is it really that hard to shave em????? Dexter is 6 month old and with warmer weather coming on - needing a hair cut...... Me, being the "always try to do it yourself first" type person and thinking "how hard can it be???" Am I totally up in the night??? Please let me know if you think this is something I can tackle??? thanks, T |

My only comparison for you is how hard could it be to shave my husband's head? It seems easy, but boy did he look bad after I was done! I think you could do it, but be prepared for an uneven looking dog for a while! (Or, you could be super talented and it could come out great!).
Best thing is, hair grows back! |
I tried it myself for the first time recently. The thread and a few photos are here. http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=64 ... sc&start=0
If I could do it, I'm sure you can, too! |
Take it from me.....its not that it is hard, just dont expect perfection.....That will take several years....and believe me, Im not there yet either....poor panda has a hack job every few months...and the best thing is ....she still loves me! |
Head and feet are the hardest.......and underside. So start now training your pup to let you play with his feet. clip nails, tickle toes, file off toe nailes, etc so when the big noisy vibrating clipper comes along he won't panic. Perhaps start by using the clipper on his bum.
Also train him to roll over even when the noisy vibrating machine approaches his manly faucet. Sure save trying to crawl under a sheepdog. |
YOU PEOPLE ARE SO FUNNY.
I LOVE READING ALL THESE REPLIES. THE STORIES AND PICTURES ARE GREAT. AS I SHAVE BROOKLYN (THIS IS ALSO MY FIRST OES) AND SHE LOOKS ALL KINDS OF SILLY.I WILL TELL HER ABOUT ALL THE OTHER SHEPPIES IN THE WORLD WITH BAD HAIR DAYS. (THANKS TO THEIR OWNERS).... THEN I WILL POST HER PICTURES AND HOPE IT WILL MAKE ANOTHER NEW SHEPPIE OWNER SMLIE BANDAA |
I plan on trying to clip Abby myself. We show sheep and I have gotten quite good at handling a clippers. We will Have to see if Abby behaves. I don't have a grooming table so I was gona try her on my sheep stand. |
It also depends on how thick the coat is. For example, Rebecca takes about an hour but she doesn't have a lot of undercoat. Frank took 3-4 hours his first time because his undercoat was like felt.
verve up |
Ok, My secret is the Sears 8 gal wet and dry shop vac. Start along the back at the top of the rump with the bare hose to set your base length. Vacuum the coat straight up and then snip at 3 inches or so with scissors. Proceed toward the head along the spine. Use the bare floor attachment (the wide 12 inch one, not the square 6 inch nozzle) to blend in along the sides. Switch between the plain hose and the floor attachment to rough cut and blend.
Remember to clean the scissors with a light wd-40 wipe if they get sticky from all the lanolin in the coat. |
Can you say... GIANT Flowbee? |
Twissel-
Do you have a pic of your sheepie haircutting concotion??? This sounds like such a great idea, esp. for those of us who want a puppy cut, rather then a complete buzz... like me. I'm such a visual person, a pic would really be helpful... pretty please? |

Lol. That's exactly what I was thinking. We were actually thinking of getting one for the purpose of cutting Clyde's hair. |
