Anybody up for camping?

Wouldn't it be fun for a bunch of us to meet up somewhere?

I'll drive a fair distance - I don't care. :)

I think my days of working 60-70 hour weeks are over and I'm itching to get out of Dodge! Ooh - Wyoming is seriously cool . . .

That does sound like fun - but now? In the winter? :D
Ha, I'll be lucky to get to work today. Yesterday a usual one hour drive took 2 hours :( It was lovely driving in: rain, freezing rain, thunder, lightening, snow and of course sleet  Literally couldn't see the road because the windshield kept freezing up. I kept having to stop in the road to clear off the ice and to see if I was on the road or not, lucky for me not many people were out. Wyoming does sound nice though.....
Well, I really didn't mean now although it sounds like I did and I probably do, LOL.

I mean in the summer sometime when it's warm and sunny and there's no snow or freezing winds and the sheepies can all frolic in the sun and we can sit in the sun and then by the campfire at night.

(My thought process is toast right about now - can you tell?)

Holly, you should stay home today. Tell them I said it was okay!
That is a great idea. It could be a camping/Ikea trip since I really didn't get to shop last time :( And August seems soooooo far away.
We don't have Ikea here - what is that? :?

And Wyoming in the summer sounds great, Jil! :D
I don't have a vacation planned yet for this year. But would this involve sleeping in tents????
It doesn't have to be Wyoming, that's pretty far for everyone, but I really love Wyoming and need to go back soon - so much open space and it's so peaceful. Then there's the Grand Tetons, breath-taking.

Oh, Tammy, you don't know IKEA? It's this huge store with cool stuff that's reasonably priced. My bathroom cabinets came from IKEA and so did all my bookshelves. Fun stuff! The closest one to Detroit is 4 hours away and so we stopped at the Chicago store to shop on the way to SheepieFest.

www.ikea.com
Paula, I like tent camping but not everyone does, so I'm up for suggestions. Maybe we could find a place with cabins & tent sites!

Hmmm, with Boo in the family now I think I'm gonna need a bigger tent.
I know! You can all come and camp by me! We have a gorgeous state park/wildlife reserve by my house here in MN... And that is smack dab in the middle of the country (ok, north but still middle!!!!!!) Then I can meet everybody, we can barbecue, go walk the sheepies by the river, shop in my cute historic downtown... it'd be great! :)

Oh yeah, and there's an IKEA not 25 minutes from me...
There’s an IKEA store about 20 minutes away from where I live, and we have beautiful camping opportunities here in the summer, and we have cabins and tent sites. So what are you waiting for?? :rimshot: :clappurple: :clappurple: and it's not sooo far away :D :D
Nicely done, Ann! :clappurple:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

NOT ME!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unless maybe the camp ground is the HYATT REGENCY!
Oh man! I got trumped by Norway... Hastings cannot compete with Norway!
Norway sounds great - but definitely in the SUMMER TIME!!!

Ikea looks very FUN! It took me all of about 30 seconds to find a book shelf I want on the website!
Here's the dilemma -

Hastings - within driving distance
Norway - well, it's NORWAY

Hasting / Norway / Hastings / Norway . . . .
Tammy - IKEA is FUN! I have the Billy bookshelves - some with glass doors - and they look fantastic! I added CD shelves on the side and I must say I'm impressed with what I have for the money I spent.

I wonder if Norway is a stop on any of the cruise trips . . .
THOSE are the ones I liked Jil! How funny!! :D

I NEED bookshelves, too. I want huge ones so I don't run out of room anytime soon. :D
I'm with Ginny - my days of camping are LONG gone. When I go on vacation, I want my creature comforts - a real bed in an air conditioned room, indoor plumbing, and hot and cold running water in a bathroom whose lights don't invite bugs to fly around it! But that's just me . . .
Chris
I lean heavily in that direction myself, Chris. But, every now & then I still like to go on a camping trip. Keeps me young! :D
My idea of camping is when they dont put a mint on the pillow...... 8O
We have al lot of cruise ship coming to my town during the summer, and it’s about 8 hours whit plane from new York, use a car or a ship or a plane what is the different??? And besides, all the films we see fro USA the roads you have is longer than Norway so you are used to drive fare ……….8O

But when you by something from IKEA you can be sure that you are missing some screws…

Or end up with an extra 3 screws!
Here's a lovely place in Wyoming that has cabins and running water, is dog friendly, and is close to Yellowstone. I have friends who went last year with their two dogs (chocolate lab and golden retriever) and they had a blast. We're thinking about going in June 2007 because I've always wanted to see Yellowstone.

I'm with you Darcy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe Harrison Ford will let us stay at his place in Wyoming... :D
Sue - THAT is why I love Wyoming!

I had a campsite in Jackson Hole that was on the corner of a creek and a river. It was wonderful.
How about white water rafting down the Snake River? Can you imagine the looks with all the dogs  We can visit every Ikea along the way and then hop a ship somewhere and sail off to Norway.

I'm with you and Darcy.
hmm... I'd say those who don't wanna camp could come stay with us, but we only have 1 guest bedroom... I could probably manage breakfast in bed for the lucky person though!!! And you could play with the puppy

Can you tell I'd really like to have a MN sheepie gathering this summer???

Sigh...
Karen, what's the name of that state park that's near your house?
Hmm... I'll have to look to get the name(s)... Being by the mississippi we have lots of parks and wildlife reserves around me. I know Lebanon Hills is one, that is about 10 miles away, and is also right by the MN zoo... i'm pretty sure they have campsites there, as that's where the boy and girl scouts go camping. There's the black dog wildlife preserve just up the river from me... I'll look on the state's website to see which ones offer campsites!
Ah hah! Here's is the list of inns and the state park (afton) and regional park (st croix bluffs) that are actually in my home town

To find out about more state and regional parks in MN, try www.exploremn.com. Hastings is in the "Twin Cities" area... We actually sit right on the river, on the border between MN and WI.

If anyone does decide to take a road trip out to MN, please, please let me know, as I'd love to have you over for a barbecue/sheepie play date :)
St Croix Bluffs Regional Park is out - they say no pets allowed. Karen, you must never, ever go there for any reason.
 what about afton or lebanon? When you look at the map on that website we're kinda on the south eastern part, wher the river makes a little V in the border...

Oh, just mapquest Hastings MN! that's probably easier to see than my trying to describe it
Maybe we could convince Ron and Joan into joining us, they could bring the Happie Camper :D It DID look pretty lonely all covered in snow :(

A cross country OES.org sheepie tour perhaps??? :go:
The Happie Camper actually inspired this idea, so Ron, Joan & Mulligan HAVE to join us!
I love camping! We already have a trip planned for the Ozarks in April. :)
April? Around here even camping in June is pushing it.

Maybe we should head south - then we can go earlier!

We go every April with our inlaws. It's pretty good weather most of the time, there was on year where we were in the 40s.

Yesterday it was 70 at 10 pm last night, lol It's in the 40s today and we're supposed to have an ice storm tomorrow... No wonder everyone is sick!
I wonder what Charleston, WV is like in June?

I've never been and it looks interesting.

I wonder if there are sidewalk cafes that allow dogs.
I'm not a fan of West Virginia! They gave us a speeding ticket when driving through. It doesn't seem like the kind of state that would have dog friendly sidewalk cafes, but I could be wrong...It's probably very pretty there in June.

I drove across country in June one year, from Maine to Southern California and I think that pretty much anywhere that time of year will be good. Maine was still a little chilly...
Ok,

So both Afton and Lebanon DO allow dogs, and there are 2 bed and breakfasts in town for you non-campers... so now NONE of you have any excuse not to come over and see me and the new puppy... EXCEPT for the long drive of course

Karen :)
Hate to sound dumb but Afton and Lebanon.........om what state?????
Minnesota... We like to pick recognizable names from OTHER states, and use them in naming our recreational areas just to confuse people

AHHHHHHHHHHHH

Is it true that Minnesota is the ONLY state where people ACTUALLY understand and REALLY play the sport of Curling? We've been watching the Olympics and this year it's Doug's goal to "figure it out"!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well... from what I've been given to understand, the women's curling team are ALL from MN. I'm not sure if we're the only state where curling occurs, but the sport seems to have it's headquarters in a small northern MN town called Bemidji. My sister worked with a gal from there, and apparently almost EVERYONE in that town does curling! I've never tried it myself... But then I don't like the cold  and I'm not very sporty  so that's a bad combo for me... Even if it does only involve brooms and a big flat rock look a like thingy.
I dont understand why curling is considered a sport, let alone even try to understand the actual game 8O
They debated curling on TV this evening, and they come to the conclusion that it was the perfect Olympic game, because you could join all the partying in the Olympic town, and still be able to play the game all thou you had a really bad hangover, they has a rock to lean on ..............
OMG Hastings, MN is 17 hours away! I could be to MI and back in that time.

Maybe we could all meet up in Lebanon, PA. There's a rockin' cool campground about halfway between Chris and I. It's very 60's, sort of like the one in Dirty Dancing. There's a lodge for the wussy people, cabins for the middle ground people and tent areas for the hardcore. I'll have to look and see if there's space for the Happie Camper.

Don't waste all your travel energy people. We still have the Philly picnic, the west coast sheepiefest, WI sheepiefest and the thing in the Carolinas. (Don't remember the name. ) Oh and the National in Virginia. I need a nap, it makes me tired just thinking about all that travel. I need my own plane!
Mandy, how did you know I always wanted to go to a place like in Dirty Dancing, LOL?!?

Is Lebanon part of the Poconos? I took Kayli camping in the Poconos the year after my divorce and we had a lot of fun.

My friend who lived in West Chester at the time met us there for the last weekend and after we packed up and said our goodbyes I couldn't find Kayli. I swear I put her in the car and since it was packed to the gills, the only space for her was on the passenger seat. I started to freak out and then I saw her, in the back, on top of all the camping gear. I had thrown the open sleeping bag over everything and she crawled up there and made herself comfy in the foot of room between all the stuff and the ceiling!
Nope, not part of the Poconos but there are some great 50's style lodges in the Poconos that I have wanted to go to. Those could be an option. (Maybe we could even drag Chris out. At least we know all the sheepdogs would be protected with Drezzie's Dad there!

Another option perchance, the Poconos? Wonder how many sheepdogs we could get into one of those heart shaped hot tubs?
Well, you know I'm always up for something 50's - just my cup of tea!
I lived in northern ME for several years in the late 60's/ early 70's when my ex was in the service and curling was always on TV. As there wasn't the selectin of channels there is now, I did get to understand the fundamentals of the game (this is from a person that doesn't watch football or hockey) but must admit, I haven't seen much of it since then except the Olympics.
I have a colleague from Washington State that is in a curling league. But she's from Canada, so I figured curling was way bigger in Canada than in the US. Is this true?
