loose stool and sore rectums

we have had Winston now for 3 weeks, when i rescued him , he had diarrhea. I figured it was from the excitement of the move. and it stopped for a few days, stool became harder, but now, we are back to the loose stools!!
What am i doing wrong? The family that had him fed him pedigree dog food , which i am continueing to give him, mixed with half a can of wet pedigree, once a day. He eats it all.!! He also has the occasional dog biscuit. and has a chewie .
Poor dog, i felt bad, yesterday had to cut some fur off his behind cause of the matting from the loose bm. i know his poor butt must be sore!
I read the other posts about diarrhea... ive had other dogs, one other oes, and she never had this problem.
Boy i need some help!!

Have you had a fecal checked? If not take him to the vet or even drop a sample by to have it checked.

You could be talking any number of problems.

If a dog continues to have diarrhea he will eventually become dehydrated and then your going to start with other problems as well.
When I brought Benjamin home I could not give him "treats"...everytime I did..it was like clock work that the would need to go out and yes, it was not pretty 8O . I stopped giving him treats for a few months (I know it was terrible :( ) then I slowly started back again...he is fine now! :D

With my GS...he could not have any canned food, same reason and he never outgrew it.....

See what you can do about changing the feedings.......Sheepies have very sensitive tummys!!
PS....I agree w/ Hannah............a fecal test is a must...you never know..........
I'd also consider stepping him up to a higher quality food. Sometimes that can make a big difference.
We give Barney a spoon of cottage cheese with his food which is supposed to help make stools harder. You could try that...
Many dogs do fine on pedigree... but maybe try a higher quality food? A slow change though so that you don't make it worse....
It sounds like it could be coccidia or giardia. Both do not always show up with just one fecal exam, sometimes it takes looking at stools from 3 or 4 different days under the microscope.
Good luck! :)
Out vet has me put them on rice and chicken or hamberg. Works everytime.
I would cut the canned also. And like they said step up the brand dog food something thats lamb and rice. No corn in it or very little.
I use Pro plan senior chicken and rice.

I second this just to rule out any type of parasite.
Thanks every one for the advice.
I'm personally thinking its too many treats!! The cottage cheese, yes, a friend of my has also suggested that.
and
Yes, we will be going to the Vet!! We, don't know what shots he has had, the family that had him didnt give us that info. So, im flying blind on that one. will definatly take a stool sample when we go.

thanks again guys i appreciate it!

Witchy, here's a page for you:

But definitely have the stools checked by the vet first.
We tried cottage cheese, then yogurt. It may have worked if we had
stuck with it, but I couldn't stand to be around my dogs! The smell was
incredible, and since they sleep slammed up against me, and tend to
pass gas in their sleep I couldn't stand it. Two days was all I could take.
I would get a fecal test and cut back on the treats. My dogs will often
get the runs if I even change chews or the edible bones they love. I
would stop those for a few days if the tests turn up nothing. Could still
be the change in environment too, since it has only been a short while.
Some of these guys are really sensitive so it could be many things, but
rule out medical first.
Good luck!

Shellie
We assume truly he was eating Pedigree. Sometimes that's the first name that comes to people's mind when they don't want you to know they were feeding him something less quality.

Check the expiration date on your Pedigree. I have purchased out of date food from PetsMart. It does go bad.

Stop the canned stuff.

Cut out the treats......there may be something in them setting him off. If you must reward him, use a couple of kibbles.

By all means get the fecal check. Discuss with vet other possible problems such as pancreatitis.

The vet will suggest the rice and ground meat diet for a few days.........then SLOWLY introduce the food back. Sheepies are very senstitive to sudden changes in food and water.
All good advice so far.

Something in this foggy brain of mine remembers a discussion as to what works really well posted on the forum some time back. I remember rice was highly suggested and if memory serves me right, many people claimed canned pumpkin also helped the digestive system. Can anyone remember this advice as I wouldn't want to give the wrong info. Perhaps do a search?

Also if you switch food after checking the fecal sample with the vet, the rule of thumb is slowly add the new food to the old food to prevent stomach upset..1/4 cup to the former food....then 1/2, 3/4 until eventually have all new food in the bowl. It's done gradually over the course of time and not done suddenly. Of course this is supposed to prevent stomach upsets when introducing new food but since Winston is already experiencing this< I'm not sure it would be helpful in your case.

Best wishes Witchy to you and Winston, we're all hoping he's feeling better soon.

Marianne and the boys
Yes Marianne...I remember the discussion on the canned pumpkin as well for this, it is supposed to help...

I know that Gucci, when he was younger went thru a bad bout of the runs, we ran tests and found his liver enzymes were high. We attributed it to the pigs ears we were giving him and have not had the problem again. the vet had put him on Medi-Cal cans...that was honestly a DISASTER! I honestly think it made the runs worse...I really think the canned had alot to do with it.

So I think you should find out what the tests say before doing anything to drastic...and changing food is probably in order but I really recommend sticking to kibble or making your own with any of the reciepes suggested. :D

Good luck and keep us posted!
Tasker is the king of loose stools and it is mostly food related, although often the first sign of an ear infection is diarrhea. But for him food is the key. For most of his life he has been on purina one (or other high quality) lamb and rice. Just recently because of other "allergies" we switched to purina's sensitive system which is salmon and rice. He absolutely cannot tolerate Pedigree. Also, I didn't read all the responses but I have never fed anything but dry food, if his stools are sotf you may want to hold on the canned.
Yes, it's is pumpkin for the fiber. Also Metamucil......about a 1/2 t. to start. Kaopectate too. But first I'd consult the vet--let's rule out parasites.

Then we'll look at food allergies. Friend has a sheeper who can only eat fish and potatoes........no grains at all.

sheepieboss.
Thanks once again!

News is, solid bm! not once but twice, left out the canned dog food. gave him a sirloin burger, cut up in his dry food.

I want to change him over to a better dry food, now, you guys have any suggestions on that?

Oh, yes we are going to vet on wednesday.!! For a general check up.

Id like you all to see my handsome lad, but my picts are all to large, will have to adjust that camera one more time!

thanks again

That's Good News! Did you try any of the recipe I posted?

As to as your photo size issue, just upload the fullsize pics (if you have a good enough connection to the internet) to the photo gallery. It will produce smaller images for you, a thumbnail (perfect to use as an avatar!) and a "normal" version, no bigger than 6 inches in either direction (perfect for linking into posts).
Walter had a problem with diaherra a couple weeks ago. The vet told us the food we were giving him (Authority) didn't have a high enough Fiber content. The problem is we can't just up and switch his food. So, On vet's instructions we've been putting a table spoon of canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling!) and a teaspoon of plain yogurt in his food. We haven't had a problem with it since. We did test it the other day to see what would happen if he didn't have the pumpkin and yogurt, and he went right back to his um "runny" ways.

I didn't think Authority was that bad. The back of the label is comparable to the science diet. Maybe Sheepies just need more fiber?
Pumpkin is a very good natural "diahrrhea cure" for dogs!!! I have used it on smaller dogs but assumed that for a large dog you would need to give to much, interesting to know that that small amount worked!
You will know it's giardia when you see it. The feces looked like they're wrapped in sausage casings and the stool is very loose.

That's an interesting description! How is it possible to be both wrapped-looking and loose at the same time?
Next time I'll save you some  It's VERY gross
Just a picture would be fine, thanks!
Not the same! The smell is part of the package :D

Yes indeed it sure is!!!!!!! The only thing better is a little C-diff thrown in for good measure
We haven't had giardia in years and I can STILL smell it  All 4 had it so it was quite aromatic :)
