I hope to eventually drop meat altogether, but if it happens fine, but I am not working towards that right now. I LOVE vegetables and fruits, and whole-grains etc, so that is not hard for me. I also love fish, but the rest of the family doesn't, but we do eat a lot of chicken. My husband is a meat and potatoes guy, and he cooks the meals, so I need to kind of do this on the side. I'm just not sure about the whole protein thing. What do I need to take in to replace the meat? And do I now need to take vitamins? |

Some good recipe sources:
www.vegetariantimes.com www.vegsource.com Madhur Jaffery-several titles/ Indian cookbooks Deborah Madison-several titles The Moosewood Collective-several titles The Passionate Vegetarian by Crescent Dragonwagon (for real ) There are all sorts of meat substitutes, such as veggie dogs, various burgers, "steak" strips, etc. My favorites are the Boca italian sausage (great on veggie pizza and on a roll with sauteed peppers and onions) and the cheeseburgers. There are a few recommended supplements you should take, depending on whether you consume dairy products, etc. http://www.vegetarian-food.info/Non-Mea ... otein.html |
For the wholel protein, think legume and grain together......meaning in the same meal, the could be separate foods.
peanutbutter and whole wheat bread tofu and brown rice beans and tortilla red beans and rice soy powder in a fruit smoothie along with a whole wheat muffin Beans will add a significant amt of carbohydrates to your diet as you try for the protein, so be careful. Are you also cutting dairy? |
Thanks for the info.
I haven't thought of cutting dairy, and if I do it won;t be until I get a handle on this first change of diet. I do find that I am eating lots of cheese. |
Nicole, how are doing eating no red meat? Is it harder/easier than you thought it would be? |
It has been quite easy so far. I really don't miss it at all. Even hubby is on board, and brought home 5 different types of frozen pizza for those times he doesn't have time to cook for us. 4 of them had no meat.
Thanks for all the great info, folks. |
i would suggest trying morningstar farm products. they have everything from veggie burgers to riblets to meatballs to ground beef.
one of my favorites is to get the veggie ground beef and put it in spaghetti sauce. or to get the fake chicken and make tacos with it. there are so many meat subsitutes that are very good for you (usually made mostly of soy) that actually taste good too! good luck! |
Being in Orthodox lent I can agree about the Morningstar products and also Bocca. Seven weeks of no meat/fish/dairy can try one's patience. Thankfully the Morningstar products really help.
I looked at what I have been cooking for hubby these last few years. Red meat makes up only one meal a week. Boy was I surprised! So it really is easy to give it up. sheepieboss |
The veggie burgers taste even better grilled. Mmmmmm |
