http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/dis ... id=5886826 His adoption fee is a little high, but he sure looks adorable!!! |
|
He's so cute, and just a baby. Only 4 months. I hope he finds a furever soon. I love his name. |
Did you all notice that he's back up for adoption! The adoption fell through. He's so adorable! |
Anyone driving from Georgia to Chicago? |
This thread about Buckie the Baby OES in GA is also running under rescuing a sheepdog...
I just got off the phone with the shelter (9 AM Thursday morning). Buckie is available. If you are interested apply for him via both phone and email. They will adopt out of area. They will not release him to a rescue group. They have many applicants to choose from already so if you are truly interested in adopting Buckie make your application sound really good if you really want him. Be thorough but not too chatty. They have alot to read. I also suggest supplying your vet ( include the phone number) as a reference and letting them know if you have OES experience (if you really do) and I am sure if you have a fenced yard and are at home most of the time it would be a plus. Also let them know if you are willing to take him to obedience training... Don't bother to try to bargain down the $500 price -- I talked to them about it -- the shelter needs the money for the other dogs and cats. He is still probably less expensive than amany puppy mill puppies... Consider the extra money a donation to the shelter. Marie Harrington Ocala, FL Still trying to find homes for Mopsy and Prissy (being fostered in Jacksonville by Emily and Ian of our forum) and Little Gretchen (in foster care in Clearwater) They are the FL senior ladies.... Remember any of these girls would not be naughty like a puppy.... |
Marie,
How sure are you this is a legitimate rescue? A $500 adoption fee raises all sorts of alarms and red flags for me. |
I'm glad you brought that up Ron--because I sent an email asking about if anyone had shown any interest in him because I wouldn't be able to get down there until the weekend this was the response back:
Mchsvolunteer@aol.com to me More options Mar 6 (3 days ago) yes that would be fine. Please call the shelter tomorrow and talk to jean or crystal. the number is 706-563-3647. Once you pay for him then we can hold him. It struck me odd, but since other people had shown interest in him, and it would have been a 6 hour drive for me I just dropped the whole thing. |
I never worked with them before -- this he quote below is off their website... I think they are legit. The girl that answered the phone this morning had to ask is they would release Buckie to a rescue group. They do work with rescue groups -- I'm sure that if he was a senior or a less highly adoptable dog that they would have given him to me.
"The Muscogee County Humane Society is a nonprofit organization located in Columbus, GA. We do not receive any funding from the city or state. We are a no-kill shelter so we are not an unlimited intake shelter. We have to find homes for our current residents before we can take more in. We currently house around 170 cats and kittens and 150 dogs and puppies. We disease test, vaccinate, deworm, spay, neuter & microchip all of our animals." |
Here is their website. It looks legit to me -- even their older mixes that I looked at have an adoption fee more than $100.

I didn't know if you were still interested in the Sheepdog. The first person who was interested fell through so he is back up for adoption. Please let me know soon. You are the next person in line for him. Marianne Ward PR & Event Coordinator Muscogee County Humane Society 7133 Sacerdote Lane Columbus, GA 31907 (706) 563-DOGSwww.muscogeehumane.org[/b] Hi All The gal at the shelter,Marianne, emailed me the note above... I was next in line for Buckie...Yikes 8O It was only an inquiry! Oh well... I told her Buckie is a real doll but I was personally full upsy! BUT I posed this question.... Would she be interested in just turning him over to an Old English Sheepdog Rescue If she would say YES then I would seek out help from an OES Rescue Group. Marianne has not responded back yet! I would gladly go to Columbus & check him out for anyone interested! Diane...the pix of Buckie is so cute Pssst Ron.. Can you please put these posts concerning this sheeper in Columbus, Georgia all under one topic? It is now under Dogs in Trouble & Rescue! It may be easier to follow... Thanks! |
I am very actively working for several legitimate OES rescues and I did call the Humane Society where Buckie is located at 9AM this morning and Ask if they would release him to rescue. I mentioned this in my previous post. I got the answer "No, Buckie will not be turned over to a rescue group." They have many applicants for him and are looking for the best home. However, they welcome our applicants to apply for him directly through the Humane Society.
I have many applicants that we have pre-approved as good homes but they have been waiting for a puppy (I don't often get puppies in) I have been contacting each of these applicants them to suggest that if they are interested in a puppy that they may apply for Buckie directly through the Humane Society. With this method we have found good experienced homes for many OES in shelters across the country that would not release the dog to a rescue group. Thanks Ron ****************************************** Hi Marie Glad you called the shelter...I just hated being so close to this fella & not being able to help him or anyone else! Glad they are being choosey & want a furever home that has experience with an OES! Be glad to help out Buckie if y'all need me! Diane |
Diane--I felt the same way--I would have gone down there to get him--if no one else showed an interest--but I don't really need another puppy (especially after comming home last night to a 3 inch hole chewed through the drywall in Barkley's room ) I'd rather hold out for an older rescue--one that has outgrown the chewing through the house stage |
One of the potential homes that I "sent" to the Humane Society just called me -- They said just got off the phone with the Humne Society they were told that Buckie has been adopted.

Thanks Marie for the news...
Phooey...it couldn't be one of your applicants that so wanted a puppy! Gee, I was really hoping that one of y'all wanted him & I could go to Columbus to have a little sheepie playtime & get to know Buckie That sounded very selfish didn't it...sorry Diane...so very happy for Buckie =) |
Just curious, does this shelter charge more for the more "desirable" dogs they get to help offset costs on "less desirable" ones? |
Yes, adoption fees often vary from dog to dog. like many other Humane Societies this one they has a senior dog program (dogs at a reduced rate for senior citizens) but if you read thre fine print not all dogs are in the program.
It is not just shelters that do this many rescue groups will have suggested adoption fes that vary from dog to dog. For example a healthy puppy may have a higher suggested adoption donation than a old blind deaf senior. Recently Judson ( a 1 year old healthy dog) was adopted (he is now Jethro and he had been fostered by a forum member) The adopting family gave a very generous donation to the rescue to help out our rescue group becuse they heard about the extra expenses we have for Mopsy and Prissy (also being fostered by a forum member) Isn't this forum great! You learn something new everyday. Marie Ocala, FL |
Thanks Marie, that makes perfect sense to me. In this boys case I wouldn't think a $500 adoption fee would be out of line, he had many people showing interest in getting him. I can't even imagine the costs involved per dog, depending on how long they stay at the shelter the food and vet bills could be huge. |
Do you remember Buckie, the cute pup that was in the shelter in Georgia yesterday?
One of the OESRNSE families that had been on a waiting list for a puppy adopted him yesteday. At first everthing was wonderful -- they adored him, renamed him Bailey, and their older oes, female, also just adored the pup. This morning we recieved an email, Buckie/ Bailey has parvo. When they walked into the dining room this morning there was blood everywhere on the floor. Bailey is going to the "bathroom", no stool..straight blood coming out. Now he is at the vets and they are not sure if he will make it. They said he would be there awhile till at least the beginning of the week. He has some sort of gasteral-intetestine problem and also some sort of kennel cough. Also an upper respitory condition, he has discharge from his nose and sneezes alot (treatable) Also hookworm. This could be the cause of the blood discharge. (treatable) He is in quarentine. This family was told that this pup was at the shelter for 5 weeks. The family paid the full $500 adoption fee at the Humane Society. they are working with the Humane Society to try to get their money back. The Humane Society has told them to let them know the cost after treatment is complete and maybe they can work with them. The Humane Society has also been in contact with the vet. The vet has prepared the new family that it could get expensive and that there is a chance he might not make it. They instructed the vet to do what was necessary. Bailey's new family will go back to the vet this afternoon to get the complete update. In the meantime they are washing everything. Prayers and white light are needed for Buckie/Bailey and his new family. OESRNSE will help fund Bailey's medical bills. Donations are gratefully accepted for Bailey and our other dogs in need. Marie Harrington Ocala, FL |
Oh no, that poor baby and family. Isn't that something that the Humane Society would/could test for? |
You would think so.
I don't have a copy of Buckie's ad as he is off Petfinder now and I didn't print it out. But here is an ad from another dog at that same shelter today.... Adoption fee is $175 and that includes spay surgery, vaccines, deworming, disease testing, microchip and microchip registration. Marie in Ocala, FL |
Oh MY....
I am just sick for that poor sheepie boy & his new family! Hmmm...if Buckie/Bailey had been with the shelter for 5 weeks ... you'd think they would have noticed he was sick! Parvo is BAD! I can't even type anymore... Diane...screaming between my sobs |
Information on Buckie.. taken from the Petfinder page Muscogee County Humane Society Columbus, GA (706) 563-4929 mchsvolunteer@aol.com Old English Sheepdog Size: Extra Large Age: Baby Sex: Male ID: 7B03 Notes: Buckie is a purebred Old English Sheepdog. His adoption is $500 which inclueds his neuter surgery, vacciantions (DA2PPV, Bordetella, & rabies), microchip and registration. revolution for fleas and ticks. For a dog this size to get everything done it would cost: Neuter surgery ($200) DA2PPV 5 in 1 combo ($60) Rabies vaccination ($15) Deworming ($20) Microchip and registration ($50) Flea/Tick treatment (revolution) ($20) and his daily needs while he stayed in our shelter. This pet is up to date with routine shots. This pet has been altered. |
So sad for both the pup and family.
Positive thoughts for them. |
This is just awful! The adopted parents must have been so scared. The shelter ought to be ashamed of themselves. |
I am so sad for Bucky. I am sending lots of white light to him and his family. How devastating |
That's outrageous! Poor Buckie/Bailey and his family.
I cannot believe the humane society didn't know he was sick if he was there five weeks. Oh dear...poor boy. |
It's hard to pass judgement on them from hundreds of miles away, but a $500 fee for a puppy adoption fee, is clearly trying to take advantage of having a puppy, rather than set a reasonable fee (how about $300 or even $350? Why so far overboard?)
I hate to say it, but it makes it SEEM that they were more interested in his money making abilities than his health. They just open themselves up for all sorts of questioning with that policy. I hope that's not the case. |
Ron wrote: I hate to say it, but it makes it SEEM that they were more interested in his money making abilities than his health.
I completely agree with Ron, as I had mentioned something earlier about the astronomical fees they were charging. |
That is too terrible. How devastating it must be for the family and for the poor boy . . . I hope he is able to make a turn around. |
How AWFUL 15 years ago I had the same senerio with a Dalmatian pup we bought. Had her 1 week and became deathly ill. It was parvo, she was only 8 weeks old. She made it though it. She was at the vet for 2 1/2 weeks. I pray Bucki has a good outcome like my Gabby did. My prayers are with them. |
This email just came in from Bucky now called Bailey's new Dad " Well here is the latest.....as of this afternoon.
Bailey is on IV. He definitely has hookworm, a gasteral intestine infection, and kennel cough. He is still discharging blood. His personality has improved since this morning. We are going back Saturday morning. Should you recv any financial contribution from this email, please apply them to the OES Rescue organization. We are in a position right now to take care of Bailey. We do appreciate the thought. I have washed everything, scrubbed the floors, and cleaned the toys. Hopefully that will prevent Maddy from getting anything. The Humane Society in Columbus has been very supportive. The director actually spoke with the vet and us. She feels bad about the situation and we will stay in touch with her. This whole thing has NOT made us wishing that we had not adopted Bucky/Bailey or regretting adopting a rescue OES. Its just like kids...you do what you got to do." Please keep up the prayers and the white light. I'll keep you all informed of Bailey's progress as I know more. Marie Ocala, FL |
Thank you for sharing the update.
I have been thinking about Bailey all day. Such a cutie. And so young to go through this. My heart goes out to them. |
Hi,
While I agree that it's unusual for a shelter to charge that amount of money for a pup I do understand their reasoning. Some time ago when I fostered for the Humane Society I had the opportunity to visit behind the scenes at our local shelter. The sickly animals that were quarantined or were injured in some way. After all the bills were paid, there was only 1,500 dollars left for the month to take care of the sickly ones - many needing surgery of some type. Who lives and who gets put down in many cases is dependent on how much $ is in the cofer. Most non profits have the daily challenge of trying to come up with funds to help the pets. The more $ the more animals get the help. Bucky's 500 dollar adoption may be what feeds or helps others survive. Yikes! Have you seen their website? Pages of dogs! Very sad. While the shelter did have a responsibility to make sure he was healthy and I feel very badly for those poor new parents. The sad fact of this is that the shelter may have had the best intentions at heart (non kill) and are overwhelmed with the amount of dogs/cats under their care..over 170! I'm praying Bucky/Bentley pulls through. My thoughts are with you guys! Marianne and the boys |
I haven't had a chance to read post about this.I responded when the thread was under Rescuing. I was very concerned then that this Humane Society be legit. I said then that not all Humane Societys belonged to the National group...Basically any one can hang their shingle out and say they are a Humane Society.Same goes for ASPCA...... All Humane Society's are supposed to non profit 501 c3.... We all wish we could make some extra MONEY..But, Someone had to have known that the Baby was sick. You can't have all those things wrong and it not be noticable.....Come On!!!!!! If in fact it is Parvo .That shelter should be quaranteed.. Parvo is a Virus... Not Bacterial....Antibotics won't help...... Sometimes you can get a false positive on a parvo test.Hopefully it isn't Parvo... I voluntereed at a Humane Society for years so I know how hard it is... How they struggle for donations and food to feed...They charged the same no matter what the breed.....They charged the same for spay and neuter..It is by the #... There are Humane Sosietys and there are Humane Societys....There are Rescues and there are Rescues..... This really upsets me ...I feel so bad for the Family that adopted this little boy..... It is too Bad when You have to do your homework and check out Humane Sociiety's, ASPCA's and Rescues......... But, You can't take anyones word on anything anymore......That is a sad fact in This World We Live In....... Sheepie Hugs, Kaye |

Ocala, FL There are truly wonderful people! Poor Bailey has been through so much at such a young age. I hope he survives and has a great life with his family. They all deserve that, and more. |
I agree with you Marianne... shelters are struggling. There is a lady I assist on occasion who tries to get a rescue out of a shelter as soon as possible. There is always a higher risk when several dogs are kept at one place. Shelters are not the ideal place for any dog or cat because you never know if one entering has recently been exposed to something contagious. I can't imagine trying to help 170 dogs/cats... there's just no way to be 100% healthy. And even vet checks can miss things... although one of mine had been vet checked prior to flight, she arrived with painful swollen glands in her neck, vomiting and listlessness. So things can be missed because of simply too many dogs to care for and too few people doing the caring or illnesses that may be just in the process of presenting themselves. Thankfully it sounds like the shelter will do the right thing.
I wish Bailey and his new family the best. It is an awful and upsetting thing to experience when the adoption of a new pup should have been a joyful occasion. But it sounds like he couldn't have found a more loving, devoted family. I hope he will be well again soon. |
I suppose I'd consider anuything that they ask for an adoption fee as a donation to help the other animals, especially the ones that they may have for awhile or ones that require other care. However, no matter what the price, in Bucky/Bailey's description it mentioned that the adoption fee included disease testing and that they had had him for 5 weeks. This poor little guy seems to be in seriously bad shape-- so much so that how in the world did he come out clean through the disease testing? It makes me wonder what they tested for. Parvo just seems common (and debilitating) enough that it would be one of the main ones to test for since it can be so deadly. Is hookworm something that would come up in normal bloodwork? |
When dogs are brought into a shelter they are quartined to check to see if they have diseases. They are very careful to use bleach.... Parvo can shut a shelter down. All of the shelters are over whelmed. Under stafted and over worked and under paid, if paid at all. Hopefully the parvo test they gave they Baby is a false positive...... The other problems can be treated much easier. Sometimes a Baby can pull thru Parvo. Sometimes it takes weeks at the Vet on IV's.....This is such a sad sad story.... Thoughts and Prayers for the Baby and the Furever Family..... Kaye |
Has anyone herd a update on this poor little guy? I hope no news is good news. I think about him and his family all the time. If anyone knows let me know please. |
I read on another board that he's home
and seems to be doing much better Yippee for Bailey and his new family! |
The prayers and white light must be working! I got this email yesterday afternoon and for some reson my computer wouldn't let me into oes.org to tell you all the good news from Bailey's dad...
"Bailey returned home about an hour ago. He seems so much better than before. He still is on antibiotics twice a day. He definitely seems over the hump . Tomorrow is his first day with the groomer. We can then get more of the shelter smell off of him. Please extend our thanks to everyone for their concern and thoughtfulness. It was greatly appreciated." Marie Ocala, FL |
Oh Thank Goodness! Yeah for Bailey!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Willoughby and I are very happy to hear that Bailey is feeling better. Poor litte guy. Best wishes and hugs. Lynda |
Hi All
Any news on Buckie/Bailey Diane...hoping he's feelin' better |
I have great news for you from Bailey's dad....
"Bailey is doing fine. His new favorite thing is it unroll the toilet paper. He definitely has gotten his "puppy" personalty back. Bailey and Madison (our 6 yr old OES) seem to have bonded. Maddy has helped Bailey, showing him the household rules. Bailey does get jealous when we pet Maddy. He also seems to get anxious when we leave. I think he is just nervous, thinking we won't come back. But its too late now.....he is stuck with us! Thank everyone for the support and thoughts during Bailey's illness." Marie in Ocala, FL |
Oh Marie
That is such great news Happy for the entire family. If Bailey aka Buckie is after the TP that's a good sign... He's actin' & feelin' like a sheepie pup should Thanks for the update Diane |
