I've been working with him at times on my bed. He was always excited to be there & it would take him a while to calm down & lie down after he was done chewing on whatever he could get a hold of, but lately, the last few times I've had him there, as soon as I get in bed, he goes crazy pawing & digging at the sheet (always covered the bed with an old sheet first) right beside me like he's trying to dig a hole or something! I'm not kidding, he goes 90 mph & I have no idea what he's trying to accomplish! He will not stop no matter what I try to do to comfort him. I'll hold his legs & say stop, he'll roll over & lay down & as soon as I let go, he jumps up & is at it again! Soooooo, I get frustrated & tired of trying to make him stop & take him out the laundry room (this is where he sleeps at night, but not in a crate & he's fine there as long as he knows everybody else is in bed!) |

Boy does that sound familiar....I dont let Panda sleep in the bed, however, on occassion, Ill let her up for cuddle time...she doesnt seem to want to cuddle but dig after my feet and hands that are under the covers...nipping away, digging and content as can be...after about 20 minutes I have to kick her off because she just wont quiet down..and she is 2....thank goodness she likes her own bed, because she is a bed hog anyway |
We let Izzie sleep anywhere she wants on the upper level. She usually sleeps on the floor most of the night, but gets on the bed early in the morning. At that point she just climbs up and passes out.
If she is up on the bed before I go to sleep she will usually just lie down. Sometimes she will see my feet moving under the covers and attack the "creature" she thinks is there. She also occasionally scratches and digs, but will stop after 30 seconds or so. So I can't really help you, but to say maybe he will get used to it and the digging will lose it's allure. Amanda |
It's kinda funny in a way, 'cause when I try & get him to lay, he'll lay for a few seconds & is just panting away like he's been running forever! I've wondered if he could just be to hot on the bed . . . . . earlier days when he would go to sleep he would get up a reposition quite often & always be panting like he was hot or something, so after a few hours, I would get up & take him back to the laundry room! |
Annie doesn't sleep with us on the bed. On the few occassions she has been allowed up there (when Steve is out of town), she doesn't stay for long. She pants heavily and gets really warm. She also prefers our leather couch as opposed to either of the fabric couches in the house. Much cooler for her! |
Both of my dogs knead like cats. I think Clyde picked it up from Lucy and their dog bed downstairs is all worn in the middle from the constant pawing.
Clyde has some dog form of OCD when it comes to my bed upstairs. If I let him go, he'll actually make the bed (about as good as I do, which isn't saying a lot but for a dog...). He'll yank the sheet all the way up on each side, then the blanket, let out a big sigh like he's been working really hard, then start pawing the top of it like crazy, messing up his work. Then, and only then, can he plop down to relax. |
So maybe it is just a "warm" thing!
Tae also only gets to be on the bed when my husband is working graveyard shifts! He would probably never permit it, but I think he knows I do it . . . . . so I'm spoiling him . . . what else are they for?!! |
Sounds like the "nesting" my Max does.....he beats us to the bed and begins "fluffing" up the covers and blankets until he gets a nice big old pile under him and them he plops down |
I've banned my two from the bed, besides scrunching and hogging all the covers, they would leap onto the bed and land across the top of us, two big heavy fluffies doing this in the middle of the night when they felt like they wanted up, one started this so the other had to join in, well it had to stop as we got sick of being squashed and woken up with leaping fluff balls and besides that NO ROOM left on the bed LOL
Mind you they love to scratch and re-arrange their own beds, I can't tell you how many doggie doonas I have replaced, I've lost count |
Daisy generally prefers to sleep on the floor under the headboard of my waterbed (she decided this was her spot the day I brought her home). When it is really cold (I keep the heat turned down as much as possible, especially at night) or early in the morning she has recently decided to get up on the bed and "cuddle" with me. Occasionally, she will make a couple of turns before settling down, but if she ever started digging, I'd have to put the bed off limits. So far, no big problems. |
Letting a dog onto your bed is not encouraged at least until they have completely shown they respect you as pack boss. All this digging means they are trying to make YOUR bed, their bed. No! Off they go. They must be made to know only you, the benevolent dictator will allow them onto the bed if they respect the rules. They have to earn the right thru proper behavior.
Actually having dogs on the bed isn't a great idea anyway as they can bring all sorts of nasties in bed with you..........since our guys have all that hair: spiders, fleas, ticks, dirt, fecal stuff (dingleberries). That said, my guys do get on the bed with us, but once they misbehave there's no scolding, they are "kicked" off immediately. Bed is a previlege, not a right. It isn't their bed! |
einstein is only allowed on the bed if he gets up and lays down straight away. he 'digs' too he has his own bed in our room (at the foot of our bed by the wall) and he won't sleep untill hes dug it about abit.
my hubby and i have two covers a thick warm one and a thin one if we get to hot the thick one get rejected onto the floor which einy thinks is great coz he gets up and digs himself into it you get up in the morning to only a dog head sticking out the covers. if he digs on our bed he get kicked out of bed and hes only allowed on when one of us isn't in it (he a bed hog too) but he knows hes not allowed up at the pillow end only at the bottom unless otherwise invited however latey hes been sleeping on the floor between our sons cot and our bed, i think he trying to stop people getting to us, my baby son and him are the best of friends (god helpme when isaac is walking hes bad enough at feeding the dog now ) he also gets up and patrols the house he ca do this 2-3 times a night you hear him padding round the house and up and down the stairs zoe and patrol dog einy |

Bailey also patrols the house at night. He sleeps wherever he feels like it (his bed, his crate, the floor) for a while, then patrols the house, then sleeps somewhere else. We don't allow him on any furniture though, including the beds. This weekend he was very put out because we had tons of company and we made him sleep in our room with the door closed. He just kept talking to us about it - didn't we understand that he had to be out there checking out the house? We figured the guests would get more sleep if he wasn't on patrol |
Benjamin is a digger too!
He isn't allowed on the bed or any of the furniture, but he digs at his pillow (on the floor next to me) at night and when he gets warm he gets up and lays in the walk in shower attached to my room, where he also digs (for about 5 minutes). He does this on the tile floors in the kitchen and front entry too! What is the deal with that??? I guess it is just another fun quork, to love about him!! |
Drez used to do the same thing, too, and when she's feeling up to it, still does it to a lesser extent. Not on our bed, but on her own bed. She'd paw at it sometimes, and other times she would just circle round and round, like a cat, until she got to the middle, then she'd plop down! What a clown!

I have a dog and hell like dig but no often and then hell roll in my pillow haha but I think he just likes our smell |
moe gets on the bed and when i turn off the light gets off lies on tile floor..however..i can tell when hubby is ready to come in..because i hear the heavy pitter patter of six feet racing to get in next to me..it is hilarious |
Chauncey isn't a digger but is quite good at getting the pillows just right with his nose. Chauncey loves to be in bed. Bob has just recently transferred to night shift so Chaunce sleeps with me. In the morning Bob comes home and lets him out and then Chauncey goes back to bed with him. They get up around 3pm and then Chaunce will bother Bobby later in the evenings until he goes in on the bed to watch TV with him before going to work. I'm a night owl and around mid-night he will occasionally try to put me to bed , eventually he gives up and goes in alone. |
We don't allow our pets to sleep with us. But Archie will dig his towels(laid on kitchen floor when we come in from the rain and snow) into a heap then lie on the floor not the towels, it's probably a primal animal behaviour, maybe he's checking to make sure one of the cats's isn't hiding under them? Maybe they don't smell right? Archie when he was a young puppy he would turf up his bedding in his crate and shove it in the corner. Now his bedding in the crate never gets disturbed. |
