| I don't think you have any reason to feel bad. Unless your posts weren't truthful. I was what's been referred to as a "lurker" for a year and a half because of similar reasons. (I hate that word, by the way, sounds so criminal) I guess I've read too much about nutty people that follow things on the internet to get info and then use it to steal identities, etc. So it's been a huge deal for me to join the forum. And I try to stretch, out of my box, with my comments.
I really admire those that don't worry about those issues. At some point you just have to jump in and live life and not worry about all that BS stuff. So welcome Jamie/Isabella. You're still the same great "post er" to me. |

| I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one. When I came here, I didn't like my name being posted over and over again ...esp. since I never gave anyone permission to use it on the forum. That's why we have usernames!!! People would get banned (permanently) at other places I go if they do this (with a bad intent). Most of it is because if someone wants to do a search on google for someone, many people do not want their "life on the net" to be found ...esp from people they are trying to escape. You can find out so much about someone by just entering their name and/or maybe something they often talk about (dogs, a car, etc). But, this is such an innocent, well-intended group of people ...that I slowly just accepted it. I still don't go posting my husband's name (it's not mr. j ) ...but have slowly become a lot more open to posting "keywords" I wouldn't before (another reason why I usually call my other dog ...the maltese... instead of using her real name ...i will come up too much on google using my real name and my dog's name).
I guess when you've had bad stalkers like me... you go as far as needed to try to move on but still enjoy the things you like. |

Who would do this? good golly, even a nosey neighbor. I was watching Regis & Kelly the other day (Friday) ...and the caller who had to answer their daily question (win a cruise/spin the wheel) was asked "What do you do on the internet" ...this old lady said, "look up stuff on my neighbors"

entering your email address for example will reveal some things too "IFFFF" you go to a lot of places on the internet and use that email address when you signed up for the forum/wherever. entering your username (if it's not super common) can have the same results. |

Hey on another note many years ago someone mentioned the interesting stuff you find if you type in your entire name on google and see what comes up. I found that facinating as there were over 6,000 (combination of both my names) entries and someone had the same name as me back in 1700's! I found people that possibly could be long lost relatives, long forgotten mentions in newspapers involving my family and all sorts of neat stuff. You guys should try that. I even found a _ village, clinic and school with my last name in a third world country and thought perhaps my ancestors were one of the founders. I wrote to this impoverished place and have been sending school supplies to them for the last 2 years. So sometimes good stuff comes out of it too. I'm now going to change my identity to a big hairy truck driver. Marianne |

Well, for some reason they were having trouble locating him so they googled him. Same thing, newsletter about him joining the staff here and that's where they delivered the summons! |

Well out of curiousity I typed in that name....whooo Hoooo All I can say is if someone tried to find me and typed in that name they're going to think..one of two things : most of what popped up were beautiful girls and ahem...cough...lets just say Bosley's mom I can relate to you.

This will be long post so I apologize in advance, but hopefully someone may benefit from it. Several years ago I made friends with someone at work. I am a computer tech, and so was he--apparently a much better one than I am. After several years a friendship we had a falling out. It was ugly and we both did unkind things to each other. A few weeks after the blow out, I turned on my computer at home and noticed some weird things happening. Icons being moved around, increased traffic hitting my firewall. I ignored them, and then a few days later someone actually took control of my computer. I had been infected with a Trojan. I cleaned the machine--reimaged it and after a few days the whole thing started again. I also started receiving tons of spam, except that in the subject line there would be something pertinent about me, or my family, or my kids, or my life. This went on for quite some time. I also started seeing an increase in traffic to my website. What I didn't realize at the time was that I had a site meter posted on that site that was open for anyone to view--so when I logged onto that site to update or write a new journal entry--there was my ip address--visible for anyone in the world to see. Eventually the spam messages became increasingly spooky, and then they began to point out things I was doing, or something I was wearing that day. It was then we realized that this kooky friend of mine had planted a camera in my apartment and was watching everything that I was doing. This went on for over a year. I finally left town. Up until that time I was very open about my presence on the web. It never occured to me to be careful. I had always kept an online journal and was very open. I also played around with the online dating thing. Even when the computer got hacked--It never occured to me that I could be in danger or at risk. I was annoyed, angry, and disgusted but not scared--not until the moment I realized that this person had been in my house without my knowledge, and had been watching me and my children, for who knows how long. Needless to say--I'm a lot more careful now, but probably not nearly as careful as I should be. Just food for thought. |
