Human Nature....... I think what happens sometimes when someone comes in and states their opinion on medical treatment..... If that opinion differs at all from what the Vet has said , the Walls Come Up........ People become defensive and feel some guilt.....Because maybe I haven't been a Good Momma and not taking good care of My Baby........ I think this is normal...... I used to be guilty of this myself........ My Opinions come from years of dealing with Vets......I am not certainly not Anti Vet.......I just think you have to be as knowlegable as you can to be a Good Partner to the Vet.....This is to the benefit of Your Baby..... The more knowledgable you are the better decisions you can help the Vet make.... After all it all About Having The Healthiest Babies We Can Have. There are things that I do that most people think are radical and extreme......But, They work for me......I try to just back to the basics and to no as much as I can that is natural and not chemicla.... A STONG IMMUNE SYSTEM can fight off almost anything........Just My Opinion.....Kaye Second Chance OES Rescue |
Hi Shug,
Excellent post and I agree with you! We humans should do the same with our doctors too - ask questions, research our own medical problems, and thus become better informed in order to ask even more questions. I've told this story a gazillion times on here about when my Shaggy had immune deficiency thrombocytopenia. She was on chemo, steriods and a host of other drugs. I had to question the quality of her life as she was like a huge bloated dog that was unable to move much. I had nothing to lose. I researched a host of medical books, natural medicines, immune boosters in food...ect...my vet was very open to my search as we were at the end of the road with Shaggy. As a result of the change of diet to Shaggy, natural foods and vitamins ..her blood platelete count went from 10 (near death) to 185...and she lived for another 6 years. She remained on those foods for the rest of her life...as did Blue who is nearing his 17th birthday. My elderly cats passed away at the ages of 19-22. While I am not a health nut at all I see the importance in good nutrition in my furballs. I'm a bit of a hypocrite in some ways as I dont do it for myself but Shug you are so right....find out what foods, natural pills can be great immune boosters sometimes that's what needed instead of an overabundance of other methods. Saying that, you should always seek advice for those knowledgable in the naturapathic or holistic healing methods. Marianne and the boys |
Shug, I agree completely to not put complete emphasis on a vet's diagnosis. Pet owners should very fortunate that we have the internet at our disposal to research any condition. And one of the great resources is this forum especially since there are common breed specific problems.
I am fortunate that my current vet is very good and looks to medicating as a last resort. Whatever she tells me during my visititation with her, I research the best that I can and then bombard her with questions. I think if any person has a vet that will not take the time to answer your questions, should look for a new one. What we can do as pet owners, is to monitor our pets symptoms as best we can, in order to provide as much info possible to the vet so they can make an accurate diagnosis. I had a vet before really drop the ball on diagnosing a cat before. Thankfully he left the practice and our current vet saved his life. |
