Chicago bound...

The grade 12 students at my son's school are going to Chicago around the end of May, and he is one of them. We live in the Toronto area, about 2 hours from Buffalo, and he hasn't been across the border since he was 2 years old.
They will be staying for 4 days, and I cannot believe the itinerary! Second City, Frank Lloyd's Home and Studio, several musems and the Art Institute, Navey Pier, the Magnificient Mile, the Gangster Tour, Andy's Jazz Club, Sear's Tower, Gino East Pizza...
I have no idea what any of these places are, but am wondering what it sounds like to any Chicago folks.

Chicago is one of the towns I'd love to visit......if only I had 10 years ago. There is so much to see and do! This itinerary is suited for a strong teenager. It would kill me.
WHAT A BLAST! Your son will have such a great time and they are taking him to all the hot spots in the city. Chicago is a great place to visit with so much to do. It can be very overwhelming. Here is a very brief snapshot of what these places are:

Second City is a famous comedy club

Frank Lloyd's Home and Studio - He was a very famous architect with homes in Chicago, Oak Park, IL and Arizona

several musems and the Art Institute- we have wonderful museums: Museum of Science and Industry, Historical Society, Field Museum, Holocaust Museum, Shedd Aquarium

Navy Pier - a pier on Lake Michigan, has restaurants, shops, IMAX theater, boat tours, huge ferris wheel, mini gol

the Magnificient Mile - This is Michigan ave with tons of upscale shops and restaurants

the Gangster Tour- I've never done this but always wanted to. It's a tour of Al Capone's hideouts and famous escapades.

Andy's Jazz Club - never been here either, but Chicago has great jazz bars/clubs

Sear's Tower - this is on Michigan Ave with shops & restaurants

Gino East Pizza - Great Chicago style pizza!

I'm from the suburbs of Chicago. The itinerary looks very busy, but they are hitting all the good and interesting "tourist" hot spots. It seems like maybe the are trying to exhaust the kids so they don't cause trouble at night?

He should have a lot of fun. The weather should start warming up by then, but make sure he checks the forecast before packing...it could be pretty cool...or warm...sunny or rainy.

Hope this helped.

Amanda
Forgot...not sure how'll that pack all this into 4 days. He needs a month!
i go to school about a block from the sears tower... tell your son if his class wants a tour of a boring law school to let me know!
The gangster tour sounds like fun. I'm going to look into this and maybe go. Capone's Hideaway restaurant is out here in Elgin/SouthElgin/Valley View. It used to be his "summer" place.
I want to go to Chicago! Because of all the goings on in my life my trip is on hold-again. Sounds like your son is going to have tons of fun!
At that time the King Tut exhibit would have started at the Field Museum. They should look into purchasing group tickets for that before they come.
In the past, the Gangster Tour looks like fun when I have seen the buses go by. Old school bus painted black crusing around the streets of Chicago, visiting all the old haunts.
I lived in downtown Chicago for 15 years and absolutely loved it. Your son and his classmates will have a great time! This is a lot to cover in 4 days but they're young and have a lot of energy! I'm going to add my comments to Annie's Mom's:

Second City is a famous comedy club. Many of the famous Saturday Night Live comedians started out here including Akroyd and Belushi. There are other Second City theaters out there now but the at Wells and North in Chicago is the original.

Frank Lloyd's Home and Studio - He was a very famous architect with homes in Chicago, Oak Park, IL and Arizona. His architectural style is called the Prairie School of design. The home and studio tour is in Oak Park, and there are a dozen FLW designed homes with a few blocks of the studio.

several musems and the Art Institute- we have wonderful museums: Museum of Science and Industry (real WWII German U Boat, underground Coal Mine) , Historical Society, Field Museum, Holocaust Museum, Shedd Aquarium

Navy Pier - a pier on Lake Michigan, has restaurants, shops, IMAX theater, boat tours, huge Ferris wheel, mini golf

the Magnificient Mile - This is Michigan ave with tons of upscale shops and restaurants

the Gangster Tour- I've never done this but always wanted to. It's a tour of Al Capone's hideouts and famous escapades. They'll definitely see the home on Clark St in Lincoln Park that was the scene of the famous Valentine's Day Massacre.

Andy's Jazz Club - never been here either, but Chicago has great jazz bars/clubs. Andy's is just north of the Loop. Great music!

Sear's Tower - The Sears Tower is on Adams St in the Loop, which is what we call the downtown business district in Chicago. It's right near the Chicago Board of Trade and Federal Reserve Bank, and a block from the Chicago River. Great observation floor with views of the Lake, Wrigley Field, Comiskey Park, Soldier Field... as long as it's a clear day! The second tallest building in Chicago is the Hancock Building on Michigan Ave.

Gino East Pizza - Great Chicago style pizza! Mmmmm... deep dish pizza!
WHAT?????

They don't have tickets to the OPRAH SHOW???? (my life long dream  )

Or it could snow. The weather here is mental.
Is he going to come and visit all the Chicago sheepies? We should have a tour for that!

He will have a wonderful time! Most of the places he's going are physically very close to each other.

Chicago in May can be fabulous...but then again...could snow!!! We say, "if you don't like Chicago weather...wait a minute!"

He'll have lots of stories for you upon his return. And boy...will he be tired!!!!

Tell him, Chicago is looking forward to welcoming him!

Deborah
Ohh, all of that sounds like fun!! We never went on any cool trips when I was in school. The only one they even offered was the Dixie National Rodeo in our state capital one Saturday a year, lol
Ginny, you need to get together with my twin....its her life long dream too...she has even gone so far as to write letters to her.....I told her if she ever gets on it and gets famous...I just want to ride on her coat tails....I just dont get it...Oprah???!!!
Ok...now that you are all praising Oprah, I have a public forum to vent! When she first started her in Chicago (the show was AM Chicago then) I was a stay at home mom. I LOVED :hearts: her completely! She was such a real person!

Her birthday is the end of January...a few days before mine. They had a huge birthday show for her. She was 34, and in a couple days, I was going to turn 35...so I really identified with her.

Fast forward.....I think it was last year. Oprah celebrated her 50th birthday. 50th birthday????? Why oh why, when she's a year younger than me is she turning 50 and I'M TURNING 55?? As you get richer and thinner...do you also get younger?

Anyhoo...knowing she is fibbing about her age has turned me against her. (And bruised my ego terribly!!)

    I've written her a letter too!!!! I KNOW I KNOW I NOW, OPRAH. I can't help it we all have our weakness'. My idol should be Ghandi or Madaleine Albright or MOther Theresa ANYBODY but Oprah but what can I say............ someday I want to go to the Oprah show, sit in the front row and have a "llight bulb" moment

When her bookclub first started I religiously read EVERY SINGLE book featured, I'd sit up all night to finish in order to make the deadline to write a letter, trying to get "accepted" for one of the book club shows. NEVER EVEN received an acknowledgement of my wonderfully crafted book reviews  Maybe cause I couldn't spell any better then than now

Oh well, we all have our dreams
She was born in 1954...don't know if that helps with anything?

REALLY? OH MY 8O 8O you've ripped the idol right from my heart , OPRAH LIE, tell me it ain'so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If Oprah can lie what truth can there be left in the world {DRAMATIC SIGH}
Ha ha...I suspect its her publisist that lies. And when she first came to Chicago, she was born 1951  (gulp)!

But I'll admit it, I, too would love to go to one of her shows!

Guilty pleasure, eh?
Id rather go on that show where the guy "sees" dead people...find out who is still around bugging me.... 8O
I'd like to go on What Not to Wear, although I have to admit it would be hard to give up my existing wardrobe...
oohh me too!!! I want to be taught that its okay not to match...I have a hard time with that.....I would NOT give up my shoes though.....
I know. I've always thought that I would hide stuff in my closet at home and just bring all the bad stuff. Maybe some old bridesmaid shoes or something. But I would think they would have someone come and check to see if you brought it all.
Yea but you guys probobly have closets full of great clothes. My closet is full of kakhi pants, oxford cloth shirts and sneakers (all I wear at work) :( I was always hoping my daughter would send a letter to the the "MY MOTHER IS SO WONDERFUL SHE NEEDS A MAKEOVER OPRAH SHOW" But guess what, I'm not that wonderful

Sorry for hijacking your thread Nicole

ME TOO! ME TOO! I'd be happy to give up my existing wardrobe for some personal advice from Stacey and Clinton.
Nicole,

Did your son go to Chicago? How did he like it?
Thanks for asking, Stacy!

I had to find his itinerary and pry some details from him (17 year old  )

He really enjoyed the trip. It was his first time out of Canada, so he was quite excited about it before and after. Besides all the tricks and teen stuff they did on the bus this is what they did:

They arrived at the Hampton Inn in Crestwood on Thursday around supper time. Went to The Second City ETC comedy show.

Friday they went to Frank Lloyd's Wright, and then the Museum of Science and Industry. In the afternoon they attended a Cubs game. Evening was dinner and jazz at Andy's Jazz Club, then a coach tour by an Untouchable Tour Gangster.

Saturday the King Tut exhibit and at noon they explored Millennium Park. In the afternoon the went to the Art Institute of Chigago, then supper at Gino's East Pizza. Evening was the Sear's Tower Skydeck, then drive home throughout the nite.

At some point in their free time he went shopping, and bought a very pink and green striped golf shirt and some pin-striped casual pants. Not quite his style, as he is a bit of a rcoker, but I was happy he went into a store and broke his mold

He mentioned that while his buddy was in a store shopping he took out his harmonica to play and put his gangster type hat on the sidewalk. Some people actually gave him some spare change, which he thought was kind of neat, and he gave it to some homeless guy on the corner.

He will be going to University in Thunder Bay in September, so we may drive him up on the American side of Lake Superior....His suggestion... :)
Wow Nicole! They sure packed a lot into that short trip! I'm glad they had fun, Chicago is a great city :D
Glad he had a good time! Sounds like he needed a vacation from his vacation when he returned! That's a ton of stuff to pack into such a short time.

I'd love to hear more about the Gangster tour. I've been wondering about that for years and don't know anyone who'd gone on it.
He said the tour was about an hour long, and was quite interesting. They toured different parts of the city where different well-known events happened.... where moonshine whiskey was made and learned about the resulting "industrial " accidents that happened.... There was some big shoot-out across the street from a church, and there are still bullet holes in the church...That kind of stuff.
Sounds like my kind of tour :D
