Grooming Sky

Well, my bad, over the holidays I let things go a bit, and hence that combined with the rainy weather we've had for the last couple of weeks means my dogs are a mess. Sky has a few mats, a few more on her legs, but it's not too bad so I wasn't going to put it off any longer.
First, a full brush out and removing any mats before her bath.
I decided for fun to post pics as I go. The first bunch of pics are pre bath, and only as far as I've gotten, which is half of half of Sky. LOL
I do head and feet last. She's not even in full coat yet, hopefully this coat will grow a bit more before the end of April when i plan on getting her in the ring again.

Notice the layers of color, from the black puppy coat tips to the silvery grey stuff at the skin?
Image
Her butt, you can see what a mess her legs are *sigh*
Image
Lifting her head to see why I've stopped brushing. LOL
Image
We're getting there!
Image
She doesn't care as long as I don;t interfere with nap time.
Image
Her head and legs are going to be the biggest challenge to get mat free without removing too much coat.
Image
If she were anymore relaxed she'd slide right off.

More to come! LOL
I have a huge blister on my hand, from holding the brush. I was wondering if any others run into this? I think it's because I am left handed and maybe hold the brush wrong?
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
what beautiful colouring boo never went the silver colour cant wait to see more pics :D
I really wish Pepsi would stay still like that :(
Great pictures. Sky's coat is beautiful.
I want to see the finished product :D
What a good girl and how beautiful! Maybe Annie wouldn't walk around the room as much if we had a table for her to lay on. We have a pretty crappy dining room table. I wonder if that will hold her weight!

My right shoulder and hand always hurt afterwards and cramp up.
:D
A couple more... after a couple more lines....
She had so many tiny knots... grrr....
Anyway, you'll notice the forbidden slicker on the corner of the table. That is NOT what I am using.... I'm using my #1AllSystems pin brush, and my Resco combination comb mostly. When I come across a mat, I pick it apart into tiny mats wiht my fingers, pull the comb through it to remove the tiny mats, and sometimes there are still some tiny snarls that slip through the comb so I will then use the slicker, one stroke only, to remove those itty bitty snarls.
Just thought I would clear that up.... LOL

By this time she is getting a little antsy, so it's time for a break and pee time. LOL Coffee time for me :D
I still have two words for you ---

Oster Golden A5

(ok, it was 3 words)
Hi
Your coat looks great, nice, thick, good texture, nice length. Your doing a great job. What shows are you going to go to in April? Coat should grow a little by then.
I'm going next week and no where near ready.
Your holding the brush too tight if your getting a blister, loosen up your grip, it won't go anywhere.

Barbara
Ron....

:P
Thanks Barb :)

Starting in April it will be the Victoria County Kennel Club shows, in Oakwood Ontario, then Omemee Ontario, then Peterborough Ontario etc. All Ontario shows for this year. Next year will be more travelling, and my boy pup will be shown in Canada and the US.
Sky will likely only be shown here.
wow...panda would NEVER lay that still for that long...Im highly impressed....get back to work you slacker!
Whew... I'm done one side of Sky, except for legs and ears and muzzle.

Now beginning to brush it back down into place to get ready to start the other side....

Very very pretty coat colour too, OK how many hours are you up too now? How's the arms and back holding out? When is the next coffee break? 8)

Such a good munchin is Sky

He can!

I believe Willowsprite is using the famous Lindon Hypnotic
technique!
It's amazing!!!!!!!!! Look here:
http://www.oes.org/html/establishing_th ... _line.html

I know I need to learn this terrific hypnotic method!!!

(Carl! Hope you are offering a distance learning course

 )
LOL... as for hours, I have had to take breaks here there and everywhere.... trying to get this done with 4 kids home is not exactly easy. LOL
I'm not really sure how long... I think I started around 1 pm? Take out time from doing everything else, and taking pics, uploading and resizing pics, posting, making kids lunch and supper, talking on the phone, breaking up sibling fights, lol.... taking dogs out to pee....umm, I think I've only actually brushed for a total of 2 and a half maybe 3 hours.
The second side always goes faster, since a lot of it is done on the first side. I think maybe an hour to do her other side, and another 30 minutes for each leg probably, and maybe 15-30 minutes for her ears and muzzle (they're in pretty good shape, no mats so not too long)
I probably have about 2-3 hours to go. Then bathing her will take about 30 mins, and blow drying and re brushing all over again will take about an hour and a half, maybe 2 hours.
My back is sore and my hands are cramped....
I'll finish brushing tonight and leave bathing, blow drying and brushing again for tomorrow.

Beautiful work Willowsprite, I'm signing up for your
distance learning grooming course too!

Looks like Sky will sleep well tonight !!
lisaoes... how often, for how long, and using what products do you groom your beauties?
This all day event thing is only because I let it go so long, for me to keep my girls up I need to do half a dog a day, meaning each dog is fully groomed about every fourth day. Doing half a dog a day means I spend about 45 mins to an hour grooming each day.
If I let it go, it's a mess.
Kelsey is once a week, about 1-2 hours throughly right through, she does not get too knotty as being long retired from the showring I have combed out all the undercoat on the greys so she still has lots of coat but not all the work.

Brie is anywhere up to 4 hours to groom right through, sometimes longer, depends on what she has been up to during the week. Do her about every 5 days. I usually groom one day then bath etc the next as usually I have had it by then, just finding it too much to do all in one day.

I use a grooming spray for the greys, it has mink oil in it and does not soften that area and does not build up in the coat, product by "Mr Groom"
only use that in areas where coat changing, enticing coat to grow a bit, say if you lost a bit of leg coat or belly coat and needed to entice that more then sprayed onto that area as you are grooming.

With normal grooming I also have a spray bottle filled with water and a quinine coat tonic in it, you only add about half a capfull into the water bottle with water and it is misted through the coat as you layer brush, it cleanses the coat all the way through as you brush. Great stuff been using it for years.
Rule of thumb given to me when I picked up my first dog:

"Every inch of hair adds one hour per week of grooming."

A dog with a full 12 inches: 12 hours per week.
(That's an hour and 40 minutes a day)

2 dogs with a full 12 inches, 24 hours per week.
(I won't say that this is three hours per day of brushing)
Sky only has about 6 inches of coat, and Dancer only has 2-3 inches of coat. LOL

Thanks for the tip! I do need to get her coat to grow longer, and fuller, especially on her back legs.

Well then 45 minutes a day would be about right.....

8O 8O Wait till April! 8O 8O
This is the web site for the product stacey www.mrgroom.com

I have used other sprays with mink oil in them and they are too greasy, this one is excellant and have been using this product for a long time. It is made in the states, so you should have no problems getting it. It is in a spray can with SHOW GROOM on the can.
It doesn't appear to be available here in Canada anywhere. The only product I could find that looked comparable was from Bio Groom, but there's has more mink oil I think and is meant for glossing the coat, which I don't want....
No the Biogroom one is tooo greasy. The one I use has vitamin E init, plus other stuff and a suncreen, it does not soften the coat. Helps to promote growth and also great to spray on matts to help tease them apart. All the other products with mink oil in them I have tried including the biogroom one does soften & grease too much.
I really need to learn that technique.... The famous Lindon Hypnotic
technique
Or can I cheat and drug him 8O lol
It's not really any special technique guys...lol.... anyone who shows OES grooms this way (but better than me, especially Carl  )....
Line grooming is something I think all oes owners should learn, whether they show or not. It is the most reliable way to ensure there are no knots, it is all groomed to the skin which allows for proper air circulation and keeps the skin healthy, feels better for the dog, plus... if you have your hands and eyes going over every single part of your dog (as you have to in order to line groom) you are taking preventative health care measures. You would see any blemishes, lumps, bumps, or anything a lot sooner.
It is also more relaxing for the dog, if you aren't blindly snatching a brush through knots and tangles randomly.
*shrug* JMO

How do you get Sky to stay so still, sans wiggling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its that relaxation mode you (and Carl ), achieve.
If its not the famous Lindon Hypnotic technique is
it a special form of belly rubs you use.

What ever you guys have,we're missing it on this end (*wiggle,
wigggle,brush*...........

LOl I think that is just a matter of training, and to some degree the dogs' personality. Sky is a big happy goof, nothing makes her happier than a whole day with me petting her and talking to her. She is an active dog, wiggles and bounces with the best of them. She is also a laid back, accepting dog. She was taught to lay still on the table, so she does. She was taught that when I lift her up to the table, she is not getting off until I tell her she can get off. (I lift her down, never ever let her get down herself)
That was the first thing Diane told me, when I was teaching the dogs to get used to the grooming table. She said YOU lift her up there, and don't EVER let her get down on her own, or she will realize she CAN. LOL

She was right. LOL
I think it's just a matter of getting them used to it and not giving them an option in the matter.
Sky is also just a really good dog :)
Dancer will lie on it too, but she is a bit more wiggly about it after about an hour.
She looks great Stacey! I love her coat colors!

I don't get blisters from holding the brush, but I do get terrible cramps in my hand. :x Taking frequent breaks helps, though, so I usually stop every hour and take a few minutes R&R.

Okay, since I'm being cast as the great evil ogre of grooming I'll jump in  !

Some time ago I posted on how to get your Bobtails to at least "accept" grooming, even if they will never really enjoy it. You can find that post, about #13  , in

http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=2364

It takes time and repeated effort and you simply have to keep at it. Remember you are ALFA and when your Bobtail realizes what you want, that there is something in it for him/her and that their compliance pleases you, then you'll start getting the results (table compliance at least) that Willowsprite and I do.

Also I find it imperative to have a grooming table that is somewhat set aside from where they normally sleep/play/eat etc. :rimshot: You need to differentiate grooming from all ather activities so they clearly know that it is GROOMING time, not play time or anything else. Start to set the tone right from the start in this way :!: Also dog's are creatures of routine so a definite grooming routine will also help a lot.

I actually brush our boys on our kitchen table, something with which they are very familiar. :? However, I always put a blanket on the table and set up the grooming tools on one of the extra chairs BEFORE I put a dog up on the table. Simply getting out the blanket and setting up the tools lets them know it is grooming time and I suddenly loose all my fans!!  Then it is off to coral my "victim". Martin invariably "hides" by the back patio door melding with the floor hoping that I won't see him. I swear one day I'll go to the basement while he is doing this and his feet/legs and belly will be hanging through the ceiling. He can be quite the challenge to get to the table and then onto the table but once up he is an excellent boy. :clappurple: :clappurple: Virgil, on the other hand, threatens to eat me - grrrs as I pick him up! 8O It is his Alpha male personality that he doesn't want anyone to be "over" him but just as with Martin as soon as he is on the table he is as good as gold.

Anyway, just develop a routine that works for you, keep with it and BRIBE your bobtail with that   C-H-E-E-S-E stuff :!:  They will eventually behave for grooming. :rimshot:

Thanks and Cheers

Carl
I envy all of you who can use a table! I don't think they make one in
the size 9' by 9', otherwise I would use one for Zeke too. He simply
cannot stay on a table, no matter what surface it has. The running
joke is that he is part slinky, because he will eventually fall off of
anything, including the bed!

For those of you that clip their dogs shorter...
How many of you get your sheepie all brushed out so you can start clipping only to put it off because they look sooo pretty? I catch myself doing this and it's very annoying!

Quote:

I love it! Oh, what my mom would say. :o I was afraid to say that I brush all of mine out on the bed. My two 2 year old sheepies will snooze the entire time I groom them, my littlest sheepie who's blind is pretty good but a chew helps and our newest addition requires something to chew on or she leaves. All will then comply 100%. They all make a mad dash to the bedroom door to see who gets to go in.

Does anyone have a sheepie with a really dense coat? Panda's is so much thicker than the other girls and I was wondering if there are any tips on caring for a coat like this.
I don't bother brushing it all out if I am going to clip it down. I don't use a blade cover, so it clips to about a 1/4 inch andway. LOL
Yes! :D That's exactly what I plan to do with all 4 come Spring! I used to do that with our sheepie-mix and she loved it. These girls love to play in the kiddie pools and/or dirt so I figure they'll be easier to keep clean and they'll dry a lot faster.

It's so much easier/faster to clip them without a darn comb thingie attachment. When I use them, I can't get it through without snagging so I brush them out completely. The last sheepie I did, I brushed and clipped in sections so I was forced to follow through with the clipping
