Animal Rights

It's obvious that we're all dog lovers, but how many of you consider yourselves to be animal lovers? Vegetarians? Animal rights activists?

I've been vegetarian for a little over 8 years, and an animal rights activist for about 5 years. I am absolutely 100% opposed to the meat industry in this country, and think that the way animals suffer and are killed is alarming and an indication of the corruption involved in industries that are clearly doing terrible things.

I think when it comes down to it, almost everyone would object to the conditions that slaughterhouses subject the animals to, yet legislation time and again turns its noses.

So what is it.... ignorance? do people really not care that animals suffer so that we can eat them? or is it the cash that the big dogs in the meat industry throw at legislatures?

I think its both.

Bet if one were to go to a slaughterhouse and watch they would have second thoughts on meat or poultry. I know there is a group here in Rochester going after a large food chain here that has a chicken farm. They broke in and took pictures. Have not seen anything about it yet .
just my thoughts, the big thing is money, money, money!
I don't consider myself an animal activist. I love dogs and animals (not ducks, sorry) but I don't necessarily agree with the existing groups, like PETA in the methods they employ to get their message across. Just like I don't agree with some of Green Peace's methods for the environment, or the ELF.

I think a lot of it stems from people's ignorance of the meat industry or turning a blind eye to it. I remember, though, in 8th grade in earth science they showed a video on meat production and much of the class turned vegetarian for a while after that. Some continued, some fell off the wagon. My point is that once people see it or hear about it they might change their minds, but it is a case of out of sight out of mind for many. Also, like pet store puppies, I think it is a matter of convenience. They figure, we like to eat meat, where else can we get our meat from if not from these mega corporations.

On a separate note...I was out at lunchtime and this woman was talking on her cell phone, just babbling on about everything, but she said something about wanting a puppy but it was too expensive, and that she went to a pet store that was very clean and while the puppies were expensive there, too, she was impressed by how clean and nice it was in the store and would go and buy her dog there. I nearly grabbed the phone from her to tell her about puppy mills, but that's just not in my personality to be that abrasive...
What timing.Awesome topic here,if you read under general topics youll learn I just adopted a mini horse. Also,I ahve helped closed down a filthy puppymill in Mn.Having that said my poor little horse is coming from a dealer,a person who buys up animals and will sell too anyone even slaughterhouses!! 8O
I had no clue at the time,I did know I did not like the conditions of the horses and their living area.Being cold, muddy, and wet this time of yr any animal NEEDS too be able too get dry at some point of the day.Well in this "farm"there was abut 40minis and about 1/2 were dominate so if you was shy like my little guy you stayed in the elements.Theres a barn that could hold maybe 10minis.I hate that he lives there.Im thankful I ahve found a wonderful stable for him. After alking too he lady where hes going I found out that this woman who is a dealer of minis will let the slaughterhouse come out and take how many they want.I was just shocked!!!When i went out and got my little guy like I said there was like 40minis,I went out there yesterday too meet the vet for my guy there was 10!!! All went too slaughter.I was taking my little guy into their barn too groom and spend time w/ him,and right in front of the door layed a baby goat dead and frozen. The guy picked it up and just tossed it out of the way.I was sick!!
I know we need meat and we use animals for food, clothing, and other,BUT the people who handle animals for these purposes CAN handle these animlas w/ respect still. It angers me when I hear someone say its just an animal!!No animal should ever be mishandled or handled like they can feel.
This is too touchy just thinking about my litle guy still out there.... :(
This should prove Heather's point. On the left click on kfc cruelty and the other one is meet your meat. If you want to know more about what's in dog food read Food Pets Die For by Ann Martin, it's a real eye opener.

I'm sorry, but I can not provide a link to a domestic terrorist organization.

They have condoned physical confrontation, they inspire criminal acts.

They've caused me many headaches on our site, and I won't support them.
I wont even think about eating at a KFC.It is disgusting 1st of all w/ all the bent bones from the legs 8O .

I have been too PETA's web site, and altho i do eat meat I dont wear clothes from anything that has a face.I dont need too wear leather or have a leather purse or leather furniture,or any kind of buck skin and especially NO furs!!Theres way too many other options for me.

Like I have theres the right way too raise animals for slaughter, and then theres the cruel and disgusting way.As humans we have eaten meat since we have been grounded, but never in history did our pilgrams beat, keep their farm animals in mudd, body waste, not fed them properly, and so on.In fact the animals wer treated very kindly, and respected.A living thing is giving their life for us too live, they should atleas be healthy, and free from abuse.
Ron,

I wasn't insinuating that I support what PETA does, I only thought someone may be interested. Sorry if I offended anyone, that was not my intention.
No cows are killed for their leather. It's a by-product of the food industry.
I wasn't offended! :D I just don't want to give them a link. ;)
I am an animal lover, and respect all life, however....

I have nothing against eating meat, though I usually don't only because I often don't like the taste of it. I whole heartedly approve of hunting for food, and using the hides or feathers as well. I also wear leather and suede.

I do not approve of mass farming of animals for food or hide purposes if it is done in an inhumane way. If they are well cared for during their life and killed humanely, I have no problem with it.

Just my opinion, but when abortion was legalized, I think it dininished the respect for "life". If people (some) have no respect for an unborn fetus, how can it be expected of them to have respect for that same fetus after its born? Whether it be man or beast. That's the differance between the pilgrims and modern society. Knowing they couldn't run to the corner market and replace their losses, they cherished life. It was important for their own survival.
Yes, I eat meat, I clean the animals/fish we get from the wild, I love animals, and have had a leather coat for 2 years (my first one). I don't think an animal should be killed for its fur, unless the main purpose behind its death was as a source of food.
Geez I wish I had more time to read posts........My Husband was in the meat business for over 30 years..I was a buyer for Tyson chicken for 4 years... I have seen things I WISH I HAD NEVER SEEN...... I know in My Mind that God didn't put cows on this earth to be house pets. But, I have ssen USDA Inspectors paid off to turn their backs in slaughter houses...The same inspectors that inspect Commercial Dog Breeders.... I have seen cows drug on to the kill floor of a slsughter house by a chain....I have seen cancer on a carcass and the meat go in the counter in the rocery store...That carcass had a USDA inspection stamp on it...... I am a Vegatarian by choice.......... Time is Money........ Nothing on the cow, chicken. sheep is wasted...Everything is used for something....... Everything that is not MEAT is called by products.... That goes into dog food.... The hooves go into making soap...... I Just Wish I Didn't Know SOme THings I Know....... Pump the animals full of growth steroids so they will grow faster......Does that affect those that eat meat? Japan won't accept any meat in that has growth hormones in it.....The cancer rate in Japen is very very low......Maybe its the rice?????? This Is Just My Opinion..... Kaye

If you want to find out the TRUTH about PETA, google PETA and sit down and have a read. PETA is a prime example of good intentioned people going wrong. The atrocities committed in the name of animal rights by those people are enough to make your skin crawl.

I would post the links but since they are easy enough to find I won't.

Animal Rights is a wonderful thing, terrorism is not.

PETA KILLS ANIMALS  AND PEOPLE
A movie that might change opinions about eating meat is Baraka released in the early 90's. Very eye opening movie. The treatment of chickens in that movie is unreal.

I try to practice a vegetarian lifestyle although I haven't given up fish.[/i]
Mouthy brings up abortion in a discussion of animal rights.Whats the views on people who go through IVF?I mean they create MANY fetuses and throw away the ones they cant use.Too me thats a HUGE violaion in Gods eye,BUT no one ever says these women who are infertal are "killing" life. Not just one life but MANY lives. But thats ok due too their circumsance?Just another thought too ponder.
IMO its very hypercritical.
Not sure why you are posting about In Vitro Fertilization in a thread about animal rights.

And who's god were you referring too? A Christian God, a Muslim God, A Hindu God?

I think I made my point, but I apologize if anyone was offended, but that was not "my" intent. My intent was to express my opinion of why I think man (some) treats animals, and humans with no respect.

As far as IVF goes, I think its a wonderful thing to give life to someone that can't conceive on their own, but I also think that there's a lot of children that could be adopted and given homes if this weren't available.

But, the main differance I see between the two is that abortion intentionally takes all possibility of that life, where in IVF they at least try to choose eggs they think will survive. To me, either way is playing God, no matter what God you do or don't serve.

I know a few ladies that did have abortions, myself not being one of them, but years later they are still dealing with the fact that they had an abortion. If a fetus is not a living being, why the mental anguish? I don't judge these ladies for what they did, but I do think its wrong, except maybe in some very complicated situations. But, even then I just don't think "I" could do it.

Back to meat, I love it, I hate the fact that animals have to die, but they should be treated with at least as much respect and dignity, if not more so, than some of those being sent to death for crimes they committed. And, since it is food for our table, one would think..........well, on it goes...
I'm not sure if there is a full moon or what it is that explains the plethora of contentious topics that seem to have popped up this week on the forum this week 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O But could we PLEASE NOT GET INTO A DISCUSSION ABOUT ABORTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know about the rest of you but I'm ready to go back to talking about how adorable Kayes puppies are
I agree with Ginny - Ron, you'd better lock this one up. With all that is going on in South Dakota this week, it's a bad, bad week for this.

Too bad, since the actual topic had nothing to do with abortion.
I apologize. No lock necessary.

I had it 2 years ago. My brother in law kept making fun of me and called it "a loaf."

I was a vegetarian for almost 15 years and I started eating a little poultry and fish about a year ago because I found that I was just not responsible enough about getting the proteins and other nutrients that I needed from a vegetarian diet. I know that it is very possible to do so but it just wasn't working for me. I was very thin, my hair was always falling out and I felt very weak-- and let's not even talk about the bruising! Even now though, I find that if I can have a vegetarian choice, I always pick it. I'm very particular about where any meat comes from now. I pick free range when it's available and I've done research on some of the major free range farms to really identify what that means to them because what one place considers free range is not what others do.

I have to admit, I carry a certain guilt about eating meat and, even after a year, I still don't feel good about it. I'm really not sure how long it'll last for me.
I've never had Tofurkey but Thanksgiving isn't big in our household anyway. I'm fortunate because there are a few awesome Vegan restaurants in the Philly. Giving a shout out to Govinda's on South Street which has the best Fake Chicken I've ever had! Plus in Philly flavor fashion, their fake Cheesesteak Rocks too!
One of my in laws is a vegetarian and one Christmas (this was before I was dating my husband) he brought a tofurkey. Every year since then it is always brought up (with the man not present!) and always laughed about. I wouldn't mind having tofurkey, but I don't think I'd be able to get away with it!

I mostly just eat all the veggie side dishes, although I do eat turkey...just more of a veggie girl anyway.

i visited philadelphia 3 years ago and we went to a place that had vegan cheesesteak... i dont remember what it was called but the food was fantastic!!

chicago has some really great places too, my favorite is soul veg on the south side. it is all vegan soul food and they have the best collared greens, bbq twists, and carob cake ive ever had. plus the entire staff is volunteers from an organization of African Hebrew Israelites... its very interesting!
I've been a vegetarian for about 2 yrs now. I dont wear anything that came from an animal either.
I haven't had tofurkey yet. May be this year I will give it a try.

Like Kaye said, with all the growth steroids they pump in to the animals so they grow faster I give it a thought as to what type of food Im eating.
I became a vegetarian because of they way animals are raised and killed for our plates.
Just like other countries that kills dogs for human consumption they way the dogs are raised and slaughter. is just not right for any animal to live and die in that way. JMO
