How did you get your name?

Just a quick question as to how you all came up some very unique &/or unusual names for your OES's? I love them all!
I'll share our story . . . . . the kids were having a terrible time agreeing upon a name they both wanted to use . . . Morgan was more into "poeple" names & Tanner was more into favorite sports personality, etc. or more comman "pet" names. I read somewhere that a way to come up with a name is by using a vacation time/spot, a favorite hobby, etc. I mentioned this to the kids and since they are both black belts in Tae kwon doe, and it's a hobby the both share together, I suggested using the name "Tae" . . . . hence, they both loved it & that's where we're at today (but not to say the Tae always comes when being called by that name . . . . depends on if something else more interesting has his attention!)

Great story! Annie had her name when we got her. No interesting story there. I probably wouldn't have picked it but it suits her perfectly!
Just wanted a unique Asian name that fit our OES. :)

So, Yuki (white, lucky) was perfect!
Boo aks bear got her name as she remonded me of a teddy bear also with the roll as they walk it siuts her as she is so loving. we call har boo as that was the name we used at obedenice classes so she knew it was training time not play time :D
Bubba was already named but I call him my little polar bear because of all his white fur and the way he walks.
Bellatrix is one of my sons least favorite Harry Potter characters. I chose it to annoy him.
always annoy the 2 leg children it makes life interesting
cher
Lady Kassidie was already named ( rescue )

Flannigan ( rescue ) but at 8 weeks, redish fur, he just looked like him name. Irish some how.

Cinderella , Cinde ( rescue ) had no name at age 3. she was neglected and the spca got her. She went from rags to riches. Hence her name.

Fergie was named from the queens family. All nine pups had the family names. Some got changed with new owners but I like her name and it fit her.
Our dog is getting a second chance.

His name is Mulligan.

But it's just a coincidence.
my dog acted like a nickname for donkeys, it didn't seem right to AKC register him as jack___ so we left off the ___ part.
My 7 yr old son Ryan named Pepsi. We had found out his former name was Clyde but when I think of Clyde I think of a Clydesdale and he was a small guy.
We really didn't know much about his former life other than the couple that had him were old and had to give him up to move to a retirement community.
I am not sure where my son got the name. He had never heard of Pepsi Cola nor had he ever drank it. Shortly after we got Pepsi, Ryan asked what the symbol was on the side of a Pepsi truck. I told him it was Pepsi. He got the biggest kick out of that. He said Wow just like our dog!
Our German Shepherd Harley, had been neglected and we didn't want him to have to remember his previous home. His name had been Apollo.
He then got the name of Harley after my hubby's favorite posession. His Motorcycle.
My teen boys named Bosley after the fellow on Charlie's Angels.
Panda looked like a little panda cub....and as she grew and became more, well, oes, she became Pandemonium...still panda for short
My previous OES was named Bobo and she got her name because my uncle told me that it was proper to use the frist three letters of the breed in the name. Well in Belgium they are known as the Bobtail so hence BOBo. My OES now is named Lily. She came with the name ANGEL but I could tell from her pics that she was going to be far from it so I threw that out. I actually couldnt come up with anything better that was short so Lily kind of stuck. She just looked like a Lily to me. My moms OES Sammy got his name because also in Belgium there is this cartoon called Samson that all the kids watch and its an OES so she said Sammy and he also looks like a sammy.
Daisy was called Muffin at the shelter but it didn't seem to fit. I always try to let the animals tell me what their name is and Daisy Mae seemed to be it.

I once got a kitten from a shelter in VT - long haired black cat they called Abby. When I picked her up, I asked her what her name was and the only name that came into my mind was Clarissa - not one I would have picked out or even thought of, but since that continued to come back to me, she was Clarissa. She became the Queen of all around her and is now living with my niece in CT and rules the house (long story on why)
My first OES was called Rocky, he was a rescue dog and came with that name so we kept it.

When we knew we was getting an OES puppy we thought about a name and ended up rejecting all the suggestions as they just didn't seem right somehow until we came up with Sammy and it just suited. My Dad's middle name was Samuel so when we decided to get a second OES it was decided early that she would be named Daisy after my Mum
We just brainstormed names until we came up with Jasper. We both liked it and it suits him. :)
My Brie was originally Charlotte, when she came home she just did not respond to that name, think she was telling us don't like the name so I won't listen when called LOL, well after a few different ones we settled on Brie and being that all her family have french pet names well she responded to that so that is what she is called, she let us know!!
Barkley was named by my granddaughter. He reminded her of the character on Sesame Street. She couldn't say Barkley at first though, so it came out Brocolli. (She's autistic and has a difficult time with words --she calls me grasshopper instead of grandmother). Eventually she learned to say Barkley, in fact when she calls me now--I'm a bit jealous because she always asks to talk to him. 8O They bark at each other over the phone for a few minuets and she squeels with laughter and then gets back on the phone with me and says "ok, talk to you later" Apparently--I don't rank anymore :)
Well sweet heart, you must remember this.......
here's looking at you, kid :D

These were his first words to us

so

Bogart

seemed like a good idea
Most dogs here have been rescues, so often came with names:

MO is short for Simone, her shelter name.

Jack for Jumping Jack Flash as he has a hard time keeping four on the floor.

Harry was named by a little girl who wanted to adopt him but her mother said no. I told her to give him a name anyway.

Fox for his broad face and narrow nose, Fox-like.

Glacier came with the name......she's all white. We often call her Goo-Goo or Googles just to be different.

Paige is from her registered name " --'s Society Paige" because as a pup she was always digging under fences to visit the other dogs. Now she could care less.

others : Crumpet and Maudie for their English association, Olivia came with the name, and Splash (for a big splash of grey on her side mantle.

At one time we the "movie" dogs: Shane as in "come back Shane", Abbott as in "hey, Aaabbbooottt!" and of course, Stellaaaaaa. It was fun calling them to dinner.
My first sheepie I got when I was 15, I named her "Shannon" we had her for 2 years..she was the most hyper dog (that is until we got Avalon :? ) My dad didnt like her... one day I came home from school and was told that Shannon went to live with a lady on a farm.... Now that I am older I really think my parents had my dog put down

When I was first married, our first sheepie was named "Barkley" he stayed with us for over a year until I became pregnant and he all of a sudden became aggressive...he would attack the Chow for no reason and he suddenly decided that pooping all over the house was a good idea when we were at work... so he went to live with a friend of ours, he had a better life with them..they had acreage and they were home all day with him. Both of us were working over 12 hour days at that time  I always said when I was home I would get another sheepie.

Our eldest daughter is named Morgan...she LOVES the King Arthur tales...hence "Merlin" he was originally named "Zorro" by his breeder because of his mask..but Zorro meant nothing to the kids  Merlin has several nicnames too....BooBoo's,Merlin Moomoo, Mugamaguski

Avalon came with the name "Darby" We got her from Merlin's breeder...she was a RETURN! the lady that had her couldnt care for her. She was 4 1/2 months old and a holy terror! 8O I hated the name Darby  so we tried to match "Merlin" I had wanted "Nimue" hubby said that the dog would end up being called NIMWIT (we didnt know this then but that would be a PERFECT name for Avalon  ) So we took a family vote with several of the Arthur names...Avalon won. Avalon has several nicnames....Avi, Avalonian, Skuzmuffin, Fuzzigirl

Faith is a rescue dog...they said she was a OES/Wheaten, I'm not so sure...she is more Wheaten than OES. Which is ok with me...I always wanted a WheatenShe came with her name Faith...she was the most abused dog the rescue people had ever seen and they werent sure they could save her so they named her Faith. She likes her name and we do too :P She doesnt have many nicnames yet...she likes when we call her "Faithy"
With Dancer it's kind of funny, that was what I had intended to name her even before she was conceived, and then she happened to be born close to Christmas so her breeder named the litter all reindeer names. When I chose her and said her name is Dancer we thought it was funny that her name was already Dancer, I didn't know that's what they were already calling her. LOL
With Sky, the breeder had called her Princess at first, she was a demanding whiny puppy always looking for attention. I had already planned on naming her Sky though so as soon as we knew which puppy I was getting she wasn't called Princess anymore.
Lennon got his name from a dog we saw on the park about 8 years ago. It was a huge sheepie and his upright called him. We decided that if we ever got a sheepdog, his name was going to be Lennon... Besides, we like the beatles, but that's just a coincidence.

Sofa was originally called Sofia. We shortened to Sofi in the beginning. 30 minutes after she came into our house, she claimed property of the small Sofa, since then is her obervation point and hiding place when we want her to go out. Since she likes it so much, that's where she got her name.
We fon't have a sheepie yet but we do have three other doggies. Our cheasapeake bay retriver was a rescue but he was a stray so he had no name. He kept reminding us od a kodac bear, the face shape is the same and he has yellow eyes and he has a little thicker hair. Soon after we got him we were watcking a show and those bears came on and it was immediatley clear to us what his name should be, they both act exactly the same!!! Our other dog is a knee high aqbout 45 lbd doggie. She was breed to route out the hogs for hunting. She is very sweet and gentle. I was reading a book at thetime and a character was namned Penny. They personna were one in the smae so it stuck, she also has a redich copper hue so most people think thats why we namned her that. Our third is a full blooded very expensive German SHepard that my parents bought but i was very unhappy with my family has they spent no time with himj, and he became very people shy and was hard to work with b/c of "attention neglect". His name was King. Now more than ever has he become into his name sake. He is one of the smartest dogs i have ever met. I amtraing him right now to do the "take one step take 2 steps now sit things. Very complivated but he is catching on very beautifully. SORRY I haven't been able to brag on my pups latley.
Shannon
We were looking at names of famous people in English history and came up with a list of 20 names that we likes. Baxter (for Richard Baxter, the English cleric) was the only name that he responded to.

Cassiopia is named for the constellation (her full name is Cassiopia Andromeda). My husband had promised me the moon and the stars when we first got together so....she was renamed when she joined us.

Sharkey was named for his personality - he is white and although he is only 30 pounds he acts like he is much bigger - he is our great white shark.

Jennifer, Baxter, Cassiopia and Sharkey
well eintstein is not fron the famoius physicist no my hubby says when we ge a sheep dog i want to call it einstein like the dog in back to the future.

so when a baby boy sheepie was found off my hubby went to get him.

if we every get another their name has been decided all ready : faraday

my hubby into physic what can i say

zoe and einy
Nothing to exciting with Fred names.......that was his name when I adopted him from the SPCA.
The interesting story is with my golden Christian. I had just signed the papers on him that evening with the Humane Society and was not able to bring him home until they did a house check. That night I was talking to a friend and they said what r u going to call him? His former owner named him Murphy. I said I had not really thought about it but his name is Murphy now, so I probably will stick with that. I went to bed that night and was awaken out of a dead sleep. A male voice, which was quite audible and sounded as if was coming from someone standing in my room said "His name will be Christian". At first I was somewhat frighten by the voice, then I got calm, thought about it for a few seconds and thought Christian is a good name so Christian it will be and went back to sleep. Now mind you I was alone then and noone else was in my home that night. I would like to think it was some Divine intervention and I am not one to mess with the "BIG PLAN", so that is how Christian got to be named Christian.
I love scottish names for sheepies, it was between dougal and hamish dougal won. I also like celtic names to
Bunker got her name from my ex. I wanted Daisy, Sadie or Maggie. He said I got to pick the breed he got to pick the name. It was going to be Titlest but we all know what that would have been shorten too and I wasn't yelling for that to come in at night, Putter or Bunker. (Can you tell we both love Golf). Putter didn't suit her but Bunker really did and still does. When I get another one it will be called Bowgie. But Bunkie is just called Fattie lately. The scary thought is that she answers to it.

Clyde answers to Chubs, Tubs or Tubby too-- you're not alone!

Clyde is just Clyde-- the older he gets the more the name suits him. Before him, I always thought if I got a male dog that I would name him Clive. The night before I went to get him, I stayed up all night thinking about him and by the end of the night Clyde seemed more appropriate. Looking back now, I have a feeling most people would think I was saying Clyde if i had called him Clive anyway!

Lucy was nameless for almost a week after rescuing her-- I hadn't planned on a female or an adult dog so she was tougher. My ex-boyfriend actually suggested Lucy because I've always loved Lucille Ball. It was a nice tribute and it fits her well too!
I have a distant relative, a rather easy going, laid back Jesuit named Bernard, who we all referred to as Father Barney - fits Barney character quite well. Maggie (rescue) came to me as Ella Mae but was never registered. I Registered her as Maggie in memory of my Daughter in Laws Sheepie also named Maggie and my first introduction to the world of sheepdogs.
My O'Bailey Boy got his name several ways. We knew we were going to get a boy. Both of my sons wore boutique clothes by The Bailey Boys when they were babies which I just adored. So, I knew after much deliberation w/the family :) , I knew that we were going to go with Bailey Boy. As it turns out, Bailey Boy just happened to be born on St. Patrick's Day 2005! In keeping with the Luck O' the Irish, he is "o"ficially O'Bailey Boy Quiggly(after his dad & grandad) Wagtail(after his mommy)Several people thought I should've went with Bailey's Irish Creme!! On another note, we once had an OES that was Calvin Klein's Obsession aka Calvin! My Alex was Alexander Zachary Hamilton Quiggly(my hubby named him!!) :)
Gus got his name from the fat little mouse off of Cinderella (Gus Gus).. Yes, I make him watch Cinderella with me :D He was originally my brothers dog and he has several names during that time (Zeus, Snoopy...) But he only had him for like a week and then I took him! So it became GusGus
This is really a fun thread! :D

The Gooch is really "Sir Gucci Wigglebum" it's hard to explain what goes on in my crazy head...but I just loved this name! Sir: for an english knight, Gucci: because I just knew he would be "Gucci" like a word for the best, he's the Gucciest! And Wigglebum: pretty self explainatory! Except the funny thing is he really doesn't wiggle his bum?! 8O The Gooch is more of a laugher!

Murphy was named when we got him from the rescue. I kept it because we really do not know his history, we know we are at least, his 3rd family and I figured that his name may have already changed a few times so we kept it. I'm glad we did, all I have to say is Murphy, and his little powder puff goes crazy! I actually say his name alot, just to see his cute tail GIVER'.
I don't have a sheepdog at the moment but I really want to get one sometime in the future. My neighbor used to have a sheepdog named Buttons. He got his name because he used to chew on the buttons of a sweater.
Its such a cute name that I've decided that I'm going to name my sheepdog Buttons (when I get him).
One of my favorite dogs that I had while growing up was named Buttons. She was a cute little Brittany (my parents raised Brittanys) and I showed her in the breed ring and in obedience in 4-H. Her registered name was NorStar's Buttons and Bows.
I think I actually have a picture..somewhere!
I guess I missed this thread before. Now that it is being revived.

Mine are named after Bob Marley and Captain Morgan (of course) :)

Actually Marley also means from the lake in the meadow (we live at a lake that was made by flooding a meadow) and Morgan means waiting by the waters edge (as well as from the line in Two Pina Coladas).

I decided their names had to be both music and water related. Now going with that theme, the next one.......
I forgot to mention that Buttons is the one in my avatar picture. :)
Abigail aka Abi's name was whispered to me via the Rainbow Bridge by my (then) most beloved dog-Baby
I wanted a sheepie from the age of 5 but never thought of a name until I was 13.. Rufus is from the Bill & Ted films and from the day I first saw it I just knew that would be his name. I then had to wait another 16 years before I got him :D
When I adopted Violet from the Rescue this was already her name. Violet really fit her and the only "tweeking" I did was changed the spelling. Her papers read "Vilet" and I added her middle name of Jewel after my granddaughter Jenah Jewel. So Violet Jewel is her name.

China, my Aussie Shepherd, I adopted at 8 weeks old. Her name was "pale face" and so I decide to change that. With China's blue eyes and white face she reminded me of "fine China". Her middle name is Aqua, because her blue eyes are the color of water...China Aqua.

Asia, my newest Aussie Shepherd was originally named Sparkels. So I decide to rename her also. I felt I needed to pick a name that would kinda go with the other pet names we already had. I picked Asia because she is dark with beautiful black, straight fur, eyelashes and dark eyes. I really wanted a pretty name for her. Her middle name is Jade. Asia Jade.

The funny thing is, Asia never responded to the name Sparkles, but as soon as I started calling her Asia, she would respond. So I guess she likes her name. lol

Oh, I can't forget Pearl the cat. Pearl was easy, she is all white. At the time we adopted Pearl, we also adopted a black cat we named Onyx, who has since passed.
Dee - that's almost chilling - care to expand on that?

Belle came pre-named. It fits her. Liz, too. It doesn't fit her. Her brother's name is Claiborne...Oh, well. She's seven years old. What can you do?

With Mad, I was there when she was born. I watched her grow. She so mesmerized me that I wanted to register her M' Mad About You. Breeder had a theme litter so made it M's Mad Money instead (much sulking on my part  ) Then she named her Maddie (more sulking). Mad earned the name Mad Dog in agility. It's Madeline when she's naughty....

When we bred Mad, I inisted every puppy's registered name end with Madness. (Dawn's Chewie was supposed to be March Madness, his call name was Coach. So named by Sunny AKA Lucali - this naming business can become pretty incestuous  )

Before the litter was even on the ground I had decided that my pick female would be M's Must Be Madness. Well, my pick female (structurally) and the one I fell in love with were two different beings. When they were five weeks old, co-breeder, vet and Belle's co-owners and I were all sitting around watching them. Seven well behaved normal puppies, and then there was Sybil...not yet named (co-breeders designation: "that ugly dark bitch" didn't count  ) I decided that I would give up my pick name to the one who actually lived up to it (step one in assuring that ugly duckling goes nowhere  ) Belle's co-owner watched her for a while and said you should name her Sybil after whatsherface with the multiple personalities. It stuck.

Co-breeder named my (official) pick bitch M's Midnight Madness, and from there came the name Macy (after the store...says she who shops as little as possible... ) Maybe that's why I have such a hard time relating to her. It fits.

I let his new owners name Che. Enough said. And then I got him back and now I have to live with a whiny boy dog named after a South American revolutionary. Ack!

Kristine
What a lead in...
Chewie doesn't fit in Chewie's registered name! After the above mentioned rules, I had to put in "Alice Acres", which is our farm and kennel name. Alice Lake is the lake you all have seen behind my house with all the mushing pictures!!! How appropriate. :D :D So, he is M's Alice Acres Madness, AKA, Chewie.

I also have a Macy, my chocolate lab. Macy was her puppy call name by her breeder, and I liked it (or couldn't think of anything better  ). She is Maxi's Touch of Class (again, after the store I never shop at!)

Simon came as Simon, and having a basset who knows his name and listens is a gift from above. He is registered as Alice Acres Simon Says.

I found my Buttons pictures - two actually. I am showing her at a Brittany Specialty - I was about 10 yrs old. Those that know cars can probably figure out how old I am..

Here I am with the judge:

And I won! (I am admiring my pretty blue ribbon) :

We started showing at a young age at our house!!
Well Luna and Tonks started out as "Storm and Trooper"; I thought it would be funny to be at the dog park and call out "Storm Trooper" and have them come running. So the breeder began thier lives calling them that. But my boyfriend wasn't keen on its at about week 4 we had to come up with something new.

We finally settled on Luna and Tonks; based on the characters from the Harry Potter novels/books. The personalities just fit. Of course, I now want to dye Tonks' white parts purple....
Patch was named Abigail (Abby) when she came to me - she just didn't fit the name. It took me about a week to name her - someone said, you know, I love that patch on her eye, why not Patch. And, waa laa - Patch it was. Only problem I've ever had is everyone has to ask, is she a boy or girl - the name doesn't define gender. She got used to her name right away. I have a cousin in England named Winifred and love the name - was going to call Patch Fred - I saw where someone else named their OES that name. But for now, I'll love my Patch - whatever her name.

ah we have that problem; "Tonks" is very gender specific. I'm always getting asked if they are brother and sister, and have to explain that they are both girls.

Its nice to know about another dog named Buttons. :) I happen to think that its the cutest name ever. What do you think about his picture in my avatar?
Mony is short for Samoen, which is a combination of our two male dogs who passed Sam and Moe...Laci, was something we could all agree on.

Yes, we are "censoring" :D

Your Buttons is cute. It must be the good name! :D
We got our little girl from a rescue with the name Angle but it didn't seem to suit her for some reason
So we brain stormed and came up with Flossie, as it reminds us of candy floss,so pink = girly and fluffy which she is!
Although she is often refered to 'Floozy' as seeks attention and rolls on her back for a tummy rub if you just look at her!!!

Wasn't that a combined dog and classic car show?
My hubby wanted an ole english name for an old english dog.

he thought of George I wanted to call him Henry

maybe the next one.....

Thank you Kerry!!!! :D :D

That's right - it WAS a classic car show!
:D Willoughby is named after a character in a Jane Austin novel: I just liked the sound of it and it's very English. I also found out later that it's a name in his family tree! 8)

I named my eldest cat Edwina because she's seemed very lady-like even as a kitten. She's a Maine Coon and a rescue and is now 12 years old.

Percival is 5 and is extremely naughty. 8O He just seemed like a Percival, Percy for short.
