I think "the rule" should be whatever looks best with your face. :)

I hate that many many men think "all women should have long hair." I think MOST of the guys I've met (18-30) think this. It's the guys who are married or have dated a girl for a long period of time that know... not everyone looks GOOD with long hair. If you have a long face or forehead (like myself)... long hair drags your face out.

I do think you can be too old for LONG hair, but I don't see many older people with very long hair.
When I was younger I had looooong straight hair (My mom would not let me cut it  ) When I hit my teens I permed it, I really liked it! (I have been w/ my Hubby since I was 16 :) ).....After my first baby, I straightened it and cut it to my shoulders ( I was scared and so was my hubby....it was all we ever knew), then it went shorter and shorter and shorter until I had a Bob (like ummm Sienna Millers new do! 8O ) my husband about died when I came home! He LOVED it! :D since then I have grown it out and cut it off now, I am going back to the "Bob", hubby likes it best and well....so do I!

I think that whatever age you are it doesn't matter as long as you "own" it and feel good about yourself!! Audrey Hepburn always had long hair! and they say that "old" women should have short hair!!

I know alot of women that want to go short, but are afraid of what the men will think.......I am one of the blessed ones to have a hubby who loves me regardless but even more so with it short!!

So....I know...Breath Rebecca Breath :D but that's my story!!
Intersting topic.Being a nurse I have seen thousands of differnt ladies w/ ALL sorts of hair types.Short seems too look the best, because yes theres a medical reason..hehe!!I have seen older too elderly(55-on up) w/ long hair, and it just looks wrong usually very thin, and weighed down looking.the medical reason is the majority of ageing ladies at some point go on medication high blood pressue, hormones, blood thiners,etc...that just is no good for hair.I took care of this one lady who wasnt too old she was 47yrs,and she had long hair that was grey and it was falling out,it was aweful!!Washing it the hair would come out in handsful!! 8O .Id ask her why not cut your hair? She just said she always had it long.

Now for me growing up in Miami I always had long, thick, dark hair going out on the ocean Id put it in pony tails or do something cute w/ it.When we moved too the tundra of Mn I had it long (i was 25yrs),and it was good til winter!! 8O My hair freaked out!!!It got so dry no matter what I put in it.So i cut it too about my shoulders, now Im 36yrs and I still like it too my shoulders. My Aunt and other ladies in their late 50's I know have short hair, like short as in boy short. My BF's mom has always had hers short but she always curls it,and does pooooffy things w/ it.Im sure once I hit my 50's off w/ the hair and make it short.Seems like a rule???LOL!!
Personally..Mommy 2...I think shoulder legnth is perfect for your age and bone structure....you can still wear it up, but you look mature and elegant with it down!!!

dont ask me about my hair, because im now growing it out after lisa made me cut it all off......mine goes up and down like a yo-yo...but i believe you always need the pony-availablity!
Oh I could go on forever about this topic....
I always wanted long hair as a kid, my mother made me keep it short because I was a tomboy and wouldn't do anything "pretty" with it. Anyway, at about ten years or so I started growing it out, and kept it very long for many years. I think I was 23 or 24 when I decided to cut it all off. I loved it short, but I was thinner then and it looked ok on me. I grew it out again, and now it is long, but I cut it to just below my shoulders every couple of years. Now I am soooo sick of it, it's not as thick as it used to be, and since having kids it's kind of like sheepdog hair, not curly, not straight, kind of coarse. I hate it.
I'm afraid to go short again though because I'm heavier now and I worry it will make me look fatter.
So right now I am trying to decide whether to get a loose perm, just so I can mousse it and go and not always have to have it up in a pony tail that gives me headaches.... OR.... cut it all off again. 8O
Mine was really long, now being over 21!!!!!!! 8) LOL, it's just below the shoulders in length and I like it this way. Still can have a ponytail which I love too, Yep get lazy, too much grooming of the girls then wonder why I have the can't be bothered with my own hair, so lazy way out the "good Ol ponytail." Shoulder length is nice as you have a choice of either up or down depending on the mood
I go back and forth. I'm really just a hair farm because I grow my hair long so that I can donate it to Locks of Love and then I chop it way, way, way off, super short. I live with it that way for a while, trying different short cuts and then start the cycle all over again.
It does always seem that while I have long hair (and it is super long right now!) that I want it gone. But once I do cut it off, I'm sad and want it back and all you see everywhere are women with long gorgeous hair. It's like going through a breakup and all you hear on the radio are love songs!
I have what I guess you would call long hair (over half way down my back) at age 39. I have worn my hair long most of my life. My Dad always fussed when I would get it cut, I didn't like to hear it. Now my hubby says that when I am ready for a divorce I don't have to ask for one, just get my hair cut. :? I guess I am fairly lucky, as I can blow it dry and hot roll it straight or mousse into curls and go. My hair is not either straight or curly, it's just kinda there.
Hmm... good topic!

Let's start at the beginning... I had long hair as a little girl, cut it off in middle school after the dreaded L*** (it's a swear word in my book) found their way into my locks... Grr! Then I was teased for about a year being called "Puffy head" because my natural curls got real puffy... geez kids are MEAN! Grew it back out so the Puffy monicker went away. Cut it off again before my senior year when I was travelling in Italy- That was a very cool experience! Nothing like having hair stylists from a completely different country offer you a new do!

I started growing it back out again when I met Mike- so that was my early twenties. My hair is now generaly falling somewhere between the small of my back (at it's longest) and the lower 1/3 of my back. It's up in a ponytail at work most of the time, to keep it out of my eyes. It's in a braid for riding, and down for the rest of the time... But it needs to be restyled, cause the curls are getting yucky at the end, and it doesn't hang nicely when it is down...

When I start having kids it's gonna go back to being short!

I think hair is such a personal thing, it is really difficult to tell someone else what to do. The best thing is to find a really good stylist, whose primary interest is in making YOU look great, and they'll help you choose a flattering style... good luck!
I would say there isn't 'an age' when a woman should do this or that with her hair. Like others have said, I think it depends on how it looks on you. I always thought it was so interesting to see every single grandma with the grandma hair--silver, curls, very short. I think that if shoulder length hair looks good on you when you are 55, there's no need to go grandma-style. Although, I do have to say, I haven't seen very many women 'of age' with hair much longer than shoulders that looks good. Over all it seems thin and brittle to me (it's not the color at all, just the quality of the hair).
Like on all those makeover shows on tv where they have the 40 year old woman who has always had her hair to her butt and it just doesn't look good and she's like, I'll never cut it! And then she does and it looks fabulous!
I have most always had fairly short hair (from 9th grade on) and I think it is what flatters me most. I have fine, thin hair so it doesn't do too much and the shorter lengths gives it volume. Last year I decided to grow my hair for my wedding because I wanted to wear it up. By the time of my wedding it was pretty long, but it just didn't suit me, so two days after my wedding, off it went. I always want long hair--but when I imagine it on me, it is thick and rich...ain't gonna happen.

And remember...hair grows! And...I can't believe there are men out there who seriously wouldn't let their girlfriends/wives cut their hair or say they weren't pretty anymore. I can see them joking about it, saying long hair is sexier...but to be serious...wow.
My girlfriends always tease me saying that every time they see me my hair is different. It's true, though, I do change it a lot. It's long, curly, straight, short, blonde, brunette or red at various times. I'm fortunate to have hair that you can do anything with and it basically works. Now...if I just knew how to do it myself that'd be great! :D
Just heard on the ABC SUNDAY MORNING SHOW that the "NO LONG HAIR OVER 40" rule is a thing of the past. It's now OK to have long hair at what ever age. Which is a good thing since I'm WAY OVER 40 and my hair is to the middle of my back and that is where I intend to keep it!!!!!!! I am one of those tragic people who has had the same hairstyle (no imagination) since high school. At my funeral they will say, "if she'd only done something with her hair"!!!!!!!!!

I had a couple of ex-boyfriends that said that.
My Mom threated to leave my Dad is he ever goes bald. I don't get her. She had gorgeous long hair, got married, got pregnant with me then cut all her hair off. Mom has had a very manlike cut for years. We all HATE her hair....
We are no longer allowed to make fun of her for it. At least she no longer perms it. That looked pretty bad too.

I look awful with short hair.....doesn't suit me well at all.
I keep my hair a little of shoulder length to midway down my back.
It's funny the shorter my hair is the younger people think I am, not young good, but young like a kid 8O
My hair is somewhat thin so I have it layered from the bottom of my chin to the end of the hair, creates lots of volume and and makes my wavy hair curly. I just cut 4 inches off last month. It's still almost to the middle of my back.
i've had mid length hair my whole life (mid length for a dude anyway), but recently discovered the pleasure and money saving of shaving my head....not totally, but really close.

back to topic i've always been a fan of longer hair, in my experiences, women with short hair are either nurses, not interested in men, or both.....

Perfect topic!! I have been fighting with myself back and forth.
My hair right now is all long (no bangs) and long enough to sit on. My hair
grows SO fast, you wouldn't even believe it. I have Vic cut off about
a foot or so every year for the last 4 years. I had it very short about
11 years ago when my oldest son turned 2, and now my youngest
son is 2 1/2 so it is time again. It is very very thick too so it takes
litterally days to dry, since I don't use a dryer. When I was pregnant
the first time, it started getting real wavy, and had been very straight
before that and now after the second baby it is getting corkscrew curly.
Now with the weight of my hair pulling out the curl, I don't really know
how curly it will be when (notice I didn't say IF) I get it cut. I am
really in a quandry over it this time. I WILL not spend time drying or
curling or styling it - I know me, I just won't. So I am guessing I
need to go pretty short just for ease of care.

Is there anywhere online (links anyone??) that I can look at some
styles?? I have actually stopped at some salons to ask questions, but
that is always a bust. They ALL want to cut my hair, but none seem
to be able to give me answers or suggestions! I have threatened
several times to do like Demi in GI Jane and shave it all off. I couldn't
care less how other people think it looks, accept Vic of course. Even he
says its time now. I think when I was vacuuming and bent down to
pick up a sock and the roller caught my hair and pulled my down is
what did it for him. There I was, half on the floor screaming for help!
It was pretty funny actually, guess you had to be there.

I am tired of braiding it, tired of the enormous amounts of shampoo,
tired of it always being damp, tired of ponytails, just tired of it.

What do you all think of Jaime Lee Curtis's short do?? I was considering
that cut.

Open to suggestions!!

I think when your hair begins to thin, and it is still long it is time to
get it shorter. I think some who women who have more grey than not
and let it hang loose and long, look older. The cut sort of needs to
fit your face, or it looks like someone else's hair on your head.
Just my thoughts though.

Shellie
Ed you are such a guy! I am not a nurse but a Paralegal and I LOVE men!!!! We are not talking BOY hair cuts, but flattering girl ones :D

Silly!

Love your humor though!!!

EXCUSE ME

I happen to be a NURSE, I have LONG HAIR and I LOVE MEN
You just slipped on my list Eddie boy
ED, ED, ED... Hair length does not a libido make, at least when it comes to women. When I met my hubby, I had short hair (was not, am not, will never be a nurse  ) - it was never past my shoulders... and that did not seem to deter the... romance. I grew it out because I like it long, but Mike appreciates it too... Except the part where he is constantly removing long hairs from the couch, his clothes, his car, etc. etc. Then he doesn't like my long hair so much!!!
do you have short hair?

the comment wasn't an insult, an observation.
Freaky. I've been thinking about cutting my hair this week. Its past my shoulders and its starting to drive me nuts. In high school I had hair down my back and I cut it like Demi Moore in Ghost. My Father Freaked.
HE loves long hair. I was born with tons of hair and my mom never cut it, (I had natural ringlets) well when I was 2 (4 months before my Aunt's Wedding & I was flowergirl) my Bro was mad at her one night and he played barber with me with Pinking Shears. My parents were not very happy with him, I had 3 strips of hair and no bangs. I don't thin k he could sit down for a few day.

I agree with Darcy though, it has to be able to fit in a pony still.

i'm thinking MY length is short, not shoulder length..

basically a boy cut.
No, I have to admit, I never had super duper short hair... Pixy cuts (I think that is what they call those very short cuts) don't work with curls. When I went to Italy, and had it cut, it was probably to the middle of my neck, below my ears, but with curls, you almost have to have a fuller bodied style...

My sister had a pixy cut when she was little (like 9-10), but it wasn't super flattering... again- interference from the naturally curly hair.

I guess when you've lived 75% of you life with hair down the middle of your back, any cut above your shoulders is considered "short"
I swear the best thing is having an identical twin sister...Lisa got her hair cut short like demi moore in ghost...I saw it and said..."eww no way"
^^^

I've had my hair that short many times. I really think I look best when my hair is a tad longer than that length. The only reason why my hair isn't that way now is because I can't find/trust a good stylist.
Okay, I have to tell you guy this story. I wear my hair curly most day (I'm lazy in the morning) and when I go out I straighten it. While on Saturday I straightened it and it was driving me nuts. So I called Paul at work and asked him if he would be mad if I cut my hair. Wholy #&$), did not expect the response I got. "Go ahead, do what you want but just don't do that". When he got home I was talking to him about it again. Nope, no cut. Ed maybe you can tell me, what is with you men and long hair? You are not the ones that have to do it. I know Paul's right, I would be crying within 2 days of cutting it but why do they love long hair?
I dont get it either....They like the long hair, yet they complain that its in the drain and your hair is "tickling" them when you sleep to close...Brian says if my hair carried the bubonic plague, we'd all be dead...lol...with him I think its just envy...mine grows back and his doesnt 8O

You can come clean my screen again!!!!!

Yep, no cut, but you're shedding again. When was the last time you clean the bathroom floor? OH wait, thats me bitching at him. Could you please keep your hair on your head and not on the floor. I think he just wants to make sure that one of us has hair on our heads. HA

I get your hair is tickling me, its in the way blah blah blah. Make up tyour freakin mind!!!
