Open Pyometra

I bred my dog (crossbreed german shepherd/doberman) with a doberman on Dec 9th and everything was going fine until yesterday. She started discharging fluid from her vagina. I brought her to the vet today and he diagnosed her with open pyometra. The veterinarian wants to do surgery. Could open pyometra be treated with a strong antibiotic?

Please help!

Pyometra can be lethal and if your vet wants to spay her then I would not muck around. I had one bitch years ago that was ill and in heat, diagnosed with low grade pyometra, she was on a course of Clavulox (antibiotic) for the whole 21 days only till the heat was over, then on the 21st day emergency spaying, after the saying the vet said her inside was enlarged 3 times bigger then it sould of been, we got her in time before it ruptured!!.
I know there is vets that do treat pyometra with drugs, but spaying is really the only way to go for her well being and saftey.
Sorry about your girl, but please follow your vets advice as it can be fatal if it ruptures.
Do the surgery!!!!!

Pyometra is very serious and while antiobiotics may help temporarily, surgery is the only option.

You're in my thoughts & prayers.

We have had 3 dogs come into rescue with pyometra, and all of them got very ill very quickly and almost died. The surgery is vital, as the dog is being poisoned. For closed pyometra there is no option, but with open the dog often may survive, but her organs may be so deteriorated that other problems can occur as a result of the immense infection. This is serious stuff.
What we are taught at school is that "Don't let the sun set on a pyometra"... ??? because your dog can become ill that quick and die just as fast. Please take her in for surgery ASAP!!!!!
Thank you very much to all of you. I will bring her into the vet in the morning for the surgery. Will let you know the outcome.

Thanks again !
Birgit
It really IS not worth risking her life in the hope of leaving her entire, you ARE doing the right thing for her. Hope the surgery goes well and yes please let us all know that all went OK.
Best wishes to you and your girl
I think you are making a wise choice. However, assuming a bitch is successfully treated with antibiotics and hormones, the likelyhood of pyometra occuring with the next breeding is very high.
I have a yorkie, she is 4 yrs old, recently I noticed that she was having a discharge. At first I thought that it could be an yeast infection, I researched it and symptomes were very similar. After I called my vat he said that based on the color of the discharge (yelowish-white) it is an open pyometra. However, she wasn't in heat recently and except for discharge has no symptoms of being sick. I going for medication treatment at this point. My vet insisted on spaying my dog from the day I bought her, I just don't completely trust that taking away dogs reproductive organs will take of all the problems. Could discharge be associated with something like uretra infection or something like that?
After a heat of the 21 days they are in for a period of about 6 to 8 weeks after the heat is over they are vunerable to pyometra.

If your dog has not been in heat and there is a yellowish discharge then could be Vaginitis. They get a yellowish discharge from that, is she licking the area constantly? Take her to the vets for a vaginal swab that will let you know what it is. If it turns out to be vaginitis then anti-biotics clears it up.

Usually with pyometra (open or closed) they are unwell as well.

If the vet does suspect pyometra well spaying is really the only way to go there and after never any risk of it ever happening again & your bitch is safe from that life threatening condition then for the rest of their life.
Actually, Dr. Hutchinson has great success for treating pyometra but i would only treat on a bitch i was going to breed in the future. Especially the absolute next season.

An open pyo resembles 'tomato soup' discharge........

Pyo is treated with progesterone hormones and must be started very quickly.

Thank you so much for the replies. You really cleared some things for me because Roxy, my dog's name, is very active with good appetite and so on; she does leak herself a lot and the color is light yellow. My vet gave her Baytril, abx, that I started to give her yesterday and hopefully it will clear her up. I understand the future risks if I go without spaying her and will soon go for it, especially when so many people recommend it. Thank you again, sincerely, Julia and Roxy:)-
Best wishes julia and let's know how roxy goes with the spaying. Really is better to have it done. She will live a long healthy life with no danger then of pyometra ever occuring.

I have known over the years a few people that have lost bitches to pyometra and it can happen so fast, without warning. Some pull through,a lot don't, so better safe then sorry.

Best wishes to you both and hope the discharge clears up soon for Roxy. :D
You don't want to give progesterone to a dog with pyometra. Sx is the best option for treatment but if you insist on treating a bitch that is going to be used for breeding then prostaglandin 2 alpha is the hormone that should be used. Antibiotics should be used with care because as they kill E.coli (usually the bacteria that causes pyo) more toxins are released into the dogs system causing septicemia and possible death. When pyometra is treated medically (with drugs), there is a high risk of re-occurrence. If you do not intend to breed the dog then she should be spayed.
My female husky/lab dog has just been diagnosed with pyometra and was given a 10 day course of antibiotics (Baytril) She started drinking and excessive amount of water which started to raise concerns for me, so I called my vet for an appointment which they make 2 days later. On the day after I called my vet, she started discharging a substance which had a very light brownish tint to it and by the day of her appointment, lots of discharge was coming out of her vagina which had a very apparent red color. I have refused to just allow treatment with the antibiotics alone because of everything I have read about the illness so I called my vet and told them I wanted her uterus and ovaries out as soon as possible so they booked me an appointment 4 days from now and I am so nervous because that is a while to wait with such a serious condition. My prayers are with everyone out there with an animal suffering from this condition. Cross your fingers and say a little pray for my baby. I love her so much

I had one pyo experience, and it did have a good outcome.
We had my female lab Macy have a pyo with drainage, and she rapidly became so ill that she was too weak and too infected for immediate surgery.
She had a course of antibiotics (I think at least a week or ten days - hard to remember exactly as it was over 10 years ago). Then she was scheduled for the spay. It was a hard recovery, she was a 10 yr old dog already. But she did recover and went on to live until she was 15.5 years old!
Good luck. :)
Don't mess with this. It can be life threatening.
I was faced with this decision late on a Sunday afternoon
when all vets were closed except emergency vets.
They told me I might be able to wait until Monday
to have the surgery done but it would be taking a
big chance. We had the surgery done immediately
(at a cost of thousands at emergency vet) and I'm
very glad we did.

I am having difficulty making a hard decision about my dog who is 15 yrs. and 7 months old. She ahs recently gotten open pyometra. She also has heart arrythmia. I have her on Baytril for ten days and now on sixth day. SHe has some side effects. I know that spaying is an option but I am afraid that she won't survive and it will just end her life. If she was younger by about three years I would have no problem with the spaying but I wonder if the surgery will, if she survives, even make her life quality any better. I felt that she wouldn't make it another year anyway and hate to shorten her life on surgery. Any thoughts out there? aT present I am just playing for time.
Do you have an emergency vet in your area?
My lab Macy was 12 when she had it. She was very sick, even too sick to make it through surgery.
My vet had me take her home on a couple very strong antibiotics. If she lived (which she did), she was to come back in 10 days for a spay. The drugs just got the infection down enough that she could live through the surgery. He was actually surprised she lived long enough for the surgery, she was that bad. But the spay is essential to get rid of all the infection and damaged tissue. If you aren't considering surgery, you would be kindest to have her put to sleep.
Good luck. I had 3 more happy years with Macy!
