Milele (Swahili for "eternity), a 70 lb. Alaskan Malamute was awarded the Courageous Canine Award by the local Animal Protective Assoc. She comes from a champion line and was headed for showing when at 6 months a tumor was discovered and she had to be spayed to minimize the risks of cancer. As a result instead of a career as a show dog she became a certified therapy dog. As such Milele brings affection to residents of various nursing homes and St. Joseph's Institute for the Deaf. As a "Safety Sam" dog, she teaches children how to safely approach canines to prevent dog bites. She loves kids -- they can hug and kiss her. At St. Joseph's kids were reading the book "Call of the Wild" about sled dogs, so in addition to a bite prevention class the owner brought in her training sled and the kids got to run around the gym with Milele. Milele is part of the Gateway Sled Dog Club and excels in weight-pulling competitions. Usually taking first or second place; her best pull to date has been 1,770 lbs. As a Courageous Canine Award sinner, she received a silver dog tag and an engraved picture frame. |
