Finding Abby a Home

As many of you know, I have been fostering a rescued husky for 6 months now.
I had tried to find her a home simply by word of mouth, and through rescue people, but the husky rescue in our area is over run with dogs needing homes and has no money and not enough volunteers, so it has been pretty much up to me to do what I can.
This week I put an ad in the paper for Abby, and I am amazed at some of the calls.

I've had people say "I'm interested in the dog, I had a dog before but it got fleas so I had to get rid of it" 8O

Another caller "Is she a good guard dog?" Me: "No" Caller: " So she doesn't bark when people come to the door?" Me: "No" Caller: " Well that's useless" 8O

Another caller: "Do huskies shed?" Me: "Yes" Caller: "Anything I can do to stop that? Does she mind being shaved?" Me: "You need to find another breed" 8O

Do all the idiots have to come out of the woodwork and call me? LOL

I have had 3 other calls that were normal sounding people. LOL I've set up a few appointments to meet Abby later today when I get home from work. Do you think I should make them answer a skill testing question? LOL

Yeah, it can be very time consuming on cold calls for dogs to be adopted. I am sure that the Husky Rescue folks would put her picture and bio on their site for you. At least then you would get "husky" folks applying for her.
Maybe you can use their adoption questioniare to screen the folks? I could send you ours if you are interested in seeing it.
Also helps to have a profile done up that you can send people who might be interested. It would have all Abby's infornmation on it, so you don't have to repeat it over and over.
This must be so trying for you....but hang in there. The "right" people will come along.
The husky rescue people do have her info and pictures.... but no thing on the site yet.
Hi Stacy,

One thing I would stress you do without acception...DO A HOME CHECK! Tell the potential people you will do that and although it is time consuming - the sad fact is people look for bait dogs in the paper. This was brought up amongst dog people 2 years ago in our area. Of course they are very apt at telling those that list free dogs in the paper the right thing. Most willingly and unknowingly turn over their dogs to "the person whom has a wonderful farm". Even if you don't do the home check - just saying that you will may change their minds if they are not legit.

I sound like a worry wort don't I and I hope I'm not insulting your judgement in regards to finding the best home for Abby. I was horrified when I heard people (usually they get a female to call) that do this. I now call people in the paper that advertise free dogs and tell them about this. I am not sure if you are asking for $ for her or not but psych studies show most of the time if something was free you don't value it as much as something you paid for...in this case even a small amount.

Here's to hoping Abby finds the best possible home for her.

Marianne and the boys
Well, this is just another lesson how "stupid" people are....I know that you will find the perfect home for Abby....you just care too much not to....go with your gut instincts and Marianne is right...do a home check too!

Wow Stacey, I feel sorry that you have to deal with idiots like that.
There are so many of them out there. These people should not be allowed to have pets or reproduce.
Well, a dozen calls since I left this morning, and one of them sounds perfect. They have a 5 yr old husky that they rescued a year ago.
Anyway, they are coming to see her, with their dog to see if they get along, sometime tonight.
Hope it turns out well stacey, I have to agree with Marianne, even though these people sound great do if you can a home check as well before making a decision.

Yes I am absolutely amazed at what people can say when it comes to them wanting a dog, some people have no idea what so ever and should never be allowed to own any animal. You do have to laugh at some of the nutty phone calls 8O
Sounds promising. Good luck.
Yes, in regards to a home check, what I will do is if the people want her I will follow them home with Abby to make sure all is on the up and up.

Be very careful, there's a lot of nuts out there.
If they do like Abby and you DON'T like them you can always tell them that you have several families interested and you will be making a choice next week...or whatever...
Well I had a couple who liked Abby and I didn't like them, but of course told them there were people who had called first and I told them they could see her. Then there was a family who came to see her, and seemed to really like her a lot. They brough their husky Ty with them (who is gorgeous!) and the dogs got along fine, though Abby did snarl at him just a little and very quietly when he wouldn't stop poking his nose at her. LOL He got the hint and it was smooth sailing after that.
I really liked the people, and Abby seemed to like them too. The woman wanted to talk to her husband about it, and said she would call tomorrow to let us know. I won't be here tomorrow though, my husband will, so if they want Abby they will have to wait til Monday to pick her up I guess.
I really hope this works out. It is hard preparing ourselves for her to go, and then it doesn't happen and we have to go through it all over again.
I hope everything works out for you and Abby!
Fingers crossed for Abby to find the home that suits her the best.
I know you'll do the very best by her you possibly can....and then some. :D
This has to be so difficult for you, Stacey. Fostering her for six months, raising her puppies, placing them in homes - Wow!! Now finding her the perfect home, too. I hope this family works out for her and she gets a loving forever home.
