I do not have a dog right now, but would very much like to get an OES. Do any of you have dog allergies? If so, I would like to hear of your experiences. What do/can be done to reduce the affects? The best way for me to guage my allergic response to an OES is to visit with one for a short time. I live in Ottawa, Canada. If you live in that area and would like to volunteer your OES, I would be like to hear from you. |

Welcome to the forum
While it's true some breeds may cause less of an allergic reaction than others, there is no truly hypo allergenic breed. It is not the fur that people are allergic to, it is the dander. That said, oes do seem to bother most people with allergies less. They don't shed like other breeds, they do lose some hair now and then, often in the form of little tumbleweed furballs floating around or the occasional hair that breaks off. Your best bet is to visit some oes, and I know a few of our members live in your area Good luck |
Also depends on the dog. Maudie was the dander queen. These last five have been better. Regular bathing helps unless it dries the skin.
In rescue we had people give up sheepdogs due to allergies. Depends on the dog and your sensitivity.........and your willingness to set up regular grooming appointments. Letting someone else groom the dog may help you. |
Hi! Both my husband and I have allergies. Mine are more environmental so Annie goes to the groomer once a month. I have always been much better with longer hair dogs. You also need to be careful of their saliva. My hubby gets a red rash of Annie licks him. She's not a big kisser so that has worked out well for us.
I grew up with OES so I knew I'd be okay. We weren't sure how hubby would react so we visited with a few of them and he appearred to be fine. Remember, they are all different and you can be fine with one and not another. Also, there are allergy injections you can get for a while depending on how strongly you reacted. So, don't completely rule an OES out. Keep us posted! |
In general, I've heard that OES, poodles, and labradoodles and goldendoodles are better for people with allergies. I'm allergic to everything and I am pretty much fine with my OES. I don't know if partially it is because I've willed myself to be okay. But I also did allergy shots every week and had nasal surgery to help with the congestion, so I'm sure those helped as well... |
It is my understanding that it is the dog's saliva to which many people are allergic.
Good idea to test it out! |
