One of the things that worry me is Shanti playing roughly with the cat…. Do you have any experience of adding a cat having a grown OES? Thanks Besos dani |

I think you will be fine. I had 3 cats that I had introduced to my OES. 1 kitten used to cuddle up in between my OES Newman's paws while he was asleep. Having 2 cats now that play rough with each other constantly, he would exercise his herding instinct and try to be the big mother hen to break up the cat fighting.
I'm sure Shanti will chase the kitten around or want to be in on the playing time but I doubt you have to worry about her hurting the cat. My one cat used to love interacting on a regular basis with Newman and my other cat would just tolerate him. It will be cute. Have you picked out which type of cat yet? My orange tabby (shelter cat) is the one that followed Newman around like a dog and I think all orange tabbies are really social like that from what I understand. |
I have 2 cats one is a dominant male and does not like dogs. If he feels the dog is bothering our little female he will attack the dog. Now the female will rub against the dog and they can all be in one room together, but if the dog trys to play or approach she gets hissed at and eventually attacked. She is learning, and now leaves the cats alone, the male cats has made her bleed twice now. They have been together for 1 mth, and now it's just matter of personal space and not crossing that boundary. My male cat will come into the kitchen and knows he controls the dog, all is well. He gets his tuna or milk, and the dog sits and watches from a distance. |
I had an adult cat when I got my OES. Riley (the cat) at first hissed, arched his back, swatted and was pretty much ticked off for the first several days. Now, while they don't play with each other, they get along ok. Truman (my OES) would really like Riley to play with him but Riley prefers to maintain his distance. When Riley does tolerate Truman, it's without any animosity so I guess that with time your cats and dogs will figure out their place in the order of things..... |
Hi Danik:
I wouldn't worry about adding a kitten to your household. Just monitor the situation for a while and make sure the kitten has a safe place to go when and if Shanti gets a little rough. I've set up a baby gate with a hole cut in the bottom that our cats can go through when Baxter gets too rough (of course what I think is rough and what our cats think is rough is two different things). Baxter considers two of our cats to be "his" cats. He actually grabs one of them by the tail and follows it around the house. The poor cat's fur tends to be rather spikey from Baxter mouthing it all the time. Merlin, one of our other cats and Baxter enjoy chasing each other through the house. When Merlin is bored, he will pounce on Baxter. First Baxter will chase Merlin one way through the house....and then Merlin will chase Baxter the other way. And when they are done with playing "tag", they lie down together. |
Hi Danik,
I think initially (depending on the age of the cat) they will learn to tolerate each other if not become good friends. Most animal shelters are really good now about stating if a cat has been socialized with dogs. Kittens may not initially run they'd probably hiss and the dog may bark, kitten hisses more, dog barks..Ha! you get the picture. They do however grow up to usually be pals. If the cat is already grown and has never been around dogs it's natural instinct may be to run and of course our furballs will chase. Never worry tho as it's very rare that they will actually catch them . The best suggestion is the baby gate where the cat has a room to escape or a cat door or even something that the cat has no trouble jumping up high out of the reach of the dog. Like those jungle gym thingies they have for cats that have an area for perching. I have four cats and while Merlin loves to chase if they run, he would never hurt them. The cats learn over time not to run as they did with my two other dogs and that the dogs can actually be good furblankets for them to cuddle up to. (My cats and Merlin haven't reached that stage yet as he is still too hyper for their taste.) 3 of the cats were here already and still kittenlike when Merlin arrived, the fourth was older and the kind that puts terror in dogs hearts. A cat with an attitude! You usually find the cat the winner as one scratch on the nose will make the pup/dog never approach them in a rough manner again. Good luck with whatever you decide. I think it would work out okay as a lot of posters have both living in harmony in their homes. |
I`ve always had cats and dogs together at the same time...now I don`t because I am trying to get pregnant and my doctor advised me not to have a cat yet since I could develop toxoplasmosis...but I remember when I was single we used to have "Cow" belgium Sheperd (Dog) and "Fox" my black cat...they got along really good....they could play endesly together and sometimes even hunt rats together..... dogs and cats like all animals need to adapt to each other ...once they do they set up their own rules. |
Vero, you can only get toxoplasmosis if you handle cats feces, whether in the litterbox or in the garden. if you wear gloves in the garden you are fine, and have hubby change the litter box. I had 2 cats through both pregnancies and both healthy, perfect babies.
If you want a cat, get a cat...you'll be fine. |
Congradulations on your soon to be new addition to the family. Lucy loves to chase Thumper to play and will quickly herd him back in the house if he goes out the back door but would never ever hurt him. My the way Thumper is a rabbit that is house trained and has free run of the house. I really believe that because they are herders they get along great with smaller animals. |
Thanks guys for the tips. i will keep you inform when the kitty arrives home.
I want a picture of Lucy chasing Thumper... pleaaaaaaasssse... that's so funny... Besos dani |
My first OES loved it when I brought a kitten home, he was sooo tiny and I was afraid she'd gulp him down...lol... Mic was just a pup then. about 5 months old, but still considerably larger than a kitten. She was great with him though, they became great friends, and when I took both of them to the vet at the same time to be fixed, the vet called when they woke up because he couldn't understand why they wouldn't settle down. they were in separate rooms and cages, but both were frantic. The vet was afraid they'd tear their stitches. I asked the vet to try putting them together, in the same cage, he sounded skeptical and worried, but he did it and called me back amazed. He said they cuddled up and settled right down.LOL
My new OES pup came into a house with two cats. One is that same kitten raised with my first OES, though he is older, and not as fond of a rambunctious pup, he still seems happy to have a canine companion again. The other cat is a little siamese female, and tolerates the pup as long as the pup allows the cat to mother her. The cat wants to clean the puppy, very strong maternal instincts I think, but if the pup decides she makes a good chew toy she gets a swat. Nothing serious, just getting put in her place....LOL |
By the way vero, I have always had cats, and dogs, during all three of my pregnancies, and all the kids are fine, no problems. I just make hubby clean the litter when I'm pregnant and wear gloves when gardening. I'm also planning on trying to have another one, we'll probably start trying in July. Let me know how things go for you! |
I got my new pup on March 20 and my one cat has been MIA since March 29 now. He is an indoor/outdoor cat so even though things were going well with the puppy-kitty introduction I think he ran away. I am so worried as we lost our 13 y.o. OES in Feb, Father-in-law in March and now my cat has just disappeared.
We have searched alll of the neighbor's properties high & low to make sure he wasn't hiding injured someplace. Have all of the missing posters out. Hitting the shelters today to see if anyone turned him in. Please try to buffer their early meetings as much as possible until they are completely used to the idea. I know every situation is different though. I am thinking if I really tried to separate them a little more this would never have happened. My other cat seems used to the idea of having the puppy here now but he seems really concerned that his cat friend isn't here. |
I'm so sorry your cat is missing. I know how you feel, I've had that happen too. Don't give up hope, sometimes they decide to torment us by disappearing for a few days and then stroll back in like nothing's happened. I've had that happen too! A couple of ideas:
Do you have any local radio stations that do a lost pet segment on air? We have one here and I know people who have found their pets that way. Does your cat have access to any false ceilings like maybe in your basement? My cat disappeared for 2 days and that's where he was. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. |
Thanks for your encouragement. I haven't given up hope yet. The trip to the shelter was very sad. Filling out a "lost" form which I knew would just get shuffled onto the desk of this county official. If he doesn't reappear I will just keep going there each several because apparently they euthanize animals rather quickly.
The cat was an indoor/outdoor cat so I know he is definitely outside because he hadn't come back in after his late afternoon romp. Thanks for the radio station suggestions. We live in the Philadelphia metro area so unfortunately that is not an avenue. I am going to put an ad in the paper tomorrow. I think I will have all of the bases covered then and hopefully he'll show up. On a happy note, my other cat let the puppy lick him all over his head this morning. |
I am so sorry to hear about your cat missing I think I would lose my mind if any of my animals got lost, they are like my kids, and my best friends. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.... glad to hear your other cat is accepting the pup. |

Yes. but just for 5 days. The vet told me that she was 6 months old and Shanti droves her crazy chasing her all the time and didn’t let her stretch after her nap. But Misha wasn't afraid of Shanti at all. It was fun to have 8 legs following me for breakfast. Sure. Shanti ate Misha food, and Misha Shanti’s.
As I said before, this was just for 5 days as the doorman told me that a neighbor from the 5th floor missed her cat. So she came to pick her up at that night. The funny thing is that when the owner putted the cat on the floor, “misha” wanted to come back to my house, even Shanti was seating at the door. That night, Shanti slept next to the front door like waiting for “Misha”, pooor Shan… he misses his sister cat!!! FYI: The owner thinks that the kitten fell from the roof to my patio. Poor Misha, she might be so scared after! besos dani PS. TO UNDERSTAND THIS "STORY" GO TO THIS TOPIC http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=926 |
