Toy Destroyer

Help!

Harry loves to rip up toys. He has chewed holes in tennis balls and untied his rope toys and ripped them up. Last night we bought him a toy: a rope through a large hard rubber ball because he likes ropes and the ball thing. Well at first I thought he was playing nice then I realized he was chewing up the ball. So we took it away. He has even damaged his first Kong a little though that was minimal.

Mopsy liked to hold toys down with her paws like Harry and rip at them. But all I had to say was "play nice with that toy" and after an "aw do I have to?" look she wouldn't do it anymore. Harry just looks confused when I tell him to be gentle.

I have read before on this post where some Sheepies are destructive with toys but I was hoping he would outgrow this. I could send one of my kids to college for a year at the rate I am buying Sheepie toys.

Any suggestions on curbing this behaviour and encouraging "gentler" play? Please tell me there is hope for my wild man.

I'm no expert but I think you might have more luck finding tougher toys! Have you tried marrow bones? Maggie will chew apart her toys but she gnaws marrow bones for hours on end and they can last her weeks before she is able to crack one (I try to replace it before that happens).
I have the same problem. They're just so rough on all their toys, it's hard to find something that will last.

They destroyed yet another soccer ball last week (I think Beau punctured it :x ). The best thing for him is Nylabones. I even have to replace those about every six weeks. :x
Genevieve isn't as rough with them unless they're playing tug-of-war, which is one of their favorite games. 8)

So....I guess what I'm saying is I'm no help at all!! :?

If you come across something indestructible, I'd love to hear about it.

Val - when you say Marrowbone, do you mean the brand name or an actual bone from the butcher?
I mean soup bones from the butcher cut into 3 inch or so segments. If I can't get those, I get this kind from the local doggie boutique:

I thought they were supposed to tear up their toys? hehe Yeah, Yuki gets into her toys pretty fast too. If you go to Petsmart/Petco... they have toys designed for "tough chewers" ...it will say on the package. Basically just look for the biggest bone/ball ...it will be around that section. :)

I have one bone that Yuki has had FOREVER, and she cannnnnnnnnnot get into it, but she tries EVERY night. Found it at Petco! :)
Thanks, Val. I've been a little afraid of real natural bones -not sure why, though. :? They look pretty good! I'll stop by the grocers on the way home and see what I can find. The wigglebums will thank you!! :D

Jo - post a link to that toy. I'd like to see if I can find one! :D
We stopped buying any toy with fabric or rope on it. The last lambs wool toy we bought last laess than 5 minutes. Yet we have a small, soft rubber soccer ball that has been with for 9 years. All three of the dogs are gentle with it - even when they grab it from each other.
I agree about the raw bones...they love to chew on them and because they are not cooked they don't splinter.

Ziva goes through toys very quickly too, anything and everything gets destroyed.
I can't a link to the bone I'm talking about, but it's impossible to miss when you're at the store. 1) it'll be the biggest bone (in a package) and 2)it will say something along the line of for serious chewers/tough chewers

I think I remember Ron saying his dog uses a bone like that too a long time ago??

SheepieMommy, My dog also has one of these and loves when we play soccer with her.

The Almost Indestructible Ball

In the ball section at the pet store...they also have a few balls that are indestructible. Worth taking a look! :)
I just picked up Finnegan a Almost Indestructible Ball last night for some future soccer matches and he loves it.

He isn't really destructive to his toys yet but I figure he will eventually get that way. Another toy I found over the weekend was this cute octopus from tuffies toys: http://www.edogtoy.com/retail/index.php ... ucts_id=70

It is built like no other stuffed toy i have ever seen. This particular octopus has a squeaker in each leg which drives finnegan nuts. Once, he thinks he's found the normal single squeaker I squeak another leg. They make many different shapes and sizes, some tougher and some not so. Oh, they float too for all those water sheepies out there.
Chewie and Maggie the coonhound totally destroy toys too. The only ones that last are the real bones and kongs. 8O
Thanks for the toy link! :D I love these...Im ordering the octopus, and a couple
of the dinasaurs! 8)

This family of toys are the best I've come across in terms of non-destruction. We have a giant snake made by the same company and it has survived many tug of wars between Bear and Clyde, which is really saying a lot. They aren't as soft as the other stuffies which seems to bum Clyde out a bit but he loves to shake it!
i wil try with small toys wich make noise ven he bite him thats work for me
The octopus is so cute.
Mojo loves stuffies but they don't hold up. He doesn't tear them up on purpose any more. They just get ripped playing tug-o-war.
Might just have to order one.
yeah, no help here, really... Callie can destroy a kong in a day

The only toys that really survive are tennis balls b/c she doesn't seem that interested in just chewing on them. She only likes those for playing catch.

I'll definitely have to check out that site with the tough toys. We had pretty much given up on buying toys b/c they were all destroyed so quickly.
I gave up buying stuffies for the kids as one kid in particular can destroy a stuffie in under 5 minutes. About the only thing she can't seem to destroy is Nylabones (and I have to replace those every month or so) and the kong brand toys (and should you know where London and Johnnie have hidden the kongs, please PM London and let her know so she will quit bugging me for a new one).

I have been giving her empty 2 litter bottles to play with. However, ...

Apparently London and Johnnie believe in the underwear/sock fairy. You know after you play tug-of-war with a pair of underwearor a sock and rip it to shreds, mom (me) places it in a secret compartment (the trash) and the underwear/sock fairy happily provides a new pair out of the laundry basket for them to play with. :twitch:
Kelsey is very impressed with Harry 8)

Give him some cardboard egg cartons or boxes to rip up then you can pop them into the recycle bin when he is finished destroying them. Cheaper then continually replacing toys. :P

I gave up years ago with one particular girl  At 12 I don't think she will ever be any different. She picks on stuffies that Brie has taken a liking too, she is a bitch
Here is Finnegan talking about his Octopus.

Be careful of the squeekies in the toys if he destorys them. he can swallow the squeaky and you'll have big problems.

The marrow bones are great. They are in the supermarket meat section and they say on them "marrow bones". there are other bones too but be sure to get the ones packaged saying "marrow bones". I boil them for a while, then let cool and actually scoop out the fatty inside just because my puppy can't eat the fat. They don't splinter like other cooked bones and I doubt he will be able to destroy it.
Nice sheepie.

Nice stove.
Is that the large octopus or the medium? I want to get one for my baby!!! Great pix!
We give Angus marrow bones and I boil them for a bit. When they cool I let him have them and boy does he love it. They last for a long time, don't splinter and I sometimes stuff banana into it which he also loves. A little bit of peanut butter rubbed around the inside too gives him much pleasure.
Judi,

I'll bring a marrow bone along next Thurs for Harry to Try. My guys will chew on them for hours at a time; even after they have cleaned out all the marrow. Once a week I put about a teaspoon of peanut butter in them.
I tried nylabones but after they chew on them for a while and you try to pick one up it's so rough it's like picking up a branch of a rose bush.

Maggie is easy on her stuffies; but Barney I believe could untie the gordian(sp?) knot.
Is it normal to destroy toys like that ??? I'm having the same issue....this is a good thread.
I love the jackets; think maybe if we all ordered one we could get them half price?

That is the medium Octopus with Finnegan.
Harry is all grown up now!

I started this thread over a year ago when we first got Harry. I am happy to report that he will now mind us when we give him the "be nice" reminder. He seems to have a very good sense of which toys are for tugging, fetching and chewing. Once in a while though a reminder is in order.

But I wanted to share with all of you one of the toys that went onto toy heaven last August. It was a gift from one of his friends at his birthday party and it made it about three weeks before being mutilated by the toy destroyer. We took this picture to share with his brothers who had left for college already.

My puppies liked playing with empty milk jugs (plastic). I'd take the lid off, clean it and toss it in the yard. They'd grab the handle or the mouth of the jug and run with it, or toss it in the air, then they'd all chase after it.

My older dogs also enjoyed them. Best thing - they were free and easy to replace. I never had any problems with them chewing off pieces. They'd eventually smash them. I destroyed them when it looked like they'd had enough chewin'.
I have a chewed on milk jug out in the dog yard too. It is a favorite with Maggie!

Here's a shot of it, although no one is playing with it at the moment. It always is in a different spot in the yard, so I know they use it. And it's free!

The milk jug is a great idea! I know at least with Cats they always prefer the toys that are free such as cardboard boxes or paper bags.
Dutch doesn't destroy her toys, she still has the teddy and soft dolly that I had for her when she came home and not a rip on them, what a difference from my GSD I was buying her toys ever other day untill I got a small bucket with a handle and Shadow would play for hours just carrying the thing around and throwing it in the air while talking to it all the time :D
