We have a new sheepie

I hadn't anticipated this happening so soon. We had decided a while ago that we would get another baby when we lost Mopsy. We started the search now in anticipation of becoming parents again in the late spring. We went through the OESCA breeder referral as recommended. Two of the breeders had an older puppy available and after careful consideration plus OFA verifications, visits/ conversations with other owners of that breeder's dog and discussions with our vet as well as the breeder's vet, we decided that an older puppy right now would work for us.

Announcing HARRINGTON, aka Harry. He is a six month old male.

We have had him home about 36 hours and he is adjusting much better than I expected. His silly sheepie tendencies are beginning to appear yet he does respond to being reprimanded with a simple firm no, which results in the bad behavior stopping but not him slinking or cowering. He appears to be housebroken and is making strides on the leash as well as learning his name. It is pretty obvious that going bye bye is going to be his thing. So far his socialization skills seem okay with both dogs and people, although I think high pitched female voices disconcert him initially.

One huge question though: Do sheepdogs howl? He did a singing howl when he was left alone yesterday morning and again at 4:30 this morning though only for about 15 minutes when he realized it was futile. I had never heard a sheepdog howl before.

Congratulations on adopting Harry! :clappurple: He's just too adorable!!

It's not too soon after losing Mopsy to be adopting again. When we put our Buford down, we had Farley within 2 months, and when we put Farley down, we had Drezzie within 3 days. At first I felt guilty because I thought it was an insult to the memory of the prior dog, but now I really think it helps the healing process, too.

And yes, I've heard Drezzie howl. Not from loneliness or sadness, but from the doorbell ringing. Hysterical!

Good luck with Harry, and be sure to post more pictures real soon!

Chris
Congratulations! He is handsome!!!

When we first go Benjamin and we would leave the house, we could hear him howling so, we ended up putting our other dog in w/ him and the howling stopped.....now he only howls when our alarm goes off in the morning! SILLY!
Congratulations.. he is very handsome.

According to my neighbors.. sheepdogs do howl....(hehehe), epecially in the first few minutes after we leave for work.. then he settles down.
Harry looks very cute .

Mitch howls when we leave him alone but when we leave him with another dog in the house he is fine.
Panda only howls when the beagel behind us starts...then Panda, then Jack the poodle next door chimes in....Oh American Idol..I have a group for you!
Oh he's so cute! It's okay to get another pooch. I like to think that our sheepies leave this world to make room for one more to be loved! I try not to think about this too much as Annie will be 9 this year.

Now that I think about it, I don't think I've heard Anhie howl
Congrats on Harry! :D He is very handsome! :D

The Gooch howled when he was just a wee baby...it was the first day I went to work and left him by himself! I came home to his wee little furry self, up against the wall, just crying and crying...I have no idea how long he was doing that for! 8O He was just 8 weeks old! I also didn't know he was deaf yet and scared him pretty badly when I came up behind him to hug him! 8O It was a tragic day for all!

Since that wretched day, the only time he does it, is when he is being bathed, or as I recently found out...when I am! 8O I decided to have a nice, relaxing jaccuzi and thought it would be nice to have my sheepies with me too! :?: Exactly what was I thinking? The Gooch kept putting his big face right up to mine, with his eyes big as saucers and get this....his mouth went into the shape of a lifesavor...I SWEAR!!!! :D Then wooooooooooooooooooooo! He didn't throw his head back...just stared at me with his lifesavor mouth!   I decided not to turn the jets on as I had seen enough! I had no idea what effect the vibrations and bubbles would do to my baby...so my relaxing bath was cut short! Though I had a much needed belly laugh!

Murphy just laid on the floor and stared at us both like we were nuts...he does that alot!
congrats on your new addiction....

...uh...i mean addition ;)
Congratualtions! He's beautiful! :)
Congrats on Harry! He's just a doll!!!! I want more pics please :)
oh WOW he is so cute!!! welcome Harry!!!
When we had Kassie she would howel at fire sirens, or anything high pitched.

Fergie did only once, when she was being dried after her bath, it was at the groomers. she didn't like the dryers, I had my hubby get her out. poor baby.

we could get flannigan to howel if we told him to sing. it is so funny :)
Yay! Welcome Sir Harrington!!

Yes, I had a sheepdog that howled during the "Happy Birthday Song" and on command!

I was told it was very unusual. I've had 2 since and could not train either to howl.... yet.

Although I have managed to train Mulligan to both speak and growl on command (usually! )
He's AWESOME - sounds like a perfect match for the family! I think he will be a great help in the healing process, too!! Congrats! :D
It's great that you brought Harry into your home-- he's adorable! 6 months is a great age, especially for training. Much better attention span!
Congrats on your new addition. Regarding howling: Frank kind of does a RooRooRoo which kind of sounds like howling but he only does it when he's really happy.
Harrington is just such a cutie, he looks like a great fluff ball of fun.
Congratulations!! Look forward to hearing about him. :D

As far as howling I have one that makes the most unusual noises, we have decided that she is talking LOL. She is not a barker but boy when she gets going with her yoddleing I think that is worse, ear plugs needed
A 6 month old is a great addition! Congrats!

Carl howls, mostly to music. He doesn't do it when horns play but he does it when my husband plays the drums and he accompanies the singing sheepdog by howling.
There was also an OES at the National that howled during Best of Breed. Dead silent and then all of a sudden this big, long, eerie howl. Very funny!
Congratulations on your new puppy!! He's very handsome and I can't wait to see more pictures and hear all about his silliness! :D
   Congratulations on Harrington! Both Toby and Bentley (of blessed memory) howled when they heard fire engines on TV on in the real world! I dopted Bentley within a week of losing Toby as the only way i could stop crying at his loss. I found Willoughby when I knew that Bentley needed to leave for much the same reason. Both Toby and Bentley are now referred to in converstation with Willoughby as his uncles. For example, i may say:"Uncle Bentley always loved this walk" and I swear that Willoughby understands.
Hi Lynda! Good seeing you in the forum again! Missed you! Now back to the topic:

Sheepie Mommy - Awwww Harry is just adorable and I agree that while a beloved pet is irreplaceable, opening up your heart and home to another is the best healing process. I'm so happy that you have Harry in your household and what a cutie he is. I can't wait to see more photos and hear of his upcoming adventures! Congrats!

Marianne and the boys
Thanks,Marianne! Life is complicated which is why you need a sheepie to keep you grounded! Will be in touch! Meantime, Willoughby says he likes the looks of Harry. One of these days when i can figure out how to post pictures  Harry can get a look at him! :)
Cutecutecute. I love the name Harrington. Perfect for a sheepie. And you're not "replacing" Mopsy. You have a lot of love in your heart and need to share it with a sheepie.
