I got the scare of my life Wednesday.

As many of you know my son is a New York State tropper. Well yesterday afternoon on the news was a reporting that a tropper had been shot and died. They said he from from the Rochester area. (Jon was brought up near Rochester) my heart went into mouth, heart pounding like crazy.
Pure panic. Even the age is the same. No release of his name till the family is told.

By the way this happened during a bank robbery.

Call his home and no answer, left message. Called my daughter who live on the next street, no answer.

I was crying and praying.

Late that evening I kept tuning into a local news station and finally about 10 PM they gave his name.

Not my son.

Big sigh of relief, but had to say a prayer for the young man who died and his poor mom and family.

I need to call my son and find out why he died. All had on their bullet proof vests.
By the way I have been told they don't work and the government knows it too.

When I talk to him I am going to tell him he has to call me if something like this ever happens again ( I know he puts his life out there everyday) the odds we will go through this again is very high.

The 5 hours were like days.
Don't know how his wife can deal with this. ( hope he called her)

Ok enough of my crying, just glad to have him ok.

I'm so glad he is ok. I can't imagine how you were feeling.
Oh deana I would of felt the same, Frantic. So glad it did not turn out to be your son. You poor thing all those hours had passed till you could then find out that it was not him, I would of been a nut case by then. :(

(((Hugs)))
Deana, what a terrible thing to go through. I always wondered about the vests, what good would they do if you were shot in the head? Happy for you, sad for the poor young man and his family.
Soooooo glad it wasn't your son!!!!! This happened at a bank not far from me. Such a terrible thing. I was at my EMT class last night with several Deputy Sheriff's (who are instructor's) and it was a very emotional evening. When ever something like that happens it really "hits home" and makes you realize what a risky job all branches of law enforcement face every day. I think we tend to take for granted what they do.
I'm so glad he is ok, that must have been absolutely terrifying.
I'm so glad it wasn't him. Sad though.
Deana, how scary! I'm glad that it wasn't your son, but so sad for the family whose son it was.

This might be true, but better than nothing, don't you think? And yes, they only work (when they work) on the area that is covered, so if you are hit in the head, obviously wearing the vest won't do a thing.
So, happy he is okay! :D

I come from a family of officers, police & military (one brother is a bodyguard in the high government). It is a scary thing to live with! But in all honesty and I pray he will always be safe, if something happens to an officer, the family is contacted immeadiatly.....wife would have been called and I am sure she would have let you know asap.

With this said, our "bodyguard" is out of reach at the moment, common in his field but, it is scary to not be able to have instant contact! So, it is east for me to say, "no worries"........not so easy to do.

I pray that your son is always guarded by his angels and comes home safely to his family each and everyday! Next time you talk with him, please tell him, "THANK YOU!" from me and my family. "Thanks for protecting & serving!"
Oh Deana, I can imagine how your heart must have been torn...I worry about Brian all of the time..especially when he calls me all giddy about going on a "real" fire....I am so glad he is no longer a police officer, the fire dept. is bad enough....Hugs to you that he is okay!!!!!!!
Thank God he is okay, Deana!

But, ohhhh....so very sorry for the family of the young man who was killed. :(
Oh, Deanna, I am SO glad that it wasn't your son, but so sad for the family of the officer who was killed. I don't know how you kept your sanity, girl!

So how many years do you think this took off your life?

NYS Trooper, A Rochester Area Native, Killed In Line Of Duty

Last Update: 3/2/2006 10:48:01 AM
Mike Doria (Elmira, NY/Chili, NY) 03/02/06 -- New York State Police in Chemung County have arrested two men accused of killing Trooper Andrew Sperr.

Sperr, 33, graduated from Rochester's Aquinas Institute. He was a native of the town of Greece and a 10-year veteran with the State Police.

On Wednesday, Sperr was checking out a suspicious vehicle in Big Flats, when two men got out and started shooting at him. He fired back, injuring both of them.

Sperr was wearing his regulation vest when he was shot and killed. His sister-in-law, Mary Sperr, said the shots went underneath the vest.

Wayne Bennett, superintendent of the New York State Police, said the trooper probably didn't know the men were involved in a bank robbery earlier in that day. However, Bennett credits Sperr for preventing anyone else from getting hurt.

Bennett said, "Lord knows what else might have happened if they had been in other circumstances with the public. If they would shoot a trooper, the public is in extreme danger."

Anthony Horton, 33, of Elmira, and Brian Adams, 45, of Breesport, are both charged with murder. They are recovering from their gunshot wounds in the hospital.

State police said they are still investigating the robbery and the shooting. They believe others might have been involved in the robbery.

Police are looking for a 1997 green Ford Taurus with the license plate number DKF 4390.

Sperr worked out of Horseheads, NY. Anyone with any information should call New York State Police at (607) 739-8796.

Rochester-Area Native
The youngest of 11 children, Sperr was "AJ" to his friends and family. Some members of his family still live in the Rochester area.

He went through the state police academy after getting a two-year degree in criminal justice at Monroe Community College.

Mary Sperr, of Chili, said her brother-in-law always wanted to be a state trooper when he was growing up.

She said AJ was at the center of activity whenever the family got together.

Mary Sperr said, "He was great guy, they were very fortunate to have some like him on the force…We're going to miss him a lot. His nieces and nephews always congregated around him during the holidays."

Mary said he was a decorated and devoted officer and an avid outdoorsman. She said he loved to "serve and protect."

He went to New York City after the attacks on 9/11. Most recently, he traveled to New Orleans to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
How very tragic for the family and the force.

I lost an uncle under very similar circumstances.....so sad.
Such a tragic thing, makes you wonder WHY.
Wow Deana, I too would have been scared out of my mind.
I am very sorry for the officer involved. How awful!
Deana, I'm so glad you found out it wasn't your son!!! That doesn't make things better since either way... a life was lost, but I know it's got to be hard to be the mother of someone in that profession. I hope he listens to you and calls you in the future!!!

On a lighter note, I thought you had a run-in with a 7' Michael Jordan too when I read the subject title.
Sorry to hear about your scare.
So glad it wasn't your son. My stomach would have been in knots. We had a police officer killed here in the line of duty a few weeks ago. He had two children and a wife. They had one of the largest funerals ever and televised. Thousands attended. After that, someone donated a supply of a certain kind of gun that usually the officers had to purchase for themselves. Apparently it wasn't in the budget to have these guns even though most of the criminals they face have them.
I am glad that your son is fine and am sorry about the other persons family for their loss. Though I need to respond to the following qoute from article posted on here.

IMHO, I guess coming from a state where we are able to exercise our second amendment right, I have a lot of problems with the above statement by Bennett. I feel if the public was not disarmed by bad legistlation, the above situation would not get out of hand and these two may have been stopped sooner then in a routine traffic stop and prior to anyone innocent being shot. Like maybe at the bank during the robbery.

An armed society is a polite society!
I watched on the news friday the funeral of another Police Officer killed in the line of duty in a small town not far from here. Both of these incidents happened in adjoining counties with the bank robbery getting a little more press because it was a bit more dramatic and happened last. But in my two county area in one week two wonderful young men with families and wives and children and communities were killed protecting the public from gun wielding thugs.

Gun control is a subject which can be argued long and loud with both sides being equally passionate about their view. So I guess maybe this isn't the place to get into it. I am quite strongly anti gun but I am also not naive enough to believe that taking guns away is enough to stop violent crime.

All of our communities have been touched by the horrer of police officers killed in the line of duty but it seems that in my area, for a small town rural area miles away from the big city, we have had more than our share in the last year. These last two were two of 6 or 7 in the last year alone.

Which may be why over 2,000 policemen and women from around the state showed up for the funeral. I couldn't help myself from crying when I watched the news. I would imagine there will be as many or more for this most recent killing (I don't think I have heard when that funeral is).

I can't help but wonder what kind of world we live in where $1,900 is worth killing someone for. Then last night we turned on the TV and watched a movie, Bandits with Bruce Willis and Billie Jo Thornton where bank robbery was glamorized and the robbers got away.......... So while I believe in gun control I also believe that society as a whole is in big trouble and until we change the way we look at crime and violence, the acceptance and glorification of it by hollywood, we will continue to bury policemen and innocent people who are victims of violent crime.

Whew, well that's my soap box for the day.
