My husband and I are seeking a female sheepie. We had a female sheepie before but she died last year and we miss her a lot. She had blue eyes and we would like to find one just like her from a reputable breeder in Eastern Canada or North Eastern USA. I contacted a few breeders, but they said that they never have Sheepies with blue eyes. I live in Quebec City, Canada. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you! |

Hello and welcome to (posting at) the forum!
Your best bet for a referral is Tarja Peters. She is a member here at the forum and is the chairperson of the Breeder Referral program Old English Sheepdog Club of America (OESCA). I am sure she will be happy to assist you!! Through email here at the forum: http://forum.oes.org/profile.php?mode=email&u=498 Or through a Private Message (PM) here at the forum: http://forum.oes.org/privmsg.php?mode=post&u=498 I'd guess that the Old English Sheepdog and Owners Club of Canada (OESOCC) also has some sort of a referral program as well. Good luck! |
As Ron pointed out, your best bet is to go with breeder referral.
Also, sometimes pups are born with one or both blue eyes, but a reputable breeder does not breed for that on purpose. Lack of pigment on the head can sometimes mean there is also a hearing problem. This happens quite often if someone is breeding OES specifically to get white heads and blue eyes. |
I understand that you miss your girl but maybe it would be nice to not try to find a pup that looks exactly like her. Our first sheepdog had blue eyes and a white head and I fell in love with those beautiful blue eyes. I am happy to say that our new pup has brown eyes, black/gray ears & a black eye patch and we are equally in love with him as we were our first.
Key thing is to get a pup from a reputable breeder to ensure a wonderful temperamant. |
Bonjour Danielle .
Comment ça va? Is the Great Winter Carnival over yet? Looks like a fantastic party. Here's a website of people around the province that have dogs to give away or to sell. There was someone last summer with sheepie puppies for sale so you never know, keep checking. [Sorry, no links to "puppies for sale" sites, even en Français ] Good luck , Uncle pete |
Stay away from a breeder that specilizes in whiteheads {snowcaps} with blue eyes...... A breeder can not limit their gene pool with out having problems......Many of them are produces deaf puppies..... A lot of them end up in rescue...... As an x-breeder when someone contacted me that just lost a Baby.....I would suggest to them to go with a puppy that was marked totally different.....They are the same but they are all different too. You will never get another Baby that is exactly like the Baby you lost........Just My Opinion.....Kaye |
Thank you all for replying and for your advise. I contacted Tarja Peters and she gave me the name of the person in charge nearest me in the US. I called a few breeders in the US but they couldn't help me with blue eyes. I know that brown eyes are beautiful too. In fact, all OES puppies are adorable and irresistible. I'm sure I'll fall in love again with one when I'm ready.
Meanwhile, I contacted a few breeders in Quebec and I will go visit them next week-end. Until then, if anyone hears about an available puppy with blue eyes, please contact me. Uncle Pete: your French seems to be very good! You even put the ç under the c... Yes, the Quebec Carnival has ended last week-end with the parade under -32 degrees Celcius (with wind chill). It was extremely cold and windy. But it doesn't stop a Sheepie from going outside and relaxing in the snow, even when it is this cold. |
Bonjour, Danielle! Je suis aussi de la ville de Quebec mais je demeure en Columbie Britannique! Heurese de faire votre connaissance! (Translation: I'm also from Quebec City but I live in BC now.Glad to meet you!)
I now have Willoughby, a "white head" . Both Bentley and Toby (now sadly missed) had dark ears and looked like Marianne's Panda. I started looking for a puppy with similar markings but adopted Willoughby whom I love dearly. There are a few OES breeders near Orangeville, Ont. where I used to live. Bentley was bred in that area. He was a rescue and a delightful companion. Bonne chance! |
I'm so excited--I can still read and understand french! AT least not all of those years of taking it were a waste! |
Bonjour Lynda,
Salut Danielle.
I was born and raised in Gatineau for a lot of years so French is my first language. I'll PM you and give you a few places to contact in PQ for sheepies. Hope you eventually find that special angel and don't let those blue eyes fool you, that black nose and fluffy hair gets me all the time so I'm sure that one of those would make you melt too. Blue eyes- brown eyes, just go for the one that will make you smile and want to come home with you . Bonne soirée. Uncle Pete |
I would be very wary of a breeder that is trying to get a whitehead/blue eye combination. They should be breeding for health and temperament. as noted before that could signal deafness. |
Merci, Danielle! I have had only OES as companions and I am totally attached to them. I remember when I was in counsellor training years ago finding out in a practice session that my OES Toby was really an extention of my own excentricities! I think that interpretation was probably very apt! Please keep us posted as you search for your puppy. |
I'm still searching ... but not necessarily for a sheepdog with blue eyes anymore. I'll be visiting a few breeders near Montreal next week-end. I'll keep you posted. |
Dr. Sandra Crowne of St. Agatha, Ontario has an excellent reputation. Her e-mail is: dearbear_at_ladykin@yahoo.ca |
As people have said, some breeders are out there breeding specifically for the white head/blue eyes and don't care that some of their dogs will be deaf. This is not to say that a deaf dog is worthless because that is far from the truth... it's just some things may be prevented with careful breeding.
I too put this blue-eyed restriction on my future puppy two years ago after we lost our blue-eyed sheepie-mix. At the bottom of this page http://www.pomeroys.com/EmmaDarby/OurDogs.htm you'll find the info I was sending to prospective breeders back in January 2004. Kaye set me straight on why I should NOT be looking strictly that specific trait and we purchased Emma and Darby from her instead. She bred for temperament and health. Funny thing is I finally did get my blue-eyed pup... she is my 3rd sheepie and she was born with a birth defect. The day she was born I wanted her despite her challenges... praying she would survive. Kaye pulled her through with tube feedings day and night and with the help of Anne Hennion, a great lady I found online who had experience with hundreds of cleft palate pups http://hennwood.com . It just turned out Kaytee had one blue eye (the other didn't develop properly and is white). |
Congratulations to 6girls for her dedication! Your house must be pretty lively. I'm sure you never have a dull moment. I can't wait to have at least one little puppy girl to take care of (if I can find her somewhere). I'm still searching. |
Bonjour, Tous le monde! Translation of Daniele's response to me:
She says that of all the dogs she has had in the past, OES are the most beautiful, especially when they are well groomed. Danielle has had a Beagle,Great Dane, Labrador but OES have won her heart. She says that she knows that she will have another OES girl with brown eyes whom she will love as much as her departed girl. It's impossible to resist OES! Merci! |
She also does OES rescue locally. I went to her place, when we first got Bosley. She is about 40 minutes away from me. Super lady. |
My beautiful 2 year old puppy Francesca has amazing ice blue eyes and a completely white head. But she is also 100 percent deaf in both ears, according to a BAER test. She is a really beautiful dog and gets compliments whether she's in full coat or sheared. Though I would have liked to breed her, obviously, she has been spayed. But other than that, I have no regrets about a deaf dog, though I think we were lucky with her disposition - she is incredibly good natured and well behaved, both with our family and other dogs. Still, deafness is a risk you will take with a blue eyed, whitecap. |
Hi Francesca's Mom!
Your Francesca must be very beautiful and unique. I'm sure you love her with all your heart. I'm visiting a breeder in Ontario, near the Quebec border, next week-end. She is a reputable breeder and she shows her dogs in the US as well. I saw a picture of her Sheepies and they are so beautiful! I don't care anymore if my baby has blue or brown eyes, I'm sure I will love her very much. Who can resist a Sheepdog? They are all so cute and loveable. |
Are they easily trainable? |
I owned only one sheepdog and she was easy to train, although at times a little bit stubborn. But she was eager to please us. If you search in the other topics, maybe you could find more advice on training from people who have had more than one. Keep in mind that Sheepies need a lot of grooming. |
