ah yes i saw that one... and I also have children and another dog. I would be more than happy to take in a senior as well. just to let everyone know. Thanks |
OESRNSE has three or four senior females in Florida right now. It's not Ohio, but if you were willing to travel part of the way perhaps someone could meet you? |
I think it's great that you're thinking of an older dog From what I've heard/read, I don't think Sheba would be a good match for you.
Have you checked with Grannie Annie with New England Old English Sheepdog Rescue? About 5 days ago she mentioned there were 3 dogs in Ohio. You might want to put in an application and inquire to see if there is one that might be a match for you and your family. Good luck to you and please tell us all about your new addition when you find him/her |
Guest - check out my camera for a look at two gorgeous OES seniors I'm fostering.

If you're interested, contact the above rescue agency or write back so we can get you some contact info! Good luck with your decision. |
I don't really want to travel out of the area but if someone were to set up a transport that would be fine. I havn't seen that many in ohio so this is why I ask. If you know of any rescues or of just anyone looking to rehome one in ohio the contact info would be grateful.
Thanks everyone |
I found a couple in ohio but are all pups. The owners want about $800 for them. Is that a lot do you think? I really wanted an older one though. Anyone heard of any others? |
Where in Ohio are you located? Anywhere close to Dayton or Cincinnati?? You can private message me if you'd like. |
Well ater checking around it seems that if you have children then you can;t have a dog. Not just an OES but any dog. It's too bad that I can't help a dog who really needs it. I guess if you want one you have to go through a breeder. I don't see any other way. All of the adoption applications I have looked at said if you have kids then you can;t adopt from us. Thanks anyway everyone. |
Many rescues will discourage people with very young children from adopting an OES because of their herding instinct and size. I don't believe you would automatically be disqualified from adopting one because you have children. Many forum members are doing quite well with their kids and OES (chime in here, all of you with kids ). Many of these have been adopted from these very same rescue organizations.
Please don't give up on the adoption route just yet. Fill out the paperwork and be honest. I'm sure there's the perfect dog out there needing a home that will be a welcome addition to your family. Don't be angry at the Rescue groups. Their goal is to match up the perfect dog to the perfect home on the first try, not to prevent you from adopting. I have e-mailed Grannie Annie and will let you know what I hear back from her. Hang in there! Nita |
I was pregnant when we rescued Pepsi from the local Shelter.
My daughter was 1 yrs old when we rescued Rags two months ago. She was on Petfinders. They have been nothing short of wonderful with both of my kids. You will find the right dog.... Don't give up!! I agree with what Nita said. Fill out the applications. |
I rescued my Murphy when our son was 5 years old. We have never had any problems what so ever. It has been two years and Murphy would turn himself inside out for Tanner.
Fill out the application, a good rescue organization will match the perfect dog with your family situation. And you children will have a friend for life!!!, they will grow up wanted a OES of their own. |

Thanks anyway everyone. I think one of the main concerns is not having Children it is the age of the children..Many of these Babies end up in rescue because some terrific breeder sold a puppy to someone that had very small children and didn't know any thing about the breed. That is why we are very careful about the age of the children..Can't make a Mistake in placeing a Rescue Baby .That is for the dog and the Family also.... Hope this explains a little where the resue org is coming from...SHeepie Hugs, Kaye Second Chance OES Rescue |

Have you been watching Petfinder? That's how we found our rescue at a high kill shelter. Not only look for Old English sheepdogs but also for Bearded Collie because sometimes they get mislabeled. Good luck. |
And also under "Sheepdog". |
I would like to share a bit of the thoughts that go through my mind when placing a dog.
I am the one that is trying to place the older dogs that are in FL. I have the pair, Mopsy and Prissy (ages 10 and 11), "Little Gretchen" (a stray guessed to be about 10) and Heather (age 6). (I don't literly have them in my house this time -- I usually do but it is currently up for sale and its hard to pack too many dogs into my SUV and head out with each showing) These dogs are are all in foster care -- a big thank you to all foster moms and dads everywhere. These foster parents are a godsend -- they give us all the informatin we ned to help place the dog -- they know the quirks of each dog and can kid test or stair test each dog. three fellow forum members, Emily (Mop Lover), Lisa, and Linda Allen are great foster parents. I wouldn't have found Emily or Lisa without this forum! None of these sheepiess were turned in because of children (the #1 reason OES are turned in to rescue)and Ingrid ( the Placement Director) and I would consider puttting any of them in a home with children. However, there are many other things we look at when we place a dog -- including but not limited to vet recomendations, the results of the home check, in the case of "Little Gretchen we are also looking for a home with few or no steps, some on that can let her out to potty during the day or a doggie door. The requirements vary for each dog. I have had many applicationf for Heather from all across the country one application sounds perfect but they lived in MI. Like most rescue groups, we do not deliver dogs. This potential home was willing to drive to FL to pick her up. Our concern was, what if -- just what if, it didn't work out. The adoption contract states the dog must be returned to the rescue -- no, you can't give the dog away or turn it in to a nearby shelter -- you must return it to the rescue... We did not want the possibility of one of our dogs being "stuck" in Michigan. So location is just another factor.... Develop a relationship with your favorite rescue group or groups (read into that join the goup and become an active volunteer), you can also put you name on the waiting list for an OES at your local shelter. Don't assume that every OES comes in to rescue will get put on a website or Petfinder. Many are placed quickly to those homes that have been on a waiting list. Remember, the "squeaky wheel gets the grease." Marie Ocala, FL |
I do believe a lot of rescues probably consider homes with small children but I do not think any of them do around this area. I understand there are circumstances for each dog and the rescues have most likely been through a lot. The dog I have now is a hrerding breed and we know what the herding breeds do. We have raised him with our kids and he knows not to hurt them. Although he is not an OES he is a herding breed. I thank everyone for instilling a little more belief into me that I might be able to get a dog. I did find a one who is in ohio that belongs to a lady whose dogs had pups. She only has one left and is supposed to send pics tonight. She says it still has the tail because some people want them with tails (her words not mine) It is just a pup and as I said we wanted an older dog but we will see if things work out. As I am not just going to jump into anything. Thanks for all the inspiring comments. |
Oh My Gosh! Let's hope I get lucky.. cross your fingers for me
I may have found one about an hour away. They actually have 2. Not through a rescue or breeder. Just family pets whom they need to rehome. I am so excited. I hope they pick me. I have e-mailed before I even finished reading the post. |
I am going to go meet him! Sometime this week. I am so excited. I found an older OES like I wanted and they didn't even want an adoption fee but since I asked she said $50 would be fine but they weren't even going to ask for a fee. I told her I would be more than happy to give her $50! I got pictures of him too. I just have to make sure hubby says it's okay and I will probably get him! Yaaay! |
I am so excited for you.... I hope everything works out |
By the way..
these people have 2 one is a girl that I am not getting. Just thought I would let you know in case anyone is interested. |
SO EXCITED FOR YOU. I hope it all works out and this is the PERFECT OES for you. |
They already gave him away even after they said I could come meet him... I am so depressed. |
Oh, geez, that really bites!!! |
What about the girl? Or are you pretty set on a male? |
Try contacting Geri at houserex@mich.com. She does rescue in MI. |
they said the girl would do better in a home with out other dogs and I have anther dog.
This is pretty upsetting for me. I really thought they were gonna llet me have him. |
Are these the dogs that you were referring to?

We have a 10 year old, male Old English Sheep dog named Dudley. He can no longer be cared for by his owner (our sister), who recently experienced a life-altering trauma. Dudley has received proper vet and grooming care. Since his birth, he has been the companion of our sister, a professional medical career woman who loves sheep dogs. Dudley has papers and is temporarily being boarded at a location south of Akron. We are looking for an immediate, permanent and loving home. If interested, please respond with email, snemeth@sbcglobal.net. Thank you, Sue & Steve |
I'm very sorry. Below is a list of OES rescues that might also be able to help Dudley find a new home. Start with the contact in Ohio... I rescued Bella with Madeline's help. She responds quickly to e-mails and I explained exactly what I was looking for. My step son is 14 and my nieces and nephews are 8 and 10 and Bella does great with them. Madeline and others in the rescue evalute the dogs and works to find the perfect match in personality and activity. Bella is two and I didn't want a puppy although i guess she is really a teenager. Bella is on the go when I want to go for a run and is just as happy laying around relaxing with me after a long day. I wouldn't just limit your search to Ohio since there are many people out there willing to help get the pupper to the right home. If you search for Rudy's Blog you can see the adventure he took to find his furever home. Please call or e-mail Madeline she will work with you and don't give up on the rescue route just because the application says they won't adopt to homes with kids. It is worth the e-mail or call to talk about your specific situation Best of luck and I love your plan on considering a senior |
I adopted Andie, a rescue OES from Nita McCreary, who runs the Midwestern OES Rescue in Greensburg, IN about an hour's drive west of Cincinnati. Nita shares a website with a Minnesota rescue at this site: http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/IN352.html Nita McCreary was so easy to work with and so caring for the animals that she rescues. I contacted Nita to adopt Andie - a petite OES who needed a home and a job. I adopted her, gave her a good home, then trained her to become a Therapy Dog. She is great with the hispital patients. From the Petfinder website, it looks as if Nita has several OES available. I would contact her. Hope this helps. Good luck. |
