Family dog

My sister called today and said that the family dog, Opal was hit by a UPS truck today. She loved chasing cars up and down the street, and she misjudged her own speed. My little sister is not taking it so well (she's only in 5th grade)

Opal was burried in the garden out in the back yard...

We'll miss you !!!

Oh that's terrible. I feel so badly for you and your sister and the whole extended family.

What kind of dog was Opal?
So Sorry for your loss. Hope you can comfort your sister.
I'm so sorry :( I hope your sister will be okay, it's a very difficult thing to go through.
I'm so sorry for your loss. :(
How very sad. Our dog really loves the UPS truck too. How sad to know that Opal died from doing something that she loved doing.
I'm so sorry about the loss
of your beloved Opal.
Hugs to you and your sister
during this very sad time.
I'm so sorry for your loss. :(
so sorry for your loss
Poor Opal :( , I am so sorry. Death of a beloved pet is hard at any age but especially when you are young, give your sister a hug and a sheepie kiss from the boys.

Ya know, it's sad enough when we have an opportunity to save a life and we choose not to and then ask for sympathy. But, it's pathetic when so many of us work so hard to protect our pets and idiots let them run loose chasin vehicles or face many of the others dangers that lurk out there and then ask for compassion when they are killed.

I'm sorry, I don't have any for careless individuels who allow the pets to be killed by dangers that they can't possible understand. I feel a real sense of sympathy for the pets that have been stuck with these families.

Zach, My mother always told me if you can't say something nice don't say anything.
Well I don't know your mom and it's sad ya'll promote this like it's ok to let your pets run wild and allow pets get killed. It's not ok and I won't pretend it is.
I'm reading down the responses to this thread thinking "why isn't anyone saying a thing about keeping their beloved pets contained"? If the dog was a known car-chaser, why are people surprised that one day he gets hit? Almost sounded like they thought the "chasing" was cute.

I am sorry that the poor dog lost his life because of an irresponsible pet owner. I feel badly that a child had to lose a beloved pet. I feel terribly that the poor UPS driver has this on his conscience. I am angry that their parents have set this kind of example for their children and then feel they deserve sympathy from everyone.

Accidents can and will happen but this, to me, was no accident. Let this be a lesson to all of us that tragedy only takes a second to occur. And we can't get that moment back again. That's the cold, hard reality of it.

(whose mom always told her "If you don't have something nice to say don't say anything... unless it's to save an animal's life").
I think that's really callous. How can people not have sympathy for someone who has lost their pet? Not even for the ten year old girl?

If somebody drives without a seat-belt on, should people have no sympathy for them or their family if they die in a car accident?

If someone walks in a bad section of town, should people have no sympathy if tragedy occurs?

If a house burns down killing a family, should people have no sympathy because they forgot to change their smoke detector batteries?

There is a big difference between having sympathy for someone and condoning their actions. I am not condoning allowing a dog to run free, I am offering sympathy to a family who has experienced a loss.

Good lord, we don't even have the whole story; some seem to be jumping to a conclusion that the family allowed the dog to do this rather than the dog escaping from what they believed to be a secured area, or perhaps was let out by a neighbor or even, perhaps, by the UPS guy. I have no clue as to the story and neither does anyone else here.

My dog loves to chew underwear, and we do everything possible to keep it away from him. If he found a pair at my brother's house and injured himself, would people condemn my actions and have no sympathy for me as well? If someone's leash broke because they hadn't inspected it for soundness every day, or perhaps it didn't securely fashion when they put it on, should they be shunned by their community?
I think anyone who uses the "Crossing Rainbow Bridge" thread to teach a lesson or make a point or hop on a soap box must be truly cold and callous individual. There are other spots on this forum to address issues which you feel strongly about.

Extending sympathy in the face of grief, no matter what the cause, is an act of human kindness and the right thing to do. To use another person's grief to teach them a lesson is just simply wrong, and not in keeping with the spirit of this forum.

Obviously, this wasn't the first time this had happened. The people knew the dog chased cars. Period. Chances of being killed by a car are a lot greater than swallowing underwear. I stand by my original comments.

Again, I DO feel sorry for this loss. Many of us belong to the forum to educate and be educated on being responsible pet owners. Not a good example to set. The only thing I regret about my comment is that this thread (Rainbow Bridge) may not be the best place to express an unpopular opinion like this.
Dear Merlin P,

I've very sorry about the love of your beloved pet. The grief you feel will one day be replaced by fond memories of Opal. It's so hard when they pass, perhaps harder when it was unexpected. Please accept my condolences to you and your little sister.
