Am I suppsoed to attach a copy of the 1098 form (mortgage interest statement)? I do not see a little arrow saying "attach form here" like there is for the W2s. Is the IRS actually trusting me to report the correct amount????? |

Shockingly - yes, they do! |
Tammy is right
They trust you...that is until they decided that maybe they don't |
The funny thing is, in some cases, they "trust" you to put the number in when it would be a lot easier to just give the proof and save a lot of trouble. For the last 2 years, the state of Michigan refuses to believe how much I pay in taxes so they short my refund. So, for 2 years, I've had to write a letter sending them copies of the assessment and tax statements. And for 2 years, they've refunded only part of what they've owed me between 9 and 10 months later. I expect this year to be no different.
Sorry, I had to rant about that for a second. |
The bank reports the interest to the IRS so they have a way to "check up". Big Brother has BIG COMPUTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Tasker's Mom wrote: The bank reports the interest to the IRS so they have a way to "check up". And they DO.
One of the things that they're really good at catching is descrepencies between your return and 1099/1098/W2 forms. |
We accidentally didn't pay taxes on a distribution from my husband's dad's estate last year and we got a nice bill from the IRS for $788. |
Well at least they were nice about it! I think they should have to send you information like that in singing telegram form or maybe in a flower delivery. Soften the blow a bit. |
Mandy -you crack me up! |
Taxes went in the mail this morning. Fingers crossed that I did them right! |
I will keep my fingers crossed for you |
