Kennel cough

:) Hi everyone, I'm worried about Willoughby, just 9 months. My work takes me away from home for about a week every few weeks and Willoughby now goes to a local kennel. He loves it as he is well taken care of. I picked him up last Thursday after my latest trip and he seemed his usual cheerful bouncy self. However, next few days he was reluctant to eat which sometimes happens if he eats "junk food" on our walks. He was very restless at night (he sleeps in his crate in my bedroom). He began to have sneezes. He started eating promptly again but is still sneezing and it sounds as if he also has a periodic cough. I called the vet to find out if this could be an attenuated from of kennel cough as he had a vaccination before he went to the kennel initally in October. I was told "maybe" and watch for coloured discharge from eyes or nose.(There isn't any to date: some clear discarge from his nose) My questions is "Has anyone experienced this with a Sheepie and if so, what can you do to make him more comfortable? I haven't taken him to the vet yet. He has plenty of H2O and treats with Eucalytus/parsley in them which he loves. Many thanks.

I havent dealt with kennel cough in a sheepie yet but I have seen several cases at work. A kennel cough is a distinct cough that had a dry hacking sound to it and it is loud but the animal looks healthy otherwise. If he is sneezing it might be something else but it is very possible since he goes to a kennel while you are away. Depending on when the last bordatella vaccination was he could still have gotten it. See with vaccinations, most people give them right before the animal goes to the kennel but in fact the vaccination doesnt elicit an immune responce until several days later, even the booster shots. Better to give the vaccination 2-3 weeks ahead of time to be sure, but anyway, if he does develop a cough or the sneezing gets worse, take him in to the vet because if it isnt kennel cough he might have something stuck up his nose??? Kennel cough is easily treated though so the vet will give you good meds to make him more comfortable and it will be gone within a couple of weeks. Good luck!
Clyde had kennel cough when we first got him and to hear that little cough is one of the saddest things ever! One thing you can do to help break up any congestion is, when he does cough, gently slap your hands on both of his sides, right about where his lungs until he "clears his throat," so to speak. The vet told us to do that with Clyde and it really did help him to get rid of the cough faster-- there was no prolonged hacking. I can't remember if the vet gave us a decongestant or something else (but I do remember him taking medication) and everything cleared up in under a week.
:D Thank you for your replies!I took Willoughby to the Vet yesterday and apparently there is an upper respiratory infection going around that he has seen recently in dogs returning from shows in our area. Willoughby was pronouced healthy but plump! He has a prescription for a combination antibiotic/anti-inflammatory pill : 2 x twice a day in a small peanut butter sandwich. He enjoyed his visit as everyone made a fuss over him. I went to Tim Horton's drive-in for coffee and they gave him a timbit ( small donut like a hush-puppy) adding to his girth! He weighs 55 pounds but he isn't that big. He had a good time but I was exhausted! By the way, after numerous tries, I finally uploaded an avatar: Willoughby in the snow in December in my garden. :D I finally have a password I can remember so I will participate. To date, I've read everything (almost) but haven't been able to reply.
