Allergies? Help!!

Monty went for his follow-up appointment yesterday. He gained 2lbs. - good news!! Unfortunately, his skin has not improved. The doctor told me that it looks like allergies. The poor thing I just want him better. He gave me a few hand outs to read, but I wanted to see if anyone else has dealt with dog allergies. I know that it can be a long tedious process trying to figure out what the allergy actually is. I am going to do everything it takes to make him better. He also has two ear infections. I noticed on some of the forum topics that yogurt helps keep the infections away. I am going to start doing that. Do you give them the yogurt daily? And how many times?

Monty does do a lot better with his scratching after he goes to the groomers. He is going again on Monday....and then when his greasiness and increased itching starts coming back I am going to bathe him at home and do the groomer thing every so often (his vet bills are getting costly). I am going to look into the pet insurance websites I found on the forum.

So to recap, he is now on ear infection medicine, I will start with the yogurt, he is on cephalexin - a 500MG and a 250MG (for the skin), we are using the fish oil on his food (a squirt out of the bottle), and we are starting to mix his food with a prescription food (to see if its a food allergy), and that is Hill's K9 duck and potato dog food (which he loves). Oh, and he also recommeded to give him Benedryl, just haven't been to the store yet.

He is coming along. His personality has shown immensly these past few weeks. He is finally doing the dog laugh/smile (sticking out their tongue) which has made me so happy. I also got a few kisses too!!! :clappurple:

Any comments or ideas would be appreciated, as well as anymore information on dog allergies.

Hope everyone has a good day! I told a friend of mine in Chicago about Annabelle....I think she may be interested! Keep your fingers crossed!!

Make sure you are using only ceramic or metal food/water bowls.
Your baby looks wonderful! :D I'm so glad he's settling in.

The first thing is to try identify the allergens causing the problem... whether it's a food or environmental allergy. You can do this through trial and error by eliminating specific things that you think are causing the reaction... this is what we did while awaiting blood test results and the mixing of the serum (one of our dogs has been getting allergy shots since September 2005). Unfortunately, we were way off on our guesses.

A RAST blood test is good to identify environmental allergens like mold, dust mites, grasses, etc. but is not very accurate for food allergies from what I've been told. Do they do skin tests on dogs?

Anyway, identifying the triggers for his allergies so you can lessen his exposure will help get him on the road to feeling better.
They said I would have to go to a veterinarian dermotologist for the skin tests. We are slowly switching his food to a duck and potato dog food from the vet. He seems to have more of the food allergy symptoms. Do you think I should go a dog dermo right away for the tests?
I guess it depends how bad his sypmtoms are and whether the doctors feel they can pinpoint the cause with the skin test. Allergies are a very frustrating problem so knowing what is causing the reaction can help greatly- either by avoidance or therapy in the form of shots. The thing with shots is they are said to be 60-80% effective but you have to give them for at least 9 months to see any benefit. Avoidance, if possible, is a much better solution IF you can identify the trigger and it's actually possible to avoid it... like with a food allergy.

Darby, our sheepie with allergies that is getting the shots, is allergic to dust mites and molds... the molds are the biggest problem so springtime may be difficult for her again. We can cut down on these but we can't get rid of them entirely.
