Does your younger dog groom the older dog?

My Sheepie is constantly grooming my Huskie. My Huskie never returns the favor. Do you think age has something to do with this? The huskie is older. Has anybody else noticed this behavior with their dogs?

I think it's more a matter of personality. Daisy is the youngest and will groom all the boys when they let her. When Beau was here he and Daisy would groom each other, they were the best of friends, Beau was older than Daisy.
My Beaumont (15 month old OES) will groom Tahje (12 yr old shi/poo) and Tahje never returns the favor.

I too think it's a personality thing.
Maggie (younger) often tries to lick Chummie's mouth or lick the cat Miles. Chum and Miles both seem to find it very annoying.
Hi,

Ever notice pups lick their parents on the jowls? It's a sign of respect for the dominant member of the pack. Our dogs lick us too - not to "kiss us" as seen in people's eyes but also shows respect to we uprights.

Now having said that ...when we tell them "gimme a kiss" and stick our faces nears theirs....they lick. What I said above is not a hard and fast rule either. Anyone has to just walk in an elementary school and obverve little girls sitting down listening to a story - 99% of the time you can see girls playing with each others hair, brushing, braiding...

Chimps also groom the dominant members of their group to gain favoritism but the dominant ones never return the favor. The mother chimps always groom their little ones. We groom our boys/girls and in my household it's Merlin that cleans Panda's ears nightly and Merlin is the dominate one in the house. Maybe it has nothing to do with dominant vs subordinates...perhaps it's just helping a pal out. :D

Marianne and the boys
I think it's maybe a sheepdog thing.... we have 2 OES and a husky here, my oes do groom each other, but the husky is more aloof with both people and dogs.

What does it mean when the younger one likes to drag the older one around by the neck?

Clyde's pretty relentless when he wants to play and he hides around the corner from the back door and when Lucy comes through the dog door, he flies from around the corner and attacks her! He'll yank her by the back of the neck all the way to the other end of the house. She could get loose and, though she really doesn't seem to like it, she doesn't get angry either.

Think it's a love bite?
Rags & Pepsi groom each other. It is so cute to watch.
Barney sometimes licks one of our cats (who is older) and I think it is so cute. But then you have to watch the cat lick himself for the next half hour to try and get the dog cooties off of him...
Yep! Ben and Kiara groom one another! Ben more so then "Ki"
:D Willoughby likes to lick Edwina, my senior cat. She tolerates him and thinks it's Ok. She established who's who early on by hitting him on the nose, claws in, when he got too rough. Right now, he's grooming Renfrew, his Sheepie toy!
What a great pic of Willoughby! He's growing up so fast-- he's beautiful!
:D Thank you! He's 8 months in that photo and is bigger now. Luckily. he won't be a large sheepie! I'm not as strong as I used to be! We're about to go to the park as he thinks I've spent enough time reading about his relatives!
That is a great pic, he almost doesn't look real!
Wow, I thought that was a painting.
He is SO white! 8O
What a beautiful dog you have!
:D Thank you both! He looks very good right now as he had "the works" at the groomers. They took pictures and when they send them I'll post so you can see how he's grown.
:D My younger sheepie (Gus) is always biting my big guy Sam on the head. He waits at the top of the stairs and waits for Sam to come up and grabs his head. Sam hates it! It's funny, Sam is a huge male and Gus is a little smaller than Sam, but it seems like Gus is more the dominant male. Even as a little puppy. Our vet couldn't believe how he just bossed the big guy around. They constantly "clean" each other. It drives me crazy. When my sheepie Harry was alive he NEVER groomed Sam. But Harry was the dominant male and spoiled rotten! We always called him King Harry because that's how he portrayed himself.
My twin boy Bischons are like that. Only one does the wash job. the other never returns the favor. The smaller male is not as outgoing as the larger one. I don't know what to think.
Buddy will groom and lick all of the cats and Willow. The cats even go up to him and lay across his feet so he will groom/lick/love them. He is so good with them and they totally trust him. He also loves to lick/kiss me.
