torn ACL?

my poor felix has been in the animal hospital since yesterday, when we hurt his rear left leg while playing and refused to walk. they're taking x-rays, and while he's sedated for the x-rays he'll be neutered.

the doc says it may be a torn ACL (ligament that holds the bits of your knees together), in which case he'll need orthopedic surgery to reconstruct one. has this ever happened to anyone's pet? what was the surgery & recovery like?

i'm so worried about my little man, and i couldn't sleep last night because i kept thinking of him all hurty, sad, and scared at the hospital. and his big brother is very depressed and agitated that felix isn't here. :(

oops, that should say "when HE hurt his leg" not "when WE hurt his leg." we would never hurt our sweetpea!
I hope everything goes well with Felix  Give Felix Drakes and my best wishes for a speedy recovery! Keep us posted 8)
thanks, intradan. is your drake the "admiral drake" from dogster? if so, he is adorable!

the vet was still waiting for a second set of x-ray film to develop when i called. we go to pick him up at 5, so everyone cross your fingers for good news.
I have worked for a vet and we did alot of these surgerys.most of the dogs do very well. it is a little harder for the big guys than the little ones but all in all if you follow the vets take home instructions on recovery he should do just fine.I know you must be miserable with out your friend the house must be so quiet both my dogs are sleeping at my feet as I am typing. My heart goes out to you and I wish Felix a very speedie and stress free recovery. :D
Baxter tore his ACL (cruciate ligament) about a year ago - he was 1 year old at the time. It happened when he and his cat were chasing each other through the house and Baxter missed a turn and slammed into the wall. Then he wouldn't put his rear leg to the floor.

After an series of x-rays, the doctor identified what was going on. She recommended that we try to keep Baxter quiet for 4 weeks to try to let the torn ligament heal on its own. If it didn't, he would have to have surgery to repair it. We were told at the time that the surgery was common, however, the doctor preferred to avoid surgery if possible. The doctor also prescribed some pain pills since it was obvious that he needed them.

So, off we went to attempt keep a young OES quiet for four weeks. This included keeping him on a 6' leash at all times when he wasn't in his crate so he could only walk, not run or hop - even in the house! No nice long walks to get rid of all that excess energy, no playing with the cats, no tormenting squirrels, NOTHING! While not the easiest thing (I'm not sure who needed the tranquilizers more by the end of that period - Baxter or me) we did make it through and his leg healed without needing surgery.
Once the doctor gave him clearance to resume his usual activities, we did slowly build him up to his regular 2-3 mile walks again.

Baxter and I hope the Felix has a speedy recovery and is on his paws having fun soon.
A few years ago, my OES was on his way to tearing his ACL as he would always limp after we played long & hard with the soccer ball. He did get better after about a week or so of not playing. I found that instead of giving him short runs with the ball where he was making quick turns, I had him run really long distances where he wasn't turning as much. I never had that problem again after that.

I know this doesn't really help you if he already tore it, but maybe this advice will help after he gets better.

Speedy recovery to Felix!
Just a quick " GET WELL FELIX , Hope you're feeling better real soon !"
thanks for the good wishes and the stories, everyone - it makes me feel a lot better. chester and i spent the day moping, and even liver treats did not cheer him up.

felix is home with us now. his neutering went fine. his x-rays looked great - perfect knees, perfect hips (yay!), no inflammation in any of the joints. the vet also did some range-of-motion tests while felix was asleep and his muscles were lax, and said that his knees felt fine and there was no indication that the ACL was totally ruptured. he's on some pain meds now, and if his knee is still out of whack after 10 days, we'll get a referral to an orthopedist b/c the ACL might be partially torn. hopefully, though, it's just a bad sprain. keep on keeping your fingers crossed.

hearing that that this has happened to some of your sheepie friends, and that they're fine now, makes this a lot less scary. thanks, everyone.
I am so glad to hear the good news about Felix! With a little TLC I am sure Felix will be fine. Yes my Drake is Admiral Drake on Dogster.com. 8)
Yea Felix I am so happy to hear he is home I will keep hoping all stays well wishing you the very best of luck Grizzys mom
