How do you move cross country with a sheepie?

Hi.. We are moving from NY to Omaha in may. My sheepie will be 5 1/2 months old. It will take us 3 days and 2 nights ( we have a 2 yr old as well) ... are there hotels that will take us? And if not.. how do you do it?? :?:

You can use www.petfriendly.com to check for hotels along the route you're planning to drive.
My husband is in med school too! And we're going to have to do the cross country drive (hopefully!) next year when he gets his residency. We've decided that we are going to fly Barney because although the flight might be stressful, it'll be faster (he's already flown from california to Virginia once and was fine)...

My friend moved last year from New Hampshire to California and drove with her mom and her lab. They basically just took their time and made sure to stop fairly frequently to pee/poop/water the dog. Under the section Traveling with your Sheepdog toward the bottom of this forum is a thread with a list of dog friendly hotels.
Red Roof Inn has always been good to us.
We used to travel with country with Maudie, what a trooper.

Actually they enjoy the road as long as the car is comfortable and they get out and romp from time to time. Long walks at the motel help.

In several of our household moves we've had the dogs crammed into the car with other stuff, giving each dog just enough room to curl up. They did fine......it's like being in their crates but this time with Mom and Dad along.

Kongs and stuffings help, soothing music for naps.

BUT FIRST OF ALL, get them used to long distance travel. Start with every increasing lengths trips. That way you'll learn if they are prone to car sickness.

One time we were forced into a long distance trip with a Newfoundland we just rescued......we were given a package of hotdogs and a bottle of doggie tranquilizers. LOL, he ate the hotdogs and tranqs without slowing down. I wish we had saved a few pills for us..... Turned out he LOVED car trips.....gosh he was a great dog.
We had a great experience with Marriott Residence Inn. You should check on hotels along the way though, because size limits on dogs and the fees they charge for dogs vary even within a chain.
thank you for the info!! I was worried we'd all be camping in our car for 2 nights.. its a tiny honda accent and with 2 kids, 2 cats and harvey I just can't see that happening!
I echo SheepieBoss' thoughts. We travel from Chicago to Florida every year with our dog, and here's what we did. We acclimated the dog to car travel before the big trek by taking him on car rides of increasing lengths. We also invested in a dog harness, which made him feel more secure, and us as well. (A crate wouldn't fit.)

Our best hotel experience was with a Marriott Residence Inn as well. It's fairly pricy, as they charge a non-refundable cleaning fee ($100 or so) in addition to the cost of the room, but it was clean and truly dog friendly. (I've stayed at a Staybridge Suites and ended up having to walk the dog about 1/2 mile in order to find a plce for him to potty that wasn't concrete!)

Good luck in your travels!

At Sheepiefest we just used the side door of the hotel to get around any possible "setbacks!" But i'm not suggesting this for everyone to do...
