diarrhea

Help. My nine year old OES has been having episodes of very loose stool with a lot of mucus. She has a bowl movement about 6 times a day even when there is no diarrhea . Anyone else experience this?

I have but Pisco is 10 months....
What my vet prescribed was: boil rice about a cup of rice in a lot of water (more than you would use to make rice) when it has boiled about 5 minutes, separate the water from the rice....cool down the water and give it to your dog...it works very good (doctors have even prescribe that to humans especilly kids)
Pisco`s problem does come because he lacks a digestive ensym..we are trying to control that but every once in a while it happens.
Is your dog eating his regular food or is there a change in his diet? that sometimes is the problem.
Please do keep us updated.
I would take a stool sample to your vet, especially if it's been a regular occurance.

I had a problem last summer with my 12 y.o. OES. No loss of appetite or any other evidence of problems except for loose mucus stool. It turned out he had some type of parasite worm that you can't see in the stool. I treated him for it and he was fine in about a week. My dog was not around other dogs but the vet thinks that he may have picked up by sniffing around. He was also always on heartworm preventitive so that didn't help with this particular type either.
Abbi had food intolerances. She cannot eat eggs or much milk without getting loose stools. Garlic, onions and oregano also cause her problems.

The mucus usually doesn't show up until the stomach has been cleaned out . I would have the stool check as suggested and maybe put him on a restricted diet. The rice water also works and is much gentler than immodium.
A vet could address other concerns such as the lack of enzymes. sometimes until the stomach is healed up, the loose stools become chronic. And you have to cut back on his feed and just give him rice and a bit of broth and maybe some meat until the stomach heals.
Take his temp and make sure he isn't sick before you decide to JUST home treat.
Here's a link to a pet tips site about taking a dogs temp. I use a digital thermometer so it cannot get sucked into the colon and I use KY gelley or oil for a lubricant.
