i were all living at home 2 years ago walter would challenge them both daily. they would get furious with me, but i really do think you are right that there is nothing you can do. when you are there you can ensure that it wont happen, but when you are gone jack things hes is above them in the pack so he is going to act like it.
the only thing that ever worked for walter was for us to determine when he would get in one of his moods and offer him treats for doing good things like sitting and lying down. im nto sure if jack is erratic in his dominant behavior, but usually there is a trend that you can pick up on in if you observe very carefully. good luck.... ive been there(still am) so i know how you feel and how frustrating it can be when other people dont seem to want to help training your dog, but it seems to be the only way. |
He who has control of the food has supremacy - maybe you can get your roommates to hand feed Jack once a week? Make him obey commands between each handful of food. That would help establish their place in the pack.
Does Jack sit and stay? if you can identify the things that cause the growling/biting, have your roommates put Jack in a sit/stay before they do those things. For us, it's putting on sneakers. Bailey gets so excited when the sneakers come out (Walk! Walk!) that he will pull at our shoelaces and be a complete pest. We have him sit and stay so that we can get it done without having our fingers nipped. And don't take offense, OES are big dogs and a lot of people are afraid of them. I'm sure they're only getting defensive because they're uncomfortable with the biting. Good luck! |
Are these new roommates since coming back from vacation? If yes, I can understand why Jack feels higher in the pack - new members have to go to the bottom of the pack. Have to prove themselves to change their location in the pack.
If they are not new roommates, why are they afraid of Jack now, versus not being afraid of him before? I would think that everything would just fall back into place once everyone was reunited. Did Jack's attitude change towards them just because he wasn't around them for a week? I agree, your roommates need to show Jack that they are above him - hand feeding him, going up/down stairs before him, etc. Good luck, and keep us posted on the progress. Chris |
thanks guys, i tried telling them this, but they wouldn't listen to me, so i consulted the gurus, now they HAVE to listen to me. they had it in their heads that since he listens to me, i should be the only one to yell when he's bad....
thanks for the input y'alls |
Rather than yell at (correct) him, maybe have them take him for a walk, hand feed him (after they've eaten), etc.
Do they like Jack? |
I didn't realize you were living with multiple women. Very Three's Company. |
Now we shall only refer to Jack as Jack Tripper. |
LOL ButterStotch!
Sorry Ed. That was too funny. By the way have you tried having Chrissy & Janet correct Jack. Sometimes the dog will mind them and respect them more if they correct him and not you. |
