When You're New On A Forum

Hi Everyone,

Just joined another animal group and no I didn't desert you guys. This one deals with small creatures like Bunnies, Degu's, Guinea Pigs, Hedgehogs..ect..it's run by a well known rescue group. This was a bit of an eyeopener for me in terms of: what it feels like to join an established group and :how those with limited knowledge need to not be made to feel uncomfortable asking questions.

I admit that while I'm pet savy in regards to cats and dogs, I'm not as knowlegable when it comes to these other creatures. For example my last bunny lived a very long life (10 Years) with her little Guinea Pig friends. I had always heard it's dangerous to have a bunny spayed and as all my pets have had pals she lived with the GP's with no danger of pregnancy.

I was suprised when reading all the literature of the importance of altering both males and females. (I had heard a lot recently of the importance of neutering males but not of females. ) In fact, just last month I took my new bunny in for a checkup and my vet advised against it and yet this group highly avocates for it based on health reasons. (Much like female cats and dogs - less chance of ovarian cancer in later age).

So I asked the question..should I spay her? The responses were kind and informative and no one yelled at me for being silly, nor made me feel stupid for asking. In fact they led me to sites which showed the latest research has shown that yes it's recommended to spay a bunny. They also provided me with a very knowlegable vet whom specializes in bunny spaying.

They way they welcomed me and responded to my questions only helped me and of course will in turn help my bunny lead the best quality of life. Although they might still consider me silly for my lack of knowledge - being made to feel comfortable there I will only improve my understanding of these smaller creatures which will in turn benefit them. So in a nutshell I'd say we are a pretty good group as we do that with newcomers. Sometimes it's good to see things from all perspectives.

I had a male rabitt growing up, I never thought about neutering a rabitt!!!!
I've never spayed or neutered any of the rabbits I've had over the years either, but around here there is no vet qualified to do it either.
I've had a ton of rabbits in the past, and I've never heard of spaying them. Now, only 2-3 of them were pets (my dad used to raise them commercially), but I never thought about it. I guess if I had a male and a female both (always had females as pets), I probably would have thought about it. They have way too many babies. ;) We used to have over 200 babies a week. Aww...I miss adorable bunny babies. :)
Hi Again,

I guess in a way it's much like the old days when people thought all dogs should stay outside. It was only after research and books came out that people realized that dogs were pack animals and needed to be part of a family. Kinda out of sight out of mind mentality. Same with rabbits in hutches. (I'm quilty of that )

After becoming familiar with the new group and their love for bunnies and other small creatures I've learned a lot. I never knew that they promote the spaying and neutering of bunnies. That rabbits form a strong bond with a littermate and grooming, cuddling and sleeping together leds to a happier and longer living bunny. Heads together almost whispering to one another and bodies along side each other - they almost appear to look like giant hearts.

I thought I had done the right thing in the past with my previous bunny and now this one - got them a GP friend as I didn't realize you can spay a rabbit. I had known about neutering males but it didn't occur to me regarding the spaying even if there was no chance of pregnancy. Just like our sheepies - spaying prevents all sorts of mammary tumors which may occur later in life.

Anyhow just like this forum I'm glad no one berated me for doing the wrong thing and not being knowlegable. Instead they took the time to answer my questions, and made me feel welcome. In the end it will not only benefit me but those of Puff and Squeak as well. Anyhow it made me see things from a different point of view as to how we share things with new people, as I was on the other side on the fence in regards to that forum. The most important thing was how I was made to feel welcome and no question is silly.

LOL it means I will probably get another Bunny so Puff can have bonding with a buddy, and will get her spayed within the next week or so. That means Squeak needs a new buddy too at some point (same sex of course). Ohhh boy..soon to get two more furballs in the house I quess.

Petfinder has Rabbit Rescue organisatons, too, although I'm not sure if there is one local to your area.
You could maybe foster first, to make sure it is a good fit.
So glad to hear how much care you put into the little critters in your care.
Marianne I kind of know what your asking us.Im going through those feelings as well w/ Oliver.Where I know alot about horses,BUT my knowledge doesnt run as deep as the people who run the stable and people who board their horses there as well.Talking too them even the 15yr old kids sometimes I feel like WHOAA!!Im way out of touch here.Im not afraid too ask question, this very wise gentleman i took care of, in a nursing home named Mr.Mosely once told me "Theres never dumb questions,ONLY dumb answers."

Being on the net and joining differnt forums over the yrs I resent the clicks found on them.Like if I ask a question, maybe needing ideas,or requesting help and I get 0% answers, where if someone who is LOUDER and in a click always gets answers and talked too.I think that shows a lack of respect in people overall. After a while what ends up happening is 1.finally I get annoyed and drop out of that forum and few people follow,2.the click gets irritating too ALL and hopefully hey leave.Anyhow clicks are annoying in real life and even irritating on the net.

Maybe this is why I dont join many forums??? :bulb: :bulb: :bulb: :bulb:
Hi,

I swear from now on I'm not going to write post in the wee hours of the morning...LOL...um think I've said that before?

Yup, quite right I actually talked about 2 different things at one time..joining new forums and rabbit care. Thanks for replying you guys to my rambled post.

>>Repeats mantra...do not post in the wee hours.
