New here from Kentucky..with a possible Sheepie mix??

Hi all! I found this forum while doing some research on my new dog..and what breed she may be.

My name is Jaime and my family and I have recently adopted a new dog. We currently have a White Shepherd named Boomer that is a year old...and now a new dog named Lola.

I came across this site doing some research trying to find out what breeds Lola may be. I will post some pics of her in the pic thread, and would love all of your input! What better place to get opinions than from OES owners??

Thanks for reading...and please if you would take a moment to look at the pics in the thread and add your comments I would really appreciate it!

Welcome Jamie, Lola and Boomer, hope you enjoy the forum, your new little girl is just adorable.

Greetings from Australia, Lisa and sheepie girls, Kelsey and Brie.
Welcome to the forum, Jamie! Look forward to hearing all about Lola & Boomer! :D
Welcome, Jaime! I posted in the Pictures thread that I think Lola looks like a beardie mix. She's SO adorable! Thanks so much for rescuing her!

Be prepared to become addicted to this site! All topics covered, and THEN some! You come to "know" everyone and feel like we're just a great BIG extended family.

Good luck with Lola!

Chris
Thanks for the welcome everyone! This is really an awesome site, and just from reading through a few threads, you can see how nice everyone here is....and that you all get along!!!!

Im sure I will be hanging around for tips and advice about grooming !(seeing as how our shepherd only needs a good bath and brushing....the whole grooming thing, and hair cuts, and matting are totally out of our experience)

Thanks again!
Hi Jaime, Boomer and Lola,

Welcome to the forum! Boomer is gorgeous and Lola is so adorable. She looked like pure sheepie to me until I viewed the next photo and could put her size in perspective next to Boomer. She may be a Beardie due to her size and the slight brown in her fur. OES are black and white until the age of six months and then "blow their coats" and it turns grey and white which takes aprox a year for it all to change. The expression "blow their coat" means you find hair much like someone cleaned out a hair brush and dumped it on your floor but not shedding if that makes sense. Not like Boomer would do perhaps as after that OES are not known to "shed". Depends on most sheepies. The brown in the coat may not be an indicator either as some sheepies may have that coloration but that is very rare for their breed. Sheepies are grey and white while Beardies can come in many shades. OES generally don't have tails but that not always 100% of the case and Beardies usually do.

Beardie's (Bearded collies) and Sheepies (Old English Sheepdogs) are very similar in personality. I've heard it said affectionately that Beardies are just like Sheepies with ADD. Both are affectionate and goofy dogs. Beardies have a finer coat than sheepies but unless you had access to both , would be hard for you to compare. Somewhere in this foggy memory of mine a few years ago someone posted a site that compared the two breeds. Perhaps doing a search will bring it up?

Hope that helps a bit and really doesn't matter what Lola is, as she's a welcome addition to this forum as is Boomer. Not just for sheepies as many of the sheepies on here have brothers and sisters that are of other breeds. You'll learn a lot and please share stories of Lola and Boomer. Photos too...we all love photos!

I'm Marianne, mom to two upright boys, 3 dogs, Blue, Merlin and Panda, 4 cats, and a host of other small creatures. Welcome and nice to meet you!

Oh last thing to help with grooming, a visit to the grooming section of the forum really helps. The trick is to do the undercoat as well as once they get matted sometimes it's just easier to have them shaved down and start from scratch. I've had to do this with my rescue but only if the mat(s) is really bad and you can't work it out with your fingers first and then a brush afterwards. When working it out..do it away from the body and not vice versa or you'll find it more tangled the next day. Good luck!
Thank you Marianne and all the others! I had not done too much research on beardies, or sheepies until Lola....and I am loving the breeds! Very cool indeed.

I do understand quite well the term Blowing the coat..even though I know technically he did not 'blow' his coat. He is just one monsterous shedder! I always have hair tumbleweeds somewhere in the kitchen. No matter how well I sweep and mop...one will always escape the broom! But I have seen Pomeranians when they blow their coats (puppy uglies is the very correct term for that!!!)

Lola does not seem to shed much at all. Which I am loving! I do intend to read up in the grooming threads...learning which brushes to use, and what works best, etc.

Thank you all for such a nice welcome to the board! I have really been enjoying everyones picutres! You all have amazing looking dogs!
