So, I'm thinking of a couple things, here. We've had her for 2 weeks, so maybe she is suddenly settled in, and her anxieties have all of a sudden disappeared. Not likely to happen quick like that, but hey. I'm grasping at straws, here. She is still eating like a horse, so that is good, but still very skinny and boney. And I have noticed her licking her chops a lot, and is thirsty. And scratching a lot, too. Hmmmm. When she first came here she was on antibiotics for her raw skin, and she is now over them, and most of the scabs are gone, but maybe the infection is back. So, I dropped off a stool sample this morning to check for worms, (it was nice and firm) and have an appointment to bring her in later today for a full exam. We are not used to a calm, quiet, lay-around-the-house Dixie at all, so it is very strange...Hmmmmm. |

I hope everything is ok. |
Keep us posted, I hope all is well. Maybe she is just settling in and her "personality" is emerging. She might just be more laid back than you realized at first and now she is comfortable enough to let her guard down. Tasker is calm quiet lay around the house, he'd be the type to go out and lay in the middle of the yard no matter what was going on around him!!! |
Hope everything is OK with Dixie
Has she has definately been spayed? Only asking because sometimes before a heat they can get like that, very down and just mope around. Also if they have had a heat somtimes around 4-6 weeks after the heat has finished the same sort of thing? Are her gums healthy too, sometimes with the licking of the chops might be a tooth problem or inflamed gums? Just two thoughts there, give dixie a hug from us at least it should be nothing too off with her as she is still eating well, always worries me if they are off there food too. |
hope dixie is fine it is such a worry when they act out of sorts please keep us posted

Well, we are back from the vet. Yes, Dixie was spayed by the shelter, and still has the obvious scar and shaved fur.
She weighs 47 pounds and the vet feel she should be 55 to 60 pounds so she is very thin. The stool sample is negative, but that isn't 100% certain so we are deworming her, anyway. And she is going on puppy food to try to help with the weigth gain. Poor Dixie's scabs are still not all healed, and look ugly and, she has a bad ear infection in both ears. Poor baby, was so good at the vets. She climbed onto the vet assistant's lap and gave her gentle kisses. And when her sore ears were being checked Dixie just hid her face in my chest and didn't move during the ordeal. Bless, her. |
Poor Dixie,
I bet her equilibrium was all messed up from the ear infection. That used to happen to our dog Harley. I hope she feels better soon and gains some weight. |
Hope Dixie feels better soon, and is back to her same spunky self |
Ohhh bad, but goody! A little otomax or whatever they're prescribing in your neck of the woods and in 2 days she'll be feeling lots better -- but don't stop the antibiotic/antifungal until the vet says it's ok.
If you think she may be the victim of recurrent infections, perhaps a little longer course than usual -- just to make sure that it doesn't come back this time. Yay! |
Hi,
It's often said with rescues that their true personalities sometimes doesn't emerge until weeks or months later after the honeymoon period. Not that this is what is causing Dixie's behavior but she may have been so happy to be in your home that she thought she had died and gone to heaven the first 2 wks! Now that she has settled in and is feeling comfortable in your household she can show you she is still ailing. This isn't a bad thing at all as most dogs will never show vulnerablility to other dogs or people too unless they feel really comfortable and safe. Perhaps that's it and if that is true in this case - while disconcerting to you - maybe she's trusting you enough to show you her vulnerability. You're doing a fantastic job and please keep us posted. I hope Dixie feels better soon. My boys are sending her sloppy sheepie kisses. Marianne and the boys |
I hope Dixie starts to feel better soon. Murphy sends his sister sheepie kisses. |
I've been thinking about Dixie.... I hope the ear drops are helping! |
Glad to hear it's nothing serious, she should be back to normal in no time
Did they do an ear swab to see if it was a bacterial or fungal infection? If it is fungal, antibiotics won't work, and vice versa. Canaural ear drops are antibiotic, antifungal and antiinflammatory, so if she has that it should work regardless. |
I think the otomax is all three as well. |
The drops were to start right away, Surolan, to help right away. We can't start her on antibiotics we got a urine sample, so we don't get a false negative....Talk about a proud mommy of an upright.... My 14 year old got Dixie's urine sample for me today when I was at work.....gotta love him
Once we get the results we will see what we will do about the infection on her skin and in her ears....and we need to fatten her up.... She loves her food, so that should be a problem. |
