Birthdayboy stops behaving

Yes! Finally found a forum entirely dedicated to OES's. And do I ever need it  . I'm the proud owner of the sweetest (and might I say smartest) OES of europe, but he's driving me crazy from time to time now. He's celebrating his first birthday tomorrow (yes, he'll give a party, you bet!) and during the nine months he's been with us now, he has learned quite a lot. He used to obey pretty good, but now suddenly he changes and starts acting the way he wants to. That means: barking and jumping like crazy when I put on my coat to take him for a walk, when I walk with him he kind of drags me forward(my arms are at least an inch longer), and so on. He's been to puppytraining...Is it normal behaviour, considering his age? I hope someone, anyone can help me (and I hope my english is good enough too  ) :?

First of all - welcome to the forum, Dutchy! :D And yes, your English is great! :D

It sounds to me like you have a normal one year old puppy. :D When he starts these behaviours, you must go back to the basics of training and make him work for everything. Nothing in Life is Free approach works wonders.

He's just being a typical adolescent sheepie. He needs to be reminded of the rules. I've got a 14 month old male, too and he's starting to get a little rowdy at times. I've been doing the same things with him. :D Good luck!
Welcome to the forum! You'll love it here and become addicted like many of us! :D Please please post pictures. We live for that!
Welcome to the forum!

Yes, pulling on the lead is normal for a lot of OES. I use a "prong collar" to help control the pulling, and several people on here use the "Gentle Leader" or the "halti leader".

Try searching for those terms here on the forum using the search function.

Good luck, and WELCOME again to the forum!
Thanks for the quick reactions. I really feel welcome here, and I have to admit I'm kind of addicted to this forum already. It's so good to finally read OES stories only. Well, I'll put in my earplugs and go for a walk with my young adolescent  .
Welcome to the forum!!!

Ahhh... Adolescence.... Time for some ear plugs and lot of patience.

When Lennon went trough his stage he challenged me on everything. Wanted to prove that he was worth of being the leader of the pack. Lots of excercise and a crash course on discipline and new tricks helped us get trough that stage. Your dog may get ver difficult but you must give in. Once they get trough that stage they go back to their old fun ways of before.

Good luck!
Welcome to the forum! Your avatar picture of your pup is adorable - can't wait to see more pictures! Your English is great, too!

Welcome to the forum! :)

Is your boy neutered? If not, that would probably help. If he is, even neutered males go through a domineering adolescent phase.... I would simply not give him what he wants. If you put on your coat and he gets too excited to the point of exhibiting unwanted behaviors, I'd make him sit, and not go until he obeys and is calm.
Good luck! I can't wait to hear more about him :) And pics please! :)
Can I relate to this! My youngest, Toby, did the exact same thing. On his first birthday he went totally crazy, no manners, hearing shut down, lost all idea of who was in charge. We went to a show and he was a wild bucking bronco! He pony kicked and bucked around the ring you'd think he had never done it before.
After about a month or two he settled back in. The biggest key is to be consistent during this time. It does go away!

Keep up with the training, it will help. Even repeating puppy class at this point will be beneficial.

Your English is great! I don't think we would have even noticed if you hadn't said anything. Nice work.
Hi everyone! Still here (although it's almost midnight, guess this means we're really addicted now). It's good to read we're not the only ones with this problem and I'm definitely going to try your tricks and suggestions. His behaviour doesn't make us love him less by the way, it's just that it's very annoying when it's late and you go for a walk. You don't want the entire neighbourhood to wake up, do you  ?
We were also thinking of paying a little visit to the vet some day soon, to neuter him. But doesn't that change his personality (that's what lots of people say here)?

O, tried to make an photoalbum, but I'm not really a wizzkid (yet), so I'll figure out how to do that tomorrow.
Welcome Dutchy.

I call it the rotten teenage stage, we all go through it as they mature, just be consistant with him and buy ear plugs
LOl well its good to know that Tuc hasnt completely lost his mind! He turned 1 on the 26th, and has been a holy terror since!

Welcome to the forum Dutchy!
Welcome to the forum Dutchy! :D

Gucci is 1 year and almost 4 months, I have noticed a huge improvement in his attitude lately! But he was driving me a little mad as well! I think they all go thru these stages at the 1 year mark.

Your english is excellent! :D
Hi Dutvhy
They all go thtu these stages at this time.
All breed have the same problem when they come into the teenage stage.

It seams to me that to neuter your dogs all the problem will bee gone.
In scandinavien is this prohibition with law,
and we have no problem with that. :P
Hi Dutchy-

As Ron mentioned, I would also highly recommend the "Gentle Leader" or "Halti". My trainer recommended it and it worked wonders. As Patches got a bit older I stopped using it but now I'm back to using it at age 2.5 and our walks are soooooooooooooo pleasant. It does no harm to them, just keeps them walking right with you.

Good Luck
