I've had other dogs that would "catch" the popcorn and one that played frisbee and caught them most of the time and I don't remember having a problem getting them to "catch" anything. |

for jack, we started tossing toys to him, then grabing them really quick, if he didn't catch, he lost the toy, only a few times so as not to be mean, but he eventually tought himself how to catch, |
We started with a towel. When it landed on their heads, they would pull it off with their mouths and pretty soon after that they were catching it before it hit their heads. |
Our bearded collie always would catch the popcorn, but Maggie doesn't. She also waits for it to hit her nose and bounce to the floor, then eats it. I think you just have to try a method that works for you...
One way we taught MAggie to catch (which happens about once in every 10 throws! ) is to use a tennis ball and to bounce it on the ground first so it goes up high towards her. The sound of it hitting the ground alerts her that it is coming and she can get ready for it. |
Try using a bigger, soft toy. Clyde's pretty good about catching those midair since it seems to be easy for him to grab. We never taught him. One day he just started diving foor things that we threw for him to fetch so I've been trying to perfect his catching with him now. With a soft toy, he's about 80%-- less if his hair isn't pulled back well. He got knocked in the face too many times with tennis balls and I have this scary feeling he's gonna swallow one because he's got his mouth gaping open, waiting for me to throw! |
