The definition of Avatar

The question has been asked several times by members of the forum. Having nothing better to do, I thought I'd see if the word is in the dictionary. MSN's dictionary presents the following:

1. incarnation of Hindu deity: an incarnation of a Hindu deity in human or animal form, especially one of the incarnations of Vishnu such as Rama and Krishna

2. embodiment of something: somebody who embodies an idea or concept

3. online image of somebody in virtual reality: a movable three-dimensional image used to represent somebody in cyberspace

4. computer games computer game persona: in computer games, a character or persona of a player with a graphical representation

[Late 18th century. < Sanskrit avatāra "descent" (of a god to earth)]

Since most of us use pictures of our dogs to represent us in virtual reality does that mean these lovable, mischieveous, (?) funny creatures embody our personalities? Hmmmmm....

Very nice work, George. I know the kids watch a cartoon called Avatar, too. I was wondering what possible connection there could be.
Thanks, George. I kept wondering what the definition was, but too lazy to pull out a dictionary :D
