Bears put to sleep in Virginia

This was so sad. We have a free park here in Richmond that has many species of animals in it. They have a bear enclosure that holds 2 black bears, both rescued by the Game Department and have lived here for pretty much their whole lives. They are in a naturalistic enclosure, but are secured off by fences and stuff.

Earlier this week, somehow a 4 year old boy was bitten on the hand by one of the two bears. Apparently he climbed a fence (there's a story going around that the parent lifted him over the fence) to reach the final barrier fence to the bears, where he stuck his hand inside the fence and was bitten. (There's also a story that he had an apple in his hand that he was going to feed the bear)

Apparently the family then left the park without notifying park officials and went to the hospital. The hospital notified the park a day later. The boy didn't need stitches and was given antibiotics. They had to put both bears to sleep because they didn't know which one it was and they didn't know if the bear might have rabies.

Turns out neither bear had rabies. This is just so sad. And could have been prevented (in so many ways)--from the either negligence or stupidity of the parent to either allow the child to wander away, or to help him reach the bear...and it could have been prevented if the state hadn't been so hasty in destroying the animals.

That is such a sad story. I can't believe how inconsiderate some people are - and it all could have been prevented. Did the family get in any trouble for being in a restricted zone?
Very Sad, not the bears fault. Can't believe how quickly they destroyed the bears for the incident!!

Always nuts around that don't obey the signs etc on any animal exhibit, but boy you can't blame the bears after reading that one.

We had a nut that climbed into a lion exhibit at the zoo quite a few years ago and got bitten, but they did not put the lions down, they took him away for mental evaluation!! Maybe they should of done that with the parents of the boy!!

Very sad for the bears
Barney that is terrible. I don't understand why the bears had to be put down. The parents were at fault allowing their child into the safely enclosure. Surely that is why there is a safely fence - to keep people out. Putting the bears 'down' to my idea was extreme.
I'm sure the idiot parents feel no remorse or shame for their stupidity! The zoo should charge the parents to replace the bears. Their stupid act has destroyed two bears and deprived countless other families of the opportunity to visit the bears.

My husband worked for the Park Service while going thru college. and now has spent 48 years with the Forest Service. The stories he tells of people trying to pet the bears, bison, mountain goats and then surprised when they were attacked, mauled, bitten, butted, etc and demanding the dangerous animals be eliminated. Hey, we could use a few less people in the world.

That is so sad and unfair. It really stinks.
That is so sad. I love bears (second to OES). People are so dumb.
And yet again...what are parents teaching their children? How to grow up and be morons like they are  Would anyone even be suprised if they sued for "emotional distress" or something equally ignorant?
How sad that they put the bears to sleep :(
They should have put down the boy's parents for being too stupid to be part of the human race. People like that should not be reproducing!
Really sad and seems like a bad decision.
They shouldn't be allowed to have kids! Geez! What kind of parent lets a four year old child climb into a bear habitat??

How sad.
Barney-I saw that on the news the other night. Hubby and I were very angry about it, especially as new parents ourselves. It could only be the parent's fault in this. How else would a child get over the fence? I can only see two ways...negligence or failure to watch your child OR assisting your child to the bears. Putting these two bears down was a senseless act that the parents involved caused and we think the adult(s) should be put down for their irresponsibility as parents. Guess that is just our opinion :rimshot:
I just wonder if anyone thought to notify Child Protective Services. In most places, they have to get an official complaint to be able to intervene.
Too stupid to safely raise children works for me.

It makes me so angry.
This makes me mad. He does wrong and the poor bears get the blame.

Have the parents investagated.
Makes me mad too.
I hate it when animals are put down when it should be the stupid humans who suffer.
So sad, the park should not have had the bears where children could reach them, a double fence at least 18 inches apart would have solved that. Also, the parents shouldn't have let a 4 yr old wander anywhere alone, let alone near bears.
There were several barriers to protect humans from the bears and apparently the boy was on the other side of a chain link fence and stuck his hand through. And, rumor (i know, i know) has it that the parent was the one to help the boy reach that point (he had to climb a few other fences to reach that point). It is just so sad. Apparently the city is going to do an investigation to see if the parents were negligent and should be charged with anything or aked to repay anything.
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out...
