Well, if it is for the 'thrill' that is what feeds pyromaniacs. They love to see things burn--it's part of the disorder.
As for the fact of them being churches, I can't imagine these people who are doing it care if they go to @#$ or even believe there is such a thing. They are obviously not 'that kind of person'. It is very sad, though. We had a string of church burnings here in Richmond bout a year or two ago...I hope they catch these people. |
As some of you know I have a daughter who lives in Al. near the coast. Daphine its called. She works in Mobile.
I have read about these fires. I am not to sure that they are set the the thrill. I just have a feeling it is much more than that. It is very sick to do this. I love my church and don't know what I would do if someone set it on fire. |

Well, they said that it doesn't seem to be racial, and as far as they can tell nothing has been taken from them. |
You are right, it does not seem to be racially motivated. I wonder if it could be denominationally related? The largest percentage were named as Baptist churches. Some of the were non denominational. |
I think they're instruments of satan. They feed on stirring things up and enjoy the thrill of the "response". They're bullies, just "cowards" creeping around in the darkness trying to start fights that cause separation and destruction between the people/races etc.....
The true "church" is the believer's, not the buildings. When the "church" enters the buildings, the Holy Spirit wants it to be "set it on fire", satan could care less about the "burning of the buildings", its the responses reactions of the "church" he's seeking - the destruction. |
The BIG problem is the people who burn down churches dont think they will go too hell. They fel burning down lets say a church where mostly black people attend they feel they are doing God's work.It is crazy, but remember we arent talking about the smartest brain matter out there. I used too live in Port Saint Lucie Florida, thats the main stomping grounds for the KKK,and WOW!!Some crazy's out there. They believe ge ridding of the blacks assures them a front row into heaven .So the funny thing is what a surprise for them once they lay too rest w/ a smile upon their faces!!! Usually when it comes too church burnings a white power group is involved and the brain matter is very thin. There is no excuse except IGNORANCE!! |
Tanya , you hit the nail on the head. This is what I was thinking without saying it. Did not want to say it was racially on here. Did not want to offend anyone. But the first thing I thought was KKK. Or some group like it. |
But like I said earlier, authorities say it doesn't appear to be racially motivated. Predominantly white congregations have been burned, along with predominantly black, as well as mixed, so the race factor doesn't seem to be the issue here, unless they are trying to make it look like it's not by burning other churches. |
We live in the evil one's world.
But we can counter this evil by coming together both as Christians and nonChristians to rebuild the churches. One does not fight evil with evil, but with goodness. |
They do not believe it to be racially motivated. As barney1 said, it was both predominately white, predominately black and mixed. They do believe they may have a lead and arrests should be soon. |
I thought they caught two teenage boys for doing this? I could have sworn I heard it on our local news (this is all fairly close to us). |
Gail-They arrested two teenagers in an unrelated "copycat" fire that occured last week. They do not believe this to be related. The first ten fires were all started at the altar and this last one was from a "cocktail" thrown against the outside of the church, causing very little damage. We must not live to far from each other. The first fires were in the county where I live. |

I live in Columbus, MS - it's about 45 minutes from Tuscaloosa. I knew I remembered hearing they arrested someone for burning churches, but I didn't realize it was copy-cats. It's hard to pay attention to the news sometimes. The kids are usually running around like wild animals because Daddy just got home, and I'm trying to cook dinner during that time too, lol |
Gail-I live about 30 mins East of Tuscaloosa. I think I see a playdate in there somewhere. I totally understand about the kids. Mine are grown now, so I only have Puddy to distract me and he makes as much noise as the kids used to when Dad gets home. |

That sounds like fun! |
So they've arrested 3 men in connection with these fires. Turns out they were college students who did it as a joke, initially setting fire to 5 churches, and then later 4 more to throw officials off.
I guess I missed the part on how they thought this was funny?... From msnbc.com http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11726024/ BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Two college students arrested Wednesday in a string of nine rural Alabama church arsons told authorities that the first fires were set as “a joke” and later blazes were intended as a diversion, federal agents said. A third college student was arrested later Wednesday in the serial arsons, according to WVTM-TV of Birmingham. Benjamin Nathan Moseley and Russell Lee Debusk Jr., both students at Birmingham-Southern College, appeared in federal court Wednesday and were ordered held on church arson charges pending a hearing Friday. Matthew Lee Cloyd, reportedly a student at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, was arrested midday, the WVTM reported. An ATF affidavit said Moseley told agents on Wednesday that he, Cloyd and Debusk went to Bibb County in Cloyd’s Toyota sport utility vehicle on Feb. 2 and set fire to five churches. A witness quoted Cloyd as saying Moseley did it “as a joke and it got out of hand,” according to the affidavit. Moseley also told agents the four church fires in west Alabama were set “as a diversion to throw investigators off,” an attempt that “obviously did not work,” the affidavit said. Arson investigators scheduled an afternoon news conference at the Tuscaloosa airport to discuss the arrests. The first two suspects were arrested Tuesday night, NBC’s Pete Williams reported. WVTM-TV, citing the state fire marshal’s office, said the two are students at Birmingham Southern College and were arrested at a college dorm. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives made the Alabama church arson case a top priority as scores of agents joined state and local law officers in the probe. Authorities analyzed tire tracks and traced the purchase of the tires to Cloyd. ‘We are relieved’ The pastor at one of the destroyed churches said he was told of the arrests by investigators. “We are relieved. We were fearful while they were on the loose because we did not know their agenda,” said Jim Parker, pastor of the Ashby Baptist Church in Brierfield, which was burned to the ground. Ten Baptist churches in rural parts of the state were burned by arsonists last month. Nine of the fires — five on Feb. 3 in Bibb County and four on Feb. 7 in west Alabama — have been linked. Another church fire on Feb. 11 in Lamar County has been ruled arson, but investigators have not determined if it is connected to the others. The ATF has scheduled a mid-day press conference to discuss the case. No racial pattern There was no racial pattern — five of the churches had white congregations and five black. All were Baptist, the dominant faith in the region, and mostly in isolated country settings. A federal source said the apparent motive was that the three students just liked to set and watch fires. Five of the churches were destroyed and four were damaged, including one in which congregants, alerted during the night that churches were afire, arrived just as the apparent arsonists were leaving. That fire, quickly put out, had been set in the sanctuary near the altar — a pattern in the other church arsons in Bibb County and west Alabama. |
I was just about to post that... I don't see how the "joke" started either. |
A joke?? you got to be kidding... I am glad they were cought. |
They have arrested three college students from UAB for the arsons of these churches. The fact that they are only kids makes it an even sadder situation. They claim that they set the first two as a prank, the next three because of the thrill of hearing the fire trucks and the last four to try to throw the investigaors off. To think that these kids threw away their education and life for a "prank". Not a very funny prank I might add. |
