ALERT: NASTY VIRUS

For the last 2 days, there has been a nasty virus spreading around the net. If you get anything that looks remotely like this addressed to you, DO NOT open the attachment! Delete the whole thing.

This is what I've received ... yours would have your own ISP's name, for instance, if your email address is foo@bar.com, this message would appear to come from the administrators of bar.com, or the "bar.com team".

Quote:
Dear user of "Oes.org" mailing system,

Your e-mail account has been temporary disabled because of unauthorized access.

For more information see the attached file.

In order to read the attach you have to use the following password: 11476.

Cheers,
The Oes.org team http://www.oes.org

Also, most other viruses "spoof" the return address, meaning that the virus appears to be coming from a legitimate address. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago one virus in particular chose oes.org as it's return address. This was a pain, but we survived the situation.

I just want to assure everybody that oes.org has NEVER sent anyone a virus, and the forum will NEVER send attachments.

Good luck to everyone!
-Ron.

Thanks for the heads up. :D
Ron,
I have several different computers and e-mail providers.
The only one receiving these viruses is the one receiving the OES-L digests. I have not received one virus on any of my other providers, yet I am getting up to 4 a day on that one.
Are you sure the lists list of members has not been grabbed up by someone's infected computer?
If anyone who does not belong to the List has been receiving virus/worm attached e-mails, please let me know. I have contacted every one of the FROM e-mail addresses and asked the same question, do you belong to any list.
So far no answers. It is surprising where the addresses end up coming from, so far I have not known one of them.

I received the same one you have in your examlpe. Be aware that it comes with a ZIPPED attachment that passes through e-mail virus/worm detectors. If you unzip it it will autolaunch, so do not unzip anything without having a virus program running.
Eudora mail users have to delete deleted virus laden messages from their garbage also. There is another step but I forgot what it was ... anyone else know?
Also, has everyone ran a virus/worm detection program on their computers? If not, please do so. Somebody has this self replicating worm and doesn't know it.
Norton AntiVirus scans zippped files, too, so the attachment was deleted before I got to open it.

I just thought that the approach used was a very clever one that might actually catch some usually very cautious people.

This message was not sent to my OESL adddress - it was sent to my oes.org webmaster address.
Hi I have recieved through the OES-L the virus alert.....but I am just over precautious about it...I am just deleting all messeges from the list for now...but yes I`ve seen that heading in one of them.

My husband`s email hasn`t sufferd any virus attack ...although he is hotmail just like me he is not in the list.....
I use Norton and one of the attachments made it through but Norton would not allow it to unzip. I think this is a little too clever.
I am not sure the OES-L was ever virus infected. I think they were just warning us that everyone was getting hit by viruses for the past week or so.
My husband came home saying he had received a lot this last week too. In the paper they said there was a virus war going on between three different names embedded in the virus laden e-mails. The experts think that there's a virus "competition" going on and that most major lists are being attacked. Many big companies were hit hard last week.

Just do not ever click on an attachment from someone you don't know including anything from your provider. Three of the viruses were sent as though they came from my profider. In fact I am not openning any attachment that has not been virus scanned, including photos. Seems things can get infected during transfer from server to server.
These viruses and their sub programs are getting totally too clever for me! I may not like Microsoft's habit of always having a glitch that needs fixing, but actually there is no OS completely glitch free. Wish the virus distributors would just give us a break.
Here's to the last of this computer virus plague!

I don't think that OES=L was ever infected either. What most likely happened is that one (or more) of the 700+ listers got infected, then the virus harvested the email addresses of all the posters, since everybody's actual email address is distributed along with every message that they post.

Norton picked up all thte viruses I received (including zipped ones)

Everyone should ensure to keep their virus definitions up to date!
Ron,
Mine were up to date. In fact they get updated about once a day this last week.
These viruses are adaptive. They take so many different forms and routes I don't think the virus scanners are doing much more than keeping up with them.
I may have a different version of Norton that can only stop a file from being unzipped after the fact. Doesn't matter, it did not allow the attachment to open, so I am happy. My girls have all been instructed about openning attachments. My husband harps on it also. We have also seen a trend for our provider to download two copies of our e-mail lately. I called to see what that was all about and haven't got an answer yet.

I agree with Ron one hundred percent. Everyone needs to put their virus/worm scanners to use. Up-date it and run it with every e-mail if it doesn't do so automatically.
On some of the tech sites they are offering virus scanning programs at reduced rates. I think techdeal.com was offering the basic Norton virus/worm scanner for $12 plus shipping. At any rate, our Wal-Mart had it for $19. And that is cheap peace of mind I guess. Wish I did not feel like it is a bit like extortion, but it is a fact of life. Like having liability insurance for your automobile. We all should be running a virus/worm scanners.
Here's to seeing an end to all of this virus swapping.
