AND I STILL WANT TO SMOKE |
|
First, Holly - CONGRATULATIONS!!!! It's been one whole month!!
Second, just remember - one day at a time. And just think of all the $$ you're saving!! Keep it up! Chris |
GO HOLLY GO.
It will be 2 months for me on Friday and I still want to smoke. My ENT told me that will last 2 years. Can we make it? YES. If nothing else, the cost will keep us smober. Also, if we start again, we'll have to quit again. We don't want to do that twice. |
This would be easy if:
*I had no employees *I had no sick dogs to worry about *There were no quarterly/monthly/end of year taxes to do BUT I WILL do this if it kills me |
Just remember, Holly, if you DON'T do this, it will kill you!
And Paula - wow! Congratulations on your two month fete! WOO-HOO TO YOU BOTH!! cHRIS |
Congrats, Holly & Paula!!
Major accomplishment!! |
You GO Holly!!!!!
WooHoo!!! Believe me, you don't want to be smoking when you come out here. You'd have to hear Bob's lecture on what smoking does to your body and how gross it is and what he went through with his heart attack because he smoked. It's a good lesson but comes off kind of like, "We used to walk 30 miles to school, barefoot, uphill, both ways!" |
Maxmm wrote: "We used to walk 30 miles to school, barefoot, uphill, both ways!" HAHAHA I DID walk 30 miles to school |
Six Weeks. Make it two more weeks.
If you can't make it just two more weeks, how about just today. Just make it today. You KNOW you can make it just today. Pretty soon it'll be Six Weeks. |
I think I can, I think I can, I think I can
But I'm eating Doritos, I hate Doritos |
You guys have baked Doritos, eat the baked ones!
If you can't make it just today, make it just this minute and then just this minute, then just this minute. |
Please don't tease me with Dunkin Donuts |
I love Doritos. Send them to me. Are they Nacho Cheese????
I chain smoked when I talked on the phone. Of course I replaced that with eating (which is rude when you're talking). One night I ate an entire bag of Cheetos while talking to my sister. . |
Sisters don't count for stuff like that do they? And yes, they were nacho cheese |
GOOD FOR YOU! that is awesome!
Have you heard the saying "Once a smoker always a smoker" that is why it is so important to not give into the urge - -eventually the cravings will be less and less intense and .............the worst is over you have made it a full 30 days!!!!!!!! - - just keep looking at today and tomorrow will look after itself! |

Mandy was he smoking about 12 packs of non filters a day since he was about 6 to have a heart attack that young? What happened? |
They think some of it was hereditary and he's adopted so they can only speculate. They do believe that his smoking was almost wholly responsible for his actual heart attack; the thickening of the blood, plaque build up and hardening of the arteries. Did I mention that his skin was pretty leathery looking from smoking? Just thought I'd throw that in there for good measure!
HE had been smoking Marlboro Reds when he smoked; I think it was about 10 years. I'm not 100% sure of the time frame because it seems so long ago now. And he was young when he did it. Now imagine what a body that's seen a few years is going through when you puff on that thing. Anyway, he had multiple occlusions all over his heart, almost all of which were 95% or greater. He ended up on a ventilator for 28 days and lost a large part of his left ventricle. (That's the part that has to be the strongest to pump blood out to the rest of the body. He had a triple bypass. They took arteries from his forearm and his thigh. After the surgery he ended up with a collapsed lung because his respiratory system had a hard time compensating due to it being so beat up from smoking. They think that this bypass will last 10-15 years and then it will need to be repeated. Most people are so old when they have bypass surgery that they don't need to worry about the redo suregery. Bob really is the best spokesperson for not smoking anymore. He's very intense about it. He wanted to keep the container of black tar that they suctioned out of his lungs to show people. We should have taken a picture of it. It was very much like when you don't change your oil for about 9,000 miles only about twice as thick. That visual alone should help deter people. |
Goodness, Mandy! What a story he has to tell!! He's fortunate to still be here. |
Seeing as how he was clinically dead for almost 5 minutes and was cardioverted (they lost count at 8 ) he's very freakin' lucky! |
Mandy, is he fine now (besides most likely needing a new procedure in 10-15 years)? Like can he tell that whole thing happened to him (physically)? Does he feel different? And, when it comes time for the new one, will they just schedule it around the time they think he'll need a new one, or do they wait for an 'episode' or anything? |
He's pretty much fine now. He plays ice hockey, which scares the hell out of his cardiologist. He gets winded when playing but he's overweight so that could be part of it. The doctor that did his surgery said that he should act and feel like it never happened. That means that if there area any twinges, or other symptoms he should be seen right away and he has some limitations, shoveling snow, overhead lifting, are things that make him really feel it. Otherwise, he's okay.
They are trying to get him to have an IED put in. It's like a little disc that would shock the heart if it started to do anything funny. But that's really for someone who is older and doesn't do much anymore. So we're waiting to see what happens with that. They should just give us an AED to carry around. He has yearly checkups to determine if there are any more problems arising. They do more extensive tests if they think that there is another blockage forming or any other muscle damage. They would most likely schedule a procedure if anything looked funky but they aren't too worried at this point. The results from his last Cath were viewed at a big cardiologist convention and all of those doctors said everything is looking fine. (Always nice to be a case study!) And to think, all of this came from smoking. Nudge, nudge, hint, hint. Don't even think about picking up that cigarette, no matter how much you want it. |
Oh, and he also wants to have the Don Ho procedure done where they inject stem cells into the heart muscle to help regenerate and grow new muscle. I think it's just because he wants to move to Hawaii. (There's something about getting leid in their too! ) |

Wow, Mandy! What a story! You mentioned in another post about Bob being clinically dead for 5 minutes, but what an eye opener to hear the whole story! How old is Bob, if you don't mind my asking?
Chris |
What man wouldn't want to go to Hawaii and get leied?
Is the IED what Dick Cheney had implanted? Like an inside automatic defibrillator or something to that extent? That is awesome that he is doing so well and can play ice hockey! Ice hockey in general makes me cringe (so rough!) so I can only imagine how those cardiologists feel. |
Yup, the IED is what Cheney has. Now, when he nods off during congressional speeches, ZAPPPP! (Just kidding, bush has a remote control for it. Ahh, there's that rimshot!)
As for the hockey thing, I'm pretty sure it actually gave the cardiologist chest pain. He just stood there shocked, like he was waiting for the punch line. Bob just turned 40 in December; he was 33 when he had his heart attack. So now we celebrate his regular birthday and his second birthday, when he died and arose, in July. |
Maybe an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator )?
The newest on the market are the CRT-D (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy - Defibrillator). These not only have the same functionality as an ICD, but also pace the heart chambers into a more effective rhythm with one another). This one even monitors fluids in the chest, a symptom of Congestive Heart Failure http://www.medtronic.com/physician/hf/i ... entry.html Can you tell I'm a Medtronics Shareholder? |
