Aw, she has the sweetest face. I hope she goes to a great home. |
This little girl came into the shelter matted so badly her coat came off in one piece like a sheep.. The shelter staff loved her and found the OLd English Sheepdog Club of Central Florida to rescue her.
The shelter named her Gretchen ( she can be renamed) and started her on antibiotics for an ear infection and a skin infection. She is now thriving in her foster home and really would love to be in a forever home.... Marie in Ocala, FL |
Gretchen is still available -- she is very sweet...

Just a note for all of you out there that have never adopted a senior dog.
We had the privilege to adopt our Katy at 12 years old - everyone thought we were crazy when we did. The shelter even discounted the poor old dear. Yes, it is hard and yes they might not be with you a long time but they bring a special joy that you just can't imagine to you. At first, I was afraid of getting overly attached to a 12 year old, overweight (she looked like a sow), almost blind dog. But a good diet and some medication for an undiagnosed thyroid problem and we had two wonderful years with her. I would not trade one day that I had with her. When she crossed the bridge it was terrible for me. But as the vet told me we gave her two great years of comfort, love and dignity and she gave us her love - we got the good end of that bargain. Having Katy taught us how to love sheepies even more than we did before. We adopted the little Nikki (6 year old) shortly after her death and I always tell him that Katy sent him to me to heal my broken heart! She is still with us a little even now through him. So I urge anyone who can to consider a senior dog. Linda |
Gretchen is still in foster care and still needs a forever home..
Her foster Dad wrote to me yesterday. I " I thinks she would get along with a puppy with no problem. She has never had any problems with Winston, my 5-year old OES. She is on the small side, and is somewhat more delicate than a big dog, but I don't think she is too delicate. Gretchen eats well and doesn't have any problems with other dogs eating nearby. I live in a two story house, and Gretchen is not real good at going upstairs, but she doesn't mind staying downstairs. She has a very sweet disposition." Please consider liitle Gretchen. Little Gretchen has been in foster care since January! She needs a forever home. Ok, she dosn't see very well, she can't hear very well , and she's not too good on steps, and needs to go potty during the day ( she is house broken) -- she's getting old -- aren't we all? She is very good girl and would love to be in a forever home. Her current foster parents love her and would love to keep her but their other sheepie has decided she doesn't want to share her parent's attention and now they are moving... Please consider adding Gretchen to your family.... she doesn't take up very much space... Marie |
That is so sad Marie Every sheepie deserves a good home, I sure wish I was in a position to take her. |
Gretchen is now in her third foster home -- this time it's my house in Ocala, FL. We have found her a home in the north of Maine -- they really want her but don't think she could safely make the trip as she is. I need to get her healthy enough to make the big trip north.
She really is more blind and deaf than I had imagined and she is as sweet as everyone said -- cuter than can be. Just the tiniest little sheepie girl. I can't believe she was found wandering on a major highway near Tampa -- she is a survivor. Hopefully the vet can get her comfortable so she can truly live out her days being treated like a princess. When I was a young man of 11 or 12, I went to a summer camp and they had a small, very old, blind and deaf dog named Winnie who used to wander around the office... I really loved Winnie, but I never had much time to just sit and pet her. I never let the opportunity pass to do so, however!
I can remember exactly what she looked like, a small grey dog with the very long snout and the very skinny tail, I think she was a Bedlington Terrier. |
I am really glad Gretchen has found a home and I hope her new family gets to meet her soon! |
Gretchen and I just came home from the vet with an amazingly good report!
First of all the vet thinks she is only 5-6 years old (by looking at how her teeth were worn down) he thinks some of her ailments can be easily fixed and she will start looking more like her new younger estimated age. We checked – there was no microchip to be found… After we work on these “easy fixes” we will then see how she is and see if anything “major” is needed. I forgot to take home her report so I’m just going by memory and reading her medicine bottles… For her eyes – She is now on NEOPOLYDEX Solution – 1 -2 drops 3x a day. He did some sort of test on her eyes where he put yellow drops in her eyes – it was done in another room so I did not see or hear what all was going on. I’ll ask more questions at our follow-up visit. For her ears – She is now on OTOMAX – a salve squirted into both ears 2x a day. They cleaned them and said this should help her to be less stinky. For her general health – She is on CEPHALEXAN CAPSULES 2 capsules 2x a day. This will help fight her infection. For her skin -- They gave her a Cortisone shot (to help with the itching) and gave me a bottle of shampoo (BENZOYL-PLUS) to use 1x a week. It needs to stay on her 10-15 minutes each time then rinsed off. They also shaved her neck where she looked really sore and sprayed on BETAGEN – that should also help with the healing. They said it is NOT contagious. That is a project for me to start tomorrow. For her teeth -- They used a tool to pick off hard stuff. A more thorough cleaning was not suggested at this time. They cut her toenails (that might help with her scratching – she was using her rear claws to scratch her skin raw.) They were very long. They took blood to be sent to a lab to test her thyroid. The results should be in few days. He felt many of her symptoms indicated low thyroid – this is an easy inexpensive fix if this is the case. I have had 4 OES tested in the past and 3 out of the 4 needed thyroid medication. It wouldn’t surprise me... He did not feel she needed to be on any medication for arthritis. Her diet is now a food known to work well with allergic dogs. We will use Flint River Ranch Fish and Chips (Trout and Sweet Potato) – My crew already eats it. Her ear and skin problems could be due to allergy. Her weight is good. Probiotic powder was added to her food. (It is especially helpful for dogs on antibiotics) Omega Complex capsules were also added. They should help her skin. I don’t know what Gretchen’s portion of the visit cost because I forgot to take the printout but it wasn’t very high as I already had most of the medications in my “stockpile”. The only products for Gretchen that I had to buy were the eye drops and the shampoo. The total bill for the day came to just $181! This bill also included a huge quantity of Heartworm preventative (he gave it to me in a bulk liquid form that I need to dose out myself (instead of the pre-measured chewables) and Frontline for several months for the 4 dogs. I’ll keep you all updated. My boys here are all being very nice to her. Marie |
What great news! Hopefully she can travel to her forever home soon and have a wonderful new life |
Great news! I hope Gretchen can go to her forever home soon...and live a long life! |
Here's a Gretchen update.... all good news.
Yesterday was bath day -- she stayed in the tub for 15 minutes with the medicated shampoo and a good rinse. She is such a good girl. She is very good for getting her eye drops and only a tiny bit squirmy for her hear medicine. Her blood work results are in -- she does have low thyroid as I had suspected. Her dose of Soloxine is the same as the dose for my 104# male -- she is about half his size! So I was able to start her on the medication immediately. Last evening when it got cooler I walked with her all the way around the perimeter of the house (It's a pretty big house). She was huffing and puffing when we got back in and then she took a good nap. I was quite surprsised this morning at how well she walking as she was exploring the house. I think the exersize is good for her -- her last foster Dad said she had a very small world -- now that she seems to be feeling better she is getting curious and her world is getting much larger. What a good girl she is sitting in the bath so long!
Can't wait to hear more updates on her health improvement. She's a real trooper. |
