I worked for a long time on training loose leash, then my dad got sick and I haven't been able to work with Mojo for two months. Any progress we had made went right down the drain. I took him for a walk the other day and he about ripped my arm off. He is so strong and gets soooo excited if he sees someone. I was using the "if you pull... then I stop" method. If he had taken care of his business and there were no people, kids or other distractions around, he was kind of getting it. But the second he saw somebody, it became tug-of-war. Now it seems like back to square one. It took over an hour to just go arouond the block! I am amazed at the instant transformation! We fit the leader there in the store and then walked around. He shook his head a few times and then walked on a loose leash like he was the best train boy there ever was (and the pet store is one of the places he would pull the worst)!! Does anyone else use the Gentle Leader? Do you use it all the time or have you used it as a training tool and then were able to switch to a regular collar? |

I havent used it, but I know of several people who have. I have thought about getting Panda one....but havent yet....let me know how your walk around the block goes with it on! |
I know Valerie uses them with Maggie and Chumley and she really likes them.
I haven't tried them. But perhaps I should. |
I bought one for Ben (because he was out of control on lead ) one walk around he block was all it took, before he had chunks of fur missing from his snout. He was walking (like a "mad man") and clawing at the straps...his dew claws took out some fluff....anyway.......I never used it again (he looked so sad, with the chunks missing) and never had a reason to put it on him again.
Ben learned his lesson, "If I do not behave, mom will put that thing on me again", he has never been wild since! He actually walks right beside me (without being told to! ) and has been extreamly well mannered! |
One pull and out to the store we went for a gentle leader. Annie has now walked with her Halti gentle leader for about 3 years. It is the BEST! On the occasional sore shoulder. I think you can train with it too. |
There the best All mine as youngsters have started off with the Halti. The boy I had years ago would pull me over on a normal collar & lead so that is how I got onto the haltis. Best and gentle things ever and wonderful control on them too Yes you can train them too with a gentle leader on |
I am a big proponent of the "be-a-tree" method to teach loose-leash walking, and still am. Bit it takes a lot of consistency, which is difficult to obtain for days in a row.
In one of my classes one of my students was a small woman with a HUGE 11 month old lab. She was being pulled all over, and I could hardly hold him myself when we did the "stop and not move". On the very last day of classes we finally tried a Halti on him. I had never used them before and felt they were a sign of failure. but I had to do something. Well...it had such a calming affect on him, and she was amazed at how he immediately was subdued. Yes, he was subdued, but he got used to it and it made the walks enjoyable. I really wish we had tried it earlier. As for my guys, yes, Bosley has the Gentle Leader and we got Dixie a different name...Avenue. It is a lot like the Halti. She comes runnning and wiggles in her "sit" while getting it on, as she knows what it means. Yes, she still tries to scratch it off, but I distract her and she is getting used to it. Bosley's had his for a while, and he is great with it. I still want to teach them to walk nice on a normal collar, but in the meantime it saves our arms. |
We just went for our first real walk with the Gentle Learder.
Mojo wasn't crazy about putting it on but, he gets so wound up when he knows he is going for a walk, it's hard to even get the leash on. He did so good with it, my arm doesn't hurt and we walked all over town!! When he saw a person and tried to keep pulling, I think it really confused him but, it didn't take but a second for him to settle. I think he will be used to it in no time. Hoping it leads to being able to just use a regular collar again. |
I used it on Frank for a while we he started going into his juvenile deliquency phase (not that he's out of it yet) but after about a month of using it his behavior changed on a leash. Although there are times he still acts like a knucklehead.
btw., I tried the stop when he pulled me Dog Listener technique. It usually works but repetition is key. |
I love gentle leader!
If nose rubbing is a concern, I've read that means that the neck portion is too loose. When you start out, it should be *very* tight. The nose piece should not be able to rotate (which causes rubbing). I have tried a couple times to switch back to a regular collar, but they immediately tug and pull and my vet prefers the GL because it does not injure the trachea. I still need to stop from time to time to remind them not to tug and I've found that a quick pace at the start reminds them I'm the boss and in charge. A slow amble at the start of the walk seems to make them feel rebellious. Still, with GL, they are very easy to control. I also insist on a sit when I put the leash on, at the door before going out, outside the door (so I can lock it), and before going into the park. I find that reminding them I'm boss is really important. I actually had two people compliment their leash behavior last week! I'm working on sit when people come up and want to pet them. . . I haven't used the Halti on Daisy as she is generally pretty good on leash and doesn't usually pull, but I have thought of it for the times when she does. Since I intend to take her through training to be a therapy dog though, I am determined to get through this. Today I even managed to get her to heel without holding the leash (the leash was on but she was dragging it, it gives me a little extra chance of catching her if necessary).
I did however use the Halti on 2 german shepherds. the first one was 1-1/2 yrs old when I first met him and weighed over 100# and like to pull. When I saw the halti I bought it immediately and it worked wonders. When I got his son at 6 wks old, I started him off with the Halti as I figured it would be easier just to start with it. When the son became agressive to others, I was able to control him with the Halti on and never had any problem walking him. |
I just bought the Halti for Rags on Tuesday. She was not happy, but I gave her lots of treats. We took a short walk and she didn't bother to try to take it off until we got home. As soon as the leash was off she was immediately pawing at it. I am sure she'll get used to it.
YAY!!! No more dogs ripping my arms out of the sockets when I arrive at the Dog Park |
Yay Elissa, Yay Rags. They are not sure of them at first because it is so different, but at least you are not choking them and trying to control them by the strangling around the neck all the time. I look at it like a halter on a horse, leading & stearing them by the nose Mine now walk on a soft collar and don't pull at all, but started them all on the Haltis till the pulling stopped I think they are the best the haltis/gentle leaders especially for large dogs. I even had a big male newfoundland years ago that weighed heaps more then me that I could easily walk and control on the halti, it was either that or buy a saddle and ride him lol |
I used the halti for my first oes, it worked great, and I think Halti has a softer nose peice? |
We have a professional trainer coming in once or twice a week and he showed us the Gentle Leader. We bought 3 of them on Tuesday and it's amazing how quickly the dog conforms to walking nicely. Except for Kaytee, my vision challenged sheepie... sigh... she still pulls despite it so I've got to ask him what we should do when he comes next week. Until this time we had used the "you pull, I stop method" which worked for 3 of them. We have Haltis too... I think one difference is there isn't much loose stuff hang down with the Gentle Leader. My ding-dong of a Schipperke got here foot tangled in it last week
As others here have mentioned, you must fit the collar properly and it must fit snug. Here is the mfr. address on how to properly fit it- http://www.premier.com/pages.cfm?id=18 I was shopping for these too and found the best price so far at Country Side Pet http://www.countrysidepet.com/prod.itml/icOid/962 but I usually buy in multiples. One thing the trainer said is when you first bring the collar out you lavish the dog with treats as you put it on them. Then use them as a destraction until the dog adjusts to it. As soon as the collar comes off, no treats and no attention for a bit. It's so they look at the collar as a signal of wonderful things to come... the walk, the treats, the one-on-one attention. |
This link below is the ones I have used, very soft piece for across the nose and does not ride up like some of them do towards the eyes. Fitting correctly is very important. There is also a backup strap that can be added if your dog tends to slip the halti while out walking.

My trainer recommended the Gentle Leader Easy Walk Harness for bigger dogs who pull - even my 8 year old son has been able to walk our crazy 6 month old OES with it. |
