nope, my mom just cooked the tots on a tray in the oven by themselves...nothing fancy done to them!
1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
1/2 onion, chopped
4 cups frozen mixed vegetables
1 (19 ounce) can cream of chicken soup
1 (32 ounce) package frozen potato rounds

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Spray 9x13 glass baking dish with cooking spray. Spread hamburger into bottom of pan, covering entire bottom, gently tamping beef down. Sprinkle with diced onions. Layer frozen veggies as next layer. Cover with the soup, straight from the can, carefully spreading with spatula to cover entirely. Layer tater tots on top, covering entire top with tots. Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees) for 1 hour, or until hamburger is done. Check after 30 minutes; if tots are getting too brown, turn down to 350 degrees F (190 degrees C).

Found this on the web. Type in "tater tot" casserole using Yahoo.

I love Tater Tots. Anyone know the comedian Larry the Cable Guy who does a Christmas song and the last line is "I like Tater Tots?" Hysterical.
That looks pretty close Paula- thanks for digging that up for me! I think my mom probably added in some ketchup, and I don't think there were veggies, but that is a good nutritional addition. Yummy!!!! Can't wait for dinner...
Sounds yummy.
Yummy, That sounds good. All I ever had was plain tater tots.
I am going to have to try that recipe.
It is yummy- definitely a crowd pleaser. One of my faves growing up, although I was not a picky eater at all... what's not to love- tater tots, hamburger, onions, ketchup (I always added extra on top of my serving as a kid- love that tangy zing!) it's kinda like fries and a burger all rolled into one!

guess what's for dinner tonight!!!
Ryan will love this. I need to learn more recipes for the kids.
(I am great with adult foods for Billy & I, but have no real kid's recipes)

Last night I tried a Salisbury Steak recipe. I kinda combines two recipes that I found on the internet. Ryan has never had it before and I cut it up before I gave it to him. He looks at his plate and says....are you ready for this?.... "Mom, I've never eaten poop before." 8O
After I stopped laughing I told him it was definitely NOT poop.
He loved it and even mopped up all the gravy with his bread.
Hayley decided Mommy's food looked better than what she was eating and ate an entire half of a piece :cow:

I guess my dinner choice for last night was a good one. I am also going to make this one tonight. Well that or order a Pizza :D
See, I'm torn about 'kids' recipes.' My mom had her arsenal of casseroles and sloppy joes and cheesy things all that kid stuff, which we all loved. My older brother, who will be 30 this year, still asks for some of those dishes to be made. And my husband has all his favorites, too, that his mom made, which have to be made EXACTLY the same way his mom made them.

The reason I'm torn is: usually these aren't the healthiest of dishes. Which might not be a problem if you are a skinny, active 10 year old who has a bottomless pit. But what happens when the kid grows up and the metabolism slows down, but the only food they like are these dishes?

I'm sure when I have kids I'll probably end up making these dishes...but I was a chubby kid (very active in sports, though) and I had skinny brothers, so I would hate to have the same situation with my kids, trying to help the girl be at a healthy weight without necessary pointing it out to everyone...but not wanting to make separate dinners...Sorry...just thinking aloud!
Ryan is so thin!! He is a VERY picky eater. So I need to start cooking stuff that he likes. I swear when he turns sideways he disappears :cow:
Hayley pretty much likes whatever I am eating...lol She seems to like healthy stuff.
Ryan usually eats his foods (Mac & Cheese, Spaghetti, Raviolis...etc)
since he never likes what I am making for Billy & I. All this kids does if drink Chocolate Milk! He does not like to eat.
I know I shouldn't be eating fatty foods, but every once in a while is ok.
Also my Mom rarely cooked anything besides packaged dinners and when she did cook it's awful!!!
I want my kids growing up with favorite dishes :D
me too!

that's what i loved about being a kid. getting a hot dog, fish sticks, macaroni, pizza, etc, etc for dinner. it made me hate the nights we had lima beans or something equally gross but healthy... but it also made me appreciate the easy quick fat dinners.

btw, tator tots (Extra crispy) rock.

I agree....that is how we make our fries too 8)
CRISPY TATERS ROCK!!! lol
I have a "new" favorite... crispy crowns! They're like 1/2 a tator tot- more coin shaped, so you don't get that sogginess in the middle that the full size tots can get. Bonus being that they're a little bit more kid sized too, being a bit smaller.

You know, as much as I love all the easy mom dishes that I had as a kid, I really don't make them that often as an adult, maybe a couple times a year per dish...My tastes grew up as I did... then again My mom never made anything real atrocious for us to eat, no cheese on our veggies, or fried foods, etc, all our meals were well balanced. Although when my dad had to make dinner, we almost always ended up with potato chips as our starch instead of noodles or rice or bread or anything else with redeeming nutritional value

I can remember having popcorn for dinner one night... not tomato soup and popcorn or anything, just popcorn... ah Dad!!!
oooh, the crispy crowns sound good..that was always my complaint with tater tots--the sogginess.

We made ours extra crisp too!
My mother never made separate foods for us kids. She was very adamant about that--if you don't like what is on the table, you don't eat. She always tells me I was a picky eater as a kid though and she used to worry that I wouldn't grow because I didn't eat. Now of course she thinks I'm fat (well, I'm a little chunky). I do remember her making me eat lamb stew and I told her if I ate it I would throw up. She made me eat it, I puked at the table and she sent me to bed without supper! She doesn't remember this though.

Sorry for the hijack.
ha ha ha! That is so funny! I can't believe you actually puked at the table. What a rotten kid :D

We had many marathon nights of my parents saying you can't be excused until you eat your ____ and then us kids sitting there not having a care in the world, nothing else to do, figuring our parents would cave before we did...My sister sat there once til 11pm and then was sent to bed.
We werent allowed to leave the table until we said "may I be excused.." I was about 5 or 6 and I remember not being able to say it...I sat at the dining room table till bedtime..crying and hiccupping...mom and dad took turns sitting next to me, just waiting for me to say it...I held my ground that night and never did...but I did then next night and there on out
PLEASE don't tell any of my Cardiac Rehab Patients but TATER TOTS ARE MY FAVORITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When my daughter and I were living alone together every now and then we would have NOTHING for dinner but TATER TOTS   I'd cook an entire bag of tater tots and make a "special sauce" (mayo and ketchup) and we'd sit in front of the TV and PIG OUT on Tater Tots.

Gosh, I haven't thought about that (or done it  ) FOR YEARS!!!

Thanks for the memory
Ginny, are tater tots THAT bad for you?

Yum, maybe my husband will want only tater tots for dinner tonight...
You guys are making Mr. J miss Sonic (Which we don't have here). I always thought he was weird because I'd order chicken fingers and fries... while he ordered his tater tots. First person I met that would rather have some tots over fries. He orders a #1 at mcdonald's and gives me the fries. HE'S NUTS!

Ah ha! That is why you should buy crispy crowns instead- 1/2 the size 1/2 the guilt... Right??? I wonder if that is prepared baked or prepared fried? I didn't know frozen potatoes could have much fat in them- I always bake mine, it makes me feel less guilty!!!
prepared baked!!!! FRIED? OMG, I can only imagine!!

They add the oil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Read the labels, you'll be amazed at what you discover.
Whenever Mom was making Chili, I would be bad so I got sent to bed without Dinner. I hated Chili growing up.
Oh parents!! How they can ruin us. My father would sit beside me and flex his bicep muscle saying it was a mouse waiting to get out and eat my dinner. I must have said, "Fine" because there after it was the rat was going to get out and bite me before eating my dinner. Since then I've hated mice and don't leave a thing uneaten on my plate.
