Others may give a different opinion but I wouldn't have him throw up something that big. It could get lodged in his throat and he could choke. I'd call your vet and see what he suggests-- I suspect a visit may be in order. |
Did he chew it up do you think or swallowed it whole? Frank at a wooden dowell a year ago and I was so worried but little pieces came out in his poo and he was fine. |
Definately call the vet, pronto, I personally would not make him vomit either for fear of it lodging too. |
he swallowed it hole. i called the vet they said to give him 3 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide. |
Wow what kind of toy did he eat?
I hope he's ok. |
it was smaller then my hand. she said 3 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide and he should vomit within 15 minutes.
MY CONCERN... She said to wake up every 4 hours and check on him for BLOAT?! This seems risky to me. Hendrix has done this before, but mind you I've never been around to see him eat something. |
My husband just ran out to get the hydrogen peroxide. I don't feel right about giving him these chemicals when I know he's vomited bigger stuff up before. I'm really conflicted. |
It is a decision only you can make, if you are concerned you could take him into the vet and let them handle it.
If you do give him the peroxide you need to make sure he does actually vomit because if it stays in his system it is toxic. It was likely a lot easier for that toy to go down than it will be come back up.... I hope it all works out ok. |
As for checking him for bloat, that is very important.... if detected quickly it can be treated, usually surgically. |
I honestly wouldnt make him throw up a toy that was that big. If its something edible or dissolvable I would but with whole toys that dont really conform to anything I honestly wouldnt. The chance of an obstruction is far too great. If they want to make him throw up then take him there and let them do it in case it does get stuck then they get to pay for surgery and what not and not you cause its their fault. And if you do decide to go ahead and do it yourself watching for bloat is a bog issue although sheepies arent as deep chested as other dogs that are more prone to it but definitely watch for it cause he will need srugery if there is bloat. My advice, take him in and let them handle it. They can take xrays before they try to make him throw up at least.... good luck |
Hi,
Wow how ironic..just today I was in the library and read a book regarding toxins and poisons and what to do should your dog ever need to vomit. Hydrogin Peroxide was recommended. However, it also stated if the substance swallowed was poisonous that vomiting in some cases should be discouraged as it can cause more damage coming back up. I sympathize with your regarding Hendrix ..how scary! I'm not sure what I would have recommended but probably a visit to the vet to ease your mind. You didn't say what kind of toy it was..if it was soft and pliable I would have waited to see if it came out the other end. Panda often poops out bits of sponges..thankfully it's never been a whole one! Still whenever I've suspected him of stealing one I am in pure panic. If the toy was of a hard material then more concern than if it was a soft pliable one. Please keep us posted and hope all is okay! Marianne and the boys |
I am so worried for Hendrix. I hope everything turns out ok, and I am thinking about you today. |
First of all I Hope and Pray that none of your Husbands or Wives ever work in Maximun Security Prison.... Right after FLetcher was attached at the prison { gang hit } he was home from the hospital. It was July and hot.I have a pet door i the laundry room where the Babies can go in and out when they want to... My Heart Grandpa Barney woke me up about 3:00 in the morning.....I could write a book on the number of lifes this boy has saved. Anyway he was telling something was wrong and I needed to get up NOW.... I got up and went out side and 2 gates were wide open and 3 of the Babies were gone.. The gates had latches on them so they had to have open by an up right...... About this time one girl that was pregnant was at the front gate foaming at the mouth......I ran in the house and grabbed the phone and called my vet....He said give her hydrogen P about 4 cc's Called a neighbor and got her to watch her while I went looking for the other 2... Found Kemo Sabe { Daddy } in the middle of the road and another one in the bar ditch all foaming at the mouthe. Another neighbor got up and helped me get them back to the house...... We got them all to vomit and vomit and vomit.......THe Vet came out to check...They threw up raw meat....... Someone had thrown or given them poisioned meat.......... The Maomma lost her Babies but all 3 lived........ I got a phone call about 5:00 Am and he said " Just wanted you to know that we can get to you anytime we want to"....... Part of the gang family that did the hit on my husband making their point....... New fence , new locks, no Babies out at all at night when I can't watch them........ Anyway the stuff does work...But, you sure need to have a Vet involved.........My Vet stayed with them for 4 hours to make sure they were OK....... ALways talk to your Vet before you do anything........Sheepie Hugs, Kaye |
How is Hendrix? |
So sorry everyone for taking so long to respond! After making my last post my husband got the hydrogen peroxide. We gave him 3 tablespoons and nothing happened. We then gave him 2 more tablespoons, he dry heaved and nothing.
We went to bed and I got up every 2 hours to check on him, still nothing. I wasn't feeling to well that night either so when I woke up on Wednesday I decided to stay home. I called our vet Wednesday morning to see if Hendrix needed to make a visit. Hendrix has eaten lots of things in the past and we never noticed until we found it puked up on the floor. Ever since then we've been crazy about keeping small stuff of the ground. The vet told me to bring him to make sure his stomach was ok and the chemicals which were in his stomach. Hendrix was his usual crazy self. The vet checked his ears, temperature and stomach. He said to feed him something bland for the day either rice or pasta. She said it will most likely come out in his stool and to check. She said the hydrogen peroxide needs to be repeated till a dog throws up, something the emergency vet did not tell us to do. She said with his size it shouldn't harm him. She said that the "2 A's" are crucial right now. By that she means "Attitude and Appetite" if those 2 things change, then we were to bring him in on Thursday for X-Rays. So, we went home and there I was, sick with a sore throat making my dog pasta! Hendrix didn't eat my cooking, he just hoped in bed with me and we slept all day. Around 3pm he jumped off the bed and threw up the toy! HOORAH! He's fine and eating just as usual. I learned a lot from this and I hope it helps you guys out with the situation. Now Hendrix is done with a lot of his toys. Thanks everyone for sharing your input and concern! |
Hooray!! My concern was definitely growing while we waited for an update. I am so glad for the good news. Hope you feel better soon. |
I am so happy to hear Hendrix is ok. |
Whew!!
So glad he's okay!! |
Wow! Seeing as he swallowed it on Tuesday evening, and he brought it up almost 24 hours later, Wednesday afternoon, I suspect it was lodged somewhere, or stuck in his stomach and couldn't pass any further.
That is one time you would be glad to have your dog throw up in your bed! BTW, why do they always want to do that? |
I am glad that Hendrix's story had a happy ending
It can be so nerve-racking when they are sick...not knowing exactly how they feel and how to handle it...it is such a feeling of relief when they get better. Amanda |
Ok, here it is, I'm gonna do it....
I'm cheering for puking! Yay Hendrix! Yay Puking! |
That thing with the hydrogen peroxide is the complete opposite of what I had heard. I was always under the impression that if they didn't vomit after the initial dosage you shouldn't redose because it could become toxic. I wonder if there is a weight to dosage chart or if it doesn't matter about weight?
Hmmm, I smell some research. Good thing about Hendrix!! WooHoo!!!!! |
Phew! How scary is that??? A 4" toy- that seems huge for a dog to swallow... what kind of toy was it? |
I'm so glad to hear he threw up the toy!
However, I'm not sure on what your vet said either, it is the opposite of what I've always been told too. I would keep a close eye on him since it would have been completely absorbed by now, and it can take time for symptoms to show if it was enough to be toxic to him. I've heard of dogs dying from being fed hydrogen peroxide that didn't come back up. I'm pretty sure that was a lot bigger of a dose, but still..... |
Yay Hendrix, Hugs for you too, my what a scary time. |
We're so happy he's safe - YAY!!!! What a tense time you had - I know you're glad its over!!! |
I don't have any experience, but this site suggests that the hydrogen peroxide is safe after it has been ingested:
http://www.doglistener.co.uk/medical/basic.shtml "The hydrogen peroxide, on ingestion, becomes oxygen and water and is harmless to your dog; it is one of the best antidotes for phosphorus, which is often used in rat poisons." ON the other hand, this site emphasizes that no more than 4 doses should be given: http://www.ohiodanerescue.com/care/firstaid.htm I have signed up for a pet first aid class given by the Red Cross next week so I will be sure to ask about this. The class was organized by the dog park people because we were all so upset about being unable to help the dog that choked a couple weeks ago. |
Wow, that's pretty crazy that he threw it up a couple of days later. Reminds me of the story I just saw on the news about the guy that had a nail stuck in his throat the last 30 years. It eventually moved down to his lungs and he was supposed to finally have surgery to remove it and one day he just coughed it up! |
Duh, Valerie!!! I took the pet first aid class at the National!!! I forgot already, guess that tells you how great the class was. I could always look this up in there!
If they want to charge you seperately for the book, I'll lend you mine. I'll just need to find it. |
Whew, so glad I'm reading this after the happy ending. |
I AM NEW TO THE FORUM AND JUST READ THIS POST ON HENDRIX.
I AM SO GLAD IT ALL OVER AND HE IS OK NOW. WE JUST WENT THROUGH THE SAME THING A FEW WEEKS AGO, BUT IT WAS A LONG NYLON DRESS SOCK. BROOKLYN WAS PLAYING WITH IT AND BEFORE I COULD GET IT FROM HER SHE SUCKED IT UP IN HER MOUTH AND IT WAS GONE !!! I WAS FLIPPING OUT, SHE LOOKED AT BE AND BURPED. I WAS TOLD ALL THE SAME THINGS FROM THE VET, BUT NOTHING WORKED. I WAS THEN TOLD TO WATCH HER POOP, AND GIVE HER SOME STOOL SOFTENERS (YUCK), BUT NO SOCK. 2 DAYS LATER I CALLED THE VET AND SAID I WANTED SOME X-RAYS.THEY TOLD ME TO BRING HER IN. WELL, TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT BROOKLYN GETS CAR SICK,GUESS WHAT HAPPENED 1/2 A MILE FROM THE VETS OFFICE? YOU GOT IT SHE THREW UP ALL OVER MY CAR AND THERE LAY THE BLACK KNEE HIGH NYLON SOCK. FOR THE FIRST TIME ,I WAS SO HAPPY THAT THIS DOG GETS CAR SICK. I GOT TO SAY THOUGH, I AM SHOCKED THAT IT STAYED IN HER STOMACH AND DID NOT PASS DOWN INTO HER INTESTINES AFTER 2 DAYS. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY? WELL, ANYWAY "THANK GOD" ALL IS FINE WITH YOUR HENDRIX AND MY BROOKLYN. BANDAA |
My dog just ate part of a wet kebab stick, but I think he chewed it up cause there was a little bit of chicken on it. Has this happened to anyone before, is it all ok?? |
Way to go Hendrix... How scary for you. Glad he's okay |

I would call your vet and ask if you should make him vomit; at this point the vet will probably ask you to come in. |

Our dog ate a wooden stick (probably about the size of a kebab stick but thicker) that was attached to a big gingerbread cookie. (He ate the cookie too!) I was worried and took him into the vet. They said they can't x-ray wood so you won't be able to see where it's going. Turned out our dog chewed it all up and it passed fine. You can give your dog some bread to help cushion the trip. Just keep on the lookout for blockage signs like straining when pooping and vomiting. |
My dog has swallowed socks, tennis balls and half of a Kong before. The Kong did not show up on the X-Rays at the Vet office. It took FOUR (4) months for my dog to throw it up! Right now he has one-half of a tennis ball in his stomach. He threw up a portion of it this morning; I induced vomitting with H. Peroxide and only got a foamy mess. I'm hoping the rest comes out soon. |
My cousin was getting married at her dad's house, everything was in order, setup and cleaned. They had a malamute named Bubba. As guests arrived and were led to the back of the house, I noticed something on the front step, thought it was funny that they delivered the paper in the late afternoon....it was a tube-sock that Bubba had eaten at some point and passed so that everyone could see! Bubba was known for his sock fetish. He would even eat pairs of socks that were balled-up together.
Unfortunately, Bubba died one day from bloat after eating something. Not sure if it was a sock, but it is good to remember that just because something passes once, doesn't necessarily mean that it will pass through again. |
My dog weighs 73 pounds a pitbull, she swallowed a scrunche for womans hair. I gae her 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide about 10 minutes after she swallowed it. She then threw it up within the next 5 minutes. She also threw up all the dog food and rawhide that she ate for the day so be prepared to clean up a big mess I would suggest that you use the bath-tub or take the dog outside. |

AUTHORITATIVE ANSWER wrote: Give three tablespoons of Hydrogen Peroxide. Wait ten minutes and repeat if necessary. Thanks. This saved my husky pup!!! She swallowed the squeaker from a toy. Mixed the Hydrogen Peroixide in a cup and administered with a syringe. Less than 5 minutes she puked it up with her meal. Thanks ever so much. |
My daughter's pitbull swollowed a small paint roller with a plastic insert. We gave her 1/8 cup of hydrogen peroxide and she vomited within 5 minutes. So do this outside and wait. She does have a wide mouth so I think that helped her not choke when the roller came up! |
