I think I'm a sheepie snob...

I have an embarassing story to share....We were at the pet store on saturday proudly walking Sasha through the store, when we were stopped by two people. One asked if she was a sheepdog which I proudly confirmed, the other was saying "see I told you so!" and of course I had to ask what he was talking about. He told me that his friend thought it was a sheep dog but crossed with something and he was thinking it wasn't. In my mind I thought I was calm and cool in saying nope she's full breed. Much to my surprise when we got to the van and my boyfriend pointed out how I snapped at the poor girl for thinking she was a cross. I must be a snob...I have absolutely nothing against mixed breeds and can't belive I snapped without even realizing it   Just thought I'd share and see if there are any other " oops " moments you guys have had.

LOL...You just pointed out something that I should be more considerate. There is another dog in our neighborhood and they say they adopted their sheepie, Beau, from a shelter in the city a number of years ago. They snapped at me too when I questioned whether or not Beau is a pure bred OES. He sure looks like a Bearded Collie mix to me. It's just the appearance of Beau and Annie are very different (body structure, hair texture, he has a tail). Hey, what do I know...except that I HAVE A PURE BRED SHEEPIE! :D

I do get upset and offended when some kids down the street laugh and say, "Hey, there's the silly tailess dog". Steve gets upset when people call her a "he". You'd think they took away his manhood. I need to let her ear hair grow back just so we can put bows in and make her a girl again! :D
Many....open foot insert whole shoe....dont care to elaborate 8O
It's amazing how defensive we become of our sheepies. I like the bow idea to always show that it's a girl. Seeings how among all the hair there's no point in fancy collars.
What annoys me is when they are clipped and they ask if she is a Poodle or Collie. I am a sheepie snob sometimes.
Ever since I got Maggie people started asking if they were full bred because, well, they look so different (said with heads cocked and doubtful tone). . . People also started calling Chummie "he" and commenting on her girth/heft/substance. I have to force myself to smile pleasantly because I know they don't mean any harm but I am sure anyone who knows me would know I am a bit annoyed (and annoyed at myself for feeling annoyed). . . For the same reason, I've stopped guessing what kind of dogs other people have because they always seem offended if I guess wrong.
Try the bows, Val! Or a hot pink flowery bandana. I forgot, Steve also felt very strongly that I ordered a pink and purple collar for Annie. Her old one was unisex (red, yellow and green). Guaranteed to be a girl if you fou fou her up!
I did get her a pink and orange collar for that very reason! She came with purple, which seems unisex. Bows are next, I guess. . .
or a pink sweater...
Sometimes I think that just because our dogs are large, people just assume they're males. It doesn't enter their minds that large breed dogs can be female, too! My father-in-law does this all the time with Drez, and she's 12 years old! He nearly ALWAYS call her a "he!" Guess that means I should call his little Westie (who is a he - now who ever heard of a small male dog???) a "she", huh?
Chris
There is a guy at my dogpark who has a cute little white poodle that wears a fuzzy pink sweater -- a gift from his mom. The dog is a boy but everyone naturally assumes it is a girl. I've caught myself a couple of times about to call him "she."
I am accustomed to people asking me what Tasker is because since I usually keep him clipped short it is confusing so it doesn't bother me.

100% people would assume this was a female. Unless he's trying to metrosexual...whatever

I get asked what she is, most people are knowing she's a sheepdog, but can't remeber the breed, so I get alot of Mr Muggs (famous book in school, elementary grades 1978ish), or shaggy dog.

Most people I run into, just ask boy or girl? Her coat cover the collar which is purple.

Ziva however, has a big pink collar, with a red heart tag...gets boy all the time. people fall all over themselves when they see her coming to pet her and love her up.

Poor Remy isn't the attention getter anymore. I am getting a little jealous of that too, I want her to be acknowledge too. Does that make me a snob.
All my dogs so far have been full-blooded OES (is that snobby enough for you??) Just worked out that way. People ask all the time "what kind of dog is that?" Some have guessed almost every breed except Golden Retriever and some may have even considered that.

At the beach last summer we were walking Nelson and his sister Emily, who were about five months old at the time. Some girls on a third floor condo balcony yelled down to us: "what kind of dogs are those?". We said "Old English Sheepdogs".
They thought a moment and then asked "Are they from China?":rimshot:

The only panda bears I've seen are at the National Zoo... :bulb:

Sorry, tried to let this one go but just couldn't - did you mean "Open mouth, insert whole shoe"?

Chris
OK I admit I am a sheepie snob big time LOL

We get here "Ooooh look the dulux paint dog", no one knows them as OES everyone calls them the dulux dogs  . Mmmm might be a new breed  And I can't help my self to correct them.

The other thing I hate is the usual questions about them.
How do they see? (HOW DO YOU SEE? )
Do they have eyes under all that hair? (OH DUH!!)
Are they a lot of work? (YEP HEAPS AND HEAPS OF WORK)
Do they eat much? (YEP, EAT YOU OUT OF HOUSE AND HOME)
Is it a boy or girl? (I'LL JUST ROLL THE DOG OVER AND YOU CAN CHECK FOR PLUMBING OR NOT  )

Snob YES and proud of it
Take the time to point out the differences between a sheepdog and beardie. That way when the movie comes out in two months, people will know the movie dog is a beardie, not sheepdog and pester the daylights out of those people!! 8) 8)

Yeah....lol.... that's what I meant too.
because i've kept his hair short, many ask if he's a great dane....silly people.
I was at a dog event somewhere, and some guy asked me if Dudley was a pit-bull mix. I gave him a look that said "No, and get away from me before I pit-bull you". He scurried away before I could open my mouth.

I think some people just don't know, so it becomes important to politely educate them if we are able to. I bought a fun book called "The Dog-a-log" that has almost 400 breed descriptions and pictures in it.

Thinking back on rescues I got from various shelters.........more often than not they called the pure OES, mixes. Granted many were so horrible matted it was hard to tell what they had.

Also, so many terrier or poodle mixes were also called OES mix when nary a sheepdog crossed their paths.

I can think of only a few cases where the shelter actually got it right, OES, nothing more.

Could it be the only OES people see are the show dogs in their buffed and puffed glory and can't imagine what an unpoofed dog looks like?

See thats what I mean

OMG LMAO!!!! It kills me when ppl really think they are THAT clever.
'why yes I am taking my panda bear for a quick stroll before the zoo closes for the night'
I'm beginning to think we have earned the right to be sheepie snobs.

OMG, I just spit my tea out all over my keyboard and screen. I can't believe how dumb some people are. Yep thats my Panda bear, just hanging out, going for a walk. What part of OLD ENGLISH SHEEPDOG did these girls not get??? English = China.

Sheepie snobs we are, cuz the dumb people in the world make us be.

When people ask me Bailey's name, they often assume he is a "she". I guess Bailey is a little girl's name now? Not when I was growing up LOL! Just goes to show how old I am. He's not offended though, as long as he's the center of attention life is good.
Well I guess I have to say I would classify myself a sheepie lover.

When I'm out with Merlin I often have people approach me and toot the merits of having a purebred. Of course I agree! :D

When I'm out with Blue, I often have people approach me about the merits of a mixed breed dog. Of course I agree! :D

When I mention Panda's background I often have people get in conversations with me about how wonderful rescues are. I agree of course! :D

Overall, It's never mattered to me where they come from and if they are a mix...but 4 of my dogs out of the 7 were sheepies and it definately is my favorite breed.

Marianne and the boys
It would be hard to classify us as less that "sheepie nuts"

I don't take any offense when people try tu guess Lennon or Sofa's breed. We've got so many different guesses that all you can do is laugh and tell them naaa... It's an OES. They are very rare in Mexico, and for some reason, everyone ends up telling you they had one JUST LIKE THAT when they were kids, except that it was smaller, or a different color, or less hairy. 8O Too funny!!!

Once you've seen a sheepie it's hard to miss them if you are interested in dogs and you'll know the difference between them and the bearded collies or any other similar breed. I see no point in trying to educate someone who took the time to see your dog and be interested enough to ask you what kind of dog you have instead of making some chit-chat and enjoy the patting and compliments our dogs get.
the giant topknot does nothing to enhanced clyde's manliness. even after i tell people he's a boy and his name is clyde, they continue referring to him as "she."
Jill, maybve you need to find a really manly barette for Clyde, like a race car, or Helicopter. No one is going to mistake him for a girl with a chopper bartette in... right???
I recently saw a picture of a small male dog with a top knot and it was held up by a ponytail holder that was a cowboy hat. Really cute and left no question (to me at least) that it was a boy! If I could remember where I saw it, I'd link it.
Here is my snob story: I got in an arguement, er a debate, with a lady who met both of my dogs (1 full coat - 1 clipped). She proceeded to tell me how her aunt showed & bred OES but only the soft coated kind, not the rough coated. She went on to say how there are 2 types of sheepdog standards, soft coated & rough. I told her she must be confused with Collies as there is only 1 type of coat for the standard. She was very adament with her belief and needless to say I was really trying not to argue with her.

Plus last week when I was walking the dogs around town some guy yells out to me "hey, that's a Benji dog?" 8O

p.s. Saul I really love your avatar!

lol. i think the confusion comes from the sheer size of the ponytail on his head! you can see in the avatar picture, it's a lot of hair up there! These days, i only use the "stay put" elastics from Goody. they have some rubber on the outside and the hair stays up so much longer.

maybe i should put his rambo headband back on him...
I'm actually not a Sheepie snob. I feel almost guilty that I have two full blooded dogs when their are so many dogs in the kennels that need a home. I love all dogs regardless of there pedigree. I do however think good breeding is important for health reasons etc. but I think all dogs are special . I do see how your feelings could have been hurt when you do have a full bred dog and someone thinks its a mix but who cares some people truly just don't know all the dog breeds. My oldest daughter knows every breed of dog that exists. We took our dog to the kennel when we went on vacation and in the next kennel over there were two dogs and my daughter got all excited and she says look Anatoli something retrievers and I'm like what? She knew exactly what breed they were.I still don't know what she said but she knew
