I'm afraid to try to trim it because I can't really tell where fur and poop ends and skin begins, it's a pretty delicate area! If anyone has any ideas for loosening it up before I bath her that would be great. |

I basically use baby wipes, or the moist personal towelettes. Work pretty good when something needs to be cleaned up. I try to keep an eye on the area and clean at least once a week, if not more. Better to get it before you've got a huge mess. |
When Shanti was a puppy I had the same problem. I used cotton with water. |
Corn starch also helps me w/ Ben - sprinkle and then brush it out. |
i wipe my OES with a baby wipe every time she goes, |
I do the same as El Gato.....moist towels ...I used to bath that area but I started using moist towels and it`s much better.....for me and Pisco. |
all good suggestions, but it happened again this morning, a big hunk of poo got stuck in the fur around her bum, but it seems to get stuck in the fur that drapes over from the top, which I don't want to trim because it would look funny. She does her thing, and then feels it stuck and promptly sits on it and tries to wipe it off which just makes it worse, then she has to have a bum bath in the bathroom sink...lol I really don't want to trim that fur if I can avoid it....lol
Maybe if I powder her butt with a little baby powder it will stop it from getting so worked in? By the way, I posted a new pic of her in the pictures thread |
Yes... dingleberries are not fun!! When I bathe Pithy, I don't use conditioner on her entire body, but I do use it on her rear end!!! I glob it on... let it sit while I focus on cleaning other areas of her, or I give her attention.... then I take the shower and spray it with warm water while I massage the fur! It doesn't get all of it out, but it makes the picking less of a pain for the dog!!!!! If it is really bad... simply repeat!! It really does loosen up the poo and also leaves it smooth and silky in that area to detract from more poo accumulating (that may be a coincidence, but I have noticed it happens less often!!)

Oh, the joy of having an OES! This is a common occurance - if the hair around the bum isn't trimmed - the poop can get stuck (especially if there are loose stools) - and harden - then blocks any poops thereafter!
There is a good maintenance information on the NEOESR website (see link below) and if you are on the OES-List - this subject was brought up a month or so ago and one of the Listers gave explicit instructions on how to trim the behind! You could check the archives. http://www.neoesr.org/maintain.htm Let me know if you want me to try and find it in the archives of the OES List. |

I'm going to bathe her today, and I guess just soaking it and picking at it carefully is what I'll have to do, I don't want to hurt her by pulling too hard, but it's really stuck. It wasn't yesterday.... she normally doesn't have that problem, but today she does...lol....

If anyone has any ideas for loosening it up before I bath her that would be great. The best way, IMO, to remove poop from the hair around the anus is with a coarse (wide tooth) comb. You will need to "pick" at it with a comb until most of it is removed. Not a lota fun! After most of the mess is removed, try using a waterless shampoo (no water needed). After applying the shampoo, remove it with paper towels (better than a real towel as you can just throw them away). If the area needs drying, try using cornstarch (plain cooking variety) or baby powder (smells good) This should clean the area good UNLESS you have a really big mess.....than only regular shampoo and water will do. To avoid this problem, keep the hair on each side and below the anus trimmed very short . If necessary, trim a little above too. This should allow the poop to fall free and not get into the coat. Hope this helps! |
I agree on the Baby-wipe straight after pooping method. ....but for when we get home, a soft face cloth, warm water and hypo-allegenic soap works wonders..... |
I have a Pomeranian and boy did his poo get stuck and matted to his fur. I tried pulling it off to no avail, so I tried to research solutions. I read stuff for about an hour and most people said you just have to wash it off wet. So I filled up a bucket of warm water and stuck his butt in there. Luckily he loves bathes so he sat there as I worked on the matted poo with gloves. I was able to pull it away from the skin and cut the fur with the bigger pieces of matted poo off. Then I just used my gloves and doggy shampoo to wash the rest off. It took awhile because that area was swollen but we did it. Thank God thats over that was a nightmare. Now I will keep his bottom cut and shaved. |
I have a toy poodle and poop , got stuck on his fur and I tried pulling it out but it didnt work I usually wash it off but I can't today cuz he went to the vet yesterday and the vet said not to bathe him for a week so his flea prevention won't strip of does anyone know how to get poop out of fur without washing him or bathinf him without waterless shampoo he is very anoyed by the poop |
Just followed advice from another forum and it worked great. Conditioner and very warm water plus gentle scrubbing! |
Use a wide comb. Let to poo dry as long it's not to thick. If it is and use wet wipes. Then let it dry and just comb it out. What you should do is shave that part of the bum and not too much about the size of a 10 pence coin |
I trim Sprocket's rear end around where I have noticed any poo sticking. He has a bit of hair under his tail that grows and gets in the way so that comes off also-it doesn't show, I like to keep a longish bit to cover his "manly parts" as my mum used to called them.xx |
