I am "helping" my sister throw a shower for her best friend's wedding. Dale is practically a member of the family, I've known her since she was 9. We call her my semi-adopted sister! Anyhow, she's getting married and Christina is throwing a shower. Since Christina lives with us, the shower is at our house, and I'm the cook! Can someone give me some good ideas for fun, girlie shower foods that are vegetarian friendly? She does eat dairy and egg products, just not any kind of meat. I will probably have 1 meat dish for us carnivores- proably a chicken fingersandwich kinda thing. Can you guys give me some fun ideas/recipes? My funnest idea so far is a flower punch bowl, which you make by layering crushed ice and edible flowers between two bowls! I think it is gonna be very froo-froo and fun! Kinda like an ice scuplture for dummies! I'm just not sure how I'm gonna keep it from melting all over the place! Karen |

I always use puff pastry -is phyllo better? |
I think puff pastry and phillo dough result in a similar outcome. I've used both--just depended on what was in my freezer!
Hmmm, I was thinking the cucumber sandwich thing, too, although I'd never heard of the mint jelly part... You could do sauteed mushroom crostini... artichoke dip with crackers and vegetables vegetable lasagna stuffed zucchini all sorts of salads like tabouli or couscous... you could have hummus and pita chips, or a white bean dip |
The difference is..puff pastry well puffs..phyllo dough doesnt..it comes in very thin sheets..each sheet is buttered and layered... |
And is tasty and delicious- kind of more crispy cursty! I LOVE phillo dough recipes- my only problem is it is so delicate, I end up oputting holes init all the time!!! Thanks for all the ideas guys, keep em coming!!! |
Karen, do you have a theme in mind? I know you said girly foods, but would a cucumber sandwich next to chips and salsa not work thematically? Do you want to stick with mostly 'delicate' foods? What time of the day is the shower? |
Here's a cute preentation - get a bunch of Belgian endive and separate the leaves. Make up a Greek salad - olives, Feta cheese, cucumbers, onions, dressing, chopped up small. Spoon the salad into individual endive leaves. Great finger food! I also do this with crab salad but wasn't sure if your bride to be eats seafood. |
Spinach and mushroom turnovers
Baby vegetable antipasto Crepes filled with asparagus and topped with hollandaise sauce Mini cheese/spinach ravioli with chunky tomato sauce Stuffed jalapenos (cream cheese) |
I'm not entirely sure what time of day the shower is going to be, but probably early afternoon. It is going to be the day after my birthday So it looks like I'll be doing some cooking on my birthday! Oh well, at least I enjoy it! And everyone can come over and help me socialize the puppy!!! I'm not sure if Christina has a theme in mind, but I'm going to go with a very traditional girlie food theme- pretty presentations, delicate, finely flavored foods, stuff that makes you feel spoiled to eat! Which means we're definitely going to have to have chocolate of some sort... hmm... All of your ideas sound awesome so far!!! Yummy!!!

ooh im a vegetarian:
here are some appetizer ideas sourdough toasts with fresh mozzerella cheese, tomatoe (seasoned with salt and pepper) and spinach. corn and cheese purses a can of corn (drained) 4oz feta cheese 1 egg (beaten) 2 tablespoons whipping cream 2 tablespoons grated parmesan 3 scallions chopped 8-10 phyllo pastry 8 tablespoon butter, melted ground pepper preheat over to 350 mix corn with feta cheese, stir in the egg, cream, cheese, scallions and pepper... mix well.. then take one sheet of phyllo (cut in half), brush with butter... then drop a dollop of mixture in the middle of the phyllo square then wrap/scrunch it up like a purse (think of holding a paper lunch bag)... brush all of your purses with butter.. and bake for 15 min.. serve warm. |
How about "cigars"......
phyllo dough 16 oz feta cheese 1/2 cup chopped fresh herbs ie...italian parsley, dill, basil and garlic 2 eggs salt and pepper unsalted melted butter take one layer of phylllo brush with butter, add 2nd phyllo to other one, brush with butter...cut the layered phyllo into 6 even rectangles..dab some of the cheese, egg, herb mixture toward the end of a rectangle , tuck sides in and roll up.... continue till all mixture is gone...spread melted butter to the top of each cigar bake at 350 for about 1/2 hour or until turn brown and crisp....serve with crisp dry wine |
Nachos are always good |
What about nuts?
Speaking of phyllo.....what about baklava? Or tiropitas (cheese triangles) or spinache triangles? The last two you can often purchase in the frozen food section of bigger groceries or Whole Foods type places. I did leave out bean ideas as you don't want to bloat the ladies...those who don't eat many beans. |
